Island Orchid Cottage is affordable and has everything you need to have a great vacation without a high cost. You can have peace and quiet in a very comfortable setting with all the amenities of a hotel room. It is nestled in the woods off of a country lane road. The owners/artist's live on the property and enjoy growing their own food like bananas, papayas, passion fruit and more. It is quiet and is a short ride to the beach or store and yet in the middle of a tropical forest.
It is centrally located mid island above the most beautiful beaches that are only 10 minutes away. It is also a 10 to 20 minute ride to either the town of Coral Bay or Cruz Bay for great shopping and restaurants.
Island Orchid Cottage is a new rental and the owners are looking forward to sharing thier property and beloved island with you. They have lived in St John for 30 years and will guide you to the best spots everywhere. Viki Brown offers watercolor classes and shows her work internationally. She also coordinates several other teachers for workshops that you can see on the internet at Zemi Caribbean Workshops or call her for more information.
From Cruz Bay, you will drive along Centerline road to Bordeaux Mountain which is the highest peak. Notice the awesome views of the ocean and other islands. You will see the large bay trees and guava berry trees as soon as you reach Bordeaux. Be aware of donkeys, goats, pigs, cows, lizards, turtles, hawks, hummingbirds, and deer. Travel for 5 minutes until you reach a dirt road on the left, go 200 ft and park on the left. Breathe the fresh forest air. Your cottage will be a short distance away along an easy flowing path through ancient Bay Rum, Guava berry, Tyre Palms and Cedar trees along with hibiscus and wild orchids. (If the large Cedars above are in bloom, you will be walking on a path littered with delicate pink blossoms that have fallen from towering 50 foot giants.) Many island birds make this area their home. You will see parrots, red tail hawks, hummingbirds, banana quits and cukoos.
When you arrive at the cottage, you will see bamboo walls with palm trees, green foliage and orchids. Then you will see a wooden and screened in large 10x20'porch with a small and fully equipped kitchen, dining table, and futon couch accented with paintings of the islands. Then, a deck takes you to the 10'x 12' bedroom and adjoining 8x10' bathroom that has a hot shower overlooking the lush tropical forest canopy. It is living outside and yet having an enclosed wooden cottage with screens and glass, keeping out the elements, and enjoying the forest up close.
It is a very private oasis away from the world and offers a lot of serenity, it is perfect after a long day at the beach or hiking, to come home to this ideal cottage.

The owners of Island Orchid Cottage are fine art painters and have lived on St. John for 30 years. Viki Brown offers classes in painting at the cottage. We love this island and are raising our daughter here. St. John is what we were always looking for. We are happy to be here because of the beauty everywhere you look. There is the crystal clear ocean, that heals every pain you can imagine, turtles abound along with lots of tropical fish, dolphin and whales. You will see adorable donkeys, lizards, hummingbirds, and beautiful flowers. We have owned the Colombo Cafe since 1988 and offer complimentary smoothies for our guest to try. We have sailed to all the islands and this is the best!
Why the Owner Chose Bordeaux Mountain
The property is in a central location close to the best beaches and the shopping in Cruz Bay. It offers a relaxing canopy of tropical trees and flowers in the forest situated on the highest peak. We get the cool easterly breezes in the summer and are shaded by the largest trees on the island. It is a picturesque cottage nestled in the woods that allows you to commune with nature without intrusions. It offers an inexpensive base to be able to visit 10 of the best beaches.
The Unique Benefits of this Island Cottage
It is a quiet atmosphere that is home to a variety of birds and flowers. It is also an artist residence. The homeowner artist, Viki Brown, offers water color painting classes by request. Her art work graces the cottage and is well known internationally. Hiking on the Bordeaux mountain is great along the country roads and seeing the mammoth trees everywhere. The views close to the cottage,on the trails are looking down into Coral Bay and the British Islands. You can look out to sea where the islands Tortola, Peter, Norman (Treasure Island), and Virgin Gorda (home of the baths)are. Island ferry's can take you there for about $30 and 1 hour away from Cruz Bay.
