The one or two bedroom Island Orchid Cottage has everything you need to have a great vacation without a high cost. It is perfect for the family or a couple. The cottage or artist house is nestled in a Tropical forest by the National Park off of a country road that leads to great hikes and views of the Caribbean sea.
The owners, who have been on St. John for 30 years, live nearby and enjoy growing their own food like bananas, papaya, passion fruit and orchids.
This island home has three unique island style pods that are joined by covered decks. This allows privacy for the separate bedrooms; a private bathroom with hot water shower, etc., is in the center. The dining area and kitchen are off to one side.
The cottage is an oasis away from the busy world. It offers a lot of serenity. It is perfect after a long day at the beach or hiking to come home to this ideal spot. Everyone that has stayed here was delighted that they found this comfortable treasure in the middle of the most beautiful island in the Caribbean.
Bordeaux Mountain, where the cottage is located, features pleasant breezes and temperatures usually about 75 degrees year round. The cottage is surrounded with interesting Tropical trees and plants.
The Main bedroom has a Bali island theme. It has three windows, one of which is a large skylight, and a delightful four poster hand carved king size Balinese bed. Orchids are everywhere in the tall curtains and on the bedspread.
Every room is uniquely decorated with Balinese furniture that the owners brought back from one of their excursions, along with unique St John creations. You can snuggle up on the extra comfortable Queen futon couch or chairs and catch a movie after a long day at the beach. A large mahogany desk for business or internet action is in this room along with a lot of closet space. This spacious room has a large TV, DVD, games, books, and an Ipod player/charger.
The bathroom is secluded and allows you to enjoy the wooded area view in its private location.
The dining area and kitchen is surrounded by forest-gardens so when you are cooking you can see the red hibiscus or cedar trees. The dining table is in the center and is a great meeting spot to check out the hummingbirds feasting on orchid nectar. Island paintings are hanging everywhere to capture your imagination.
A short raised deck takes you to another bedroom that has two twin beds (convertible to a king), a mahogany chest, hanging closet, large TV, and DVD. Adjoining this is a bathroom that has a hot rainwater shower overlooking the lush tropical forest canopy.
Island Orchid Cottage is located mid island above the most beautiful beaches that are only 6-8 minutes away. It is also a scenic 12 minute ride to either the town of Coral Bay or Cruz Bay for duty free shopping and a range of inexpensive to gourmet restaurants.
Starting from Cruz Bay, drive along Route 10 to Bordeaux Mountain which is the highest peak at about 1000'. There are awesome views of the ocean and other islands. Beware of donkeys in the road!
Travel for 5 minutes on Bordeaux Mountain Road until you reach a country lane on the left: go 200 ft and park on the left. Breathe the fresh forest and sea air.
Your cottage will be a short distance away along an easy flowing path through ancient Bay Rum and Tyre Palm trees. Many island birds make this area their home. You may see parrots, red tail hawks, hummingbirds, banana quits and cuckoos.
Jay and Viki will be happy to help you out with all of your vacation needs. If you do not hear from them in 24 hours please give them a call. (The INTERNET is occasionally cantankerous.) Call 340 642 2424 or 340 227 9397.

We really enjoyed our seven-week tropical vacation on idyllic St. John. Our cottage was conveniently located on Bordeaux Mountain with easy access to the North Shore Beaches, East End, Coral Bay and Cruz Bay. Island Orchid Cottage was tastefully decorated with soft aqua walls with a calming white netting-draped Balinese poster bed and a quaint Dutch door, allowing the cool breezes to waft through in the evening. In the morning we would awaken to the pleasant chatter of tropical birds in the forest canopy. The weather was heavenly - 80's during the day and cool 70's at night. Jay and Vicki were very accommodating and gracious hosts. They made sure our stay would be a time to be remembered. We have an affinity for islands and St. John is the most beautiful and safest we have encountered. Fred and LouiseRecommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The price for this cottage was reasonable and not bad if your on a tight budget. It is a bit primitive but private. If you desire luxury then I wouldn't recommend this place. If you don't mind nature and camping then you will be happy. For us it was more of a pit stop as we didn't hang out at the cottage. We were too busy doing other things. We enjoyed our stay there and wished we had another week. Jay was very nice and helpful. St. Johns is gorgeous and we loved the off beach snorkeling, lot's too see. We had a great time in St. Johns and didn't spend a fortune.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing.

My wife and two adult children have nothing but praise for our experience at Jay and Viki's rental cottage. We all have a great appreciation for nature, and this place put us smack dab in the middle of it. Nestled in the forest, we often felt like we were staying in a tree house. Our wonderful experience started with meeting Jay at the cottage. He was very friendly, making us feel welcomed. Jay imparted necessary information and made it clear that the cottage was our space to enjoy during our visit and that he was available if anything was needed - which there wasn't because everything was so well taken care of. The cottage itself was a delight. We especially liked that the second bedroom was in a separate structure but connected to the main cottage and bathroom by common decks. Like most people we found ourselves congregating around the kitchen table where we thoroughly enjoyed the sights and sounds of the forest made possible by screened walls. The kitchen lacked for nothing. The cottage was well equipped, very clean, and artistically decorated. Much to my surprise, the tourist information was all current and very helpful. One guidebook in particular provided great insight to the island's history, beaches and hiking trails. The cottage's secluded feeling added to the experience without being an inconvenience. After a short drive to one of the island's main roads we had easy access to great beaches and restaurants. We definitely would stay at the cottage again and certainly recommend it to others who appreciate nature.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This place is extremely secluded. We typically try to stay somewhere on the beach for our Caribbean vacations, but we wanted to give something new a try. This place was a great find, not only is it extremely affordable compared to most St. John property's, it had everything we needed. We spent most of our time at the beach or hiking the beautiful trails of the USVI National park, so we were only looking for a clean place to eat and sleep. This place provided that and much more. A couple nights we were so tired from hiking and snorkeling all day that we actually came back to the cottage and watched a dvd. This is something we never do on vacation, but the cottage was extremely comfortable and allowed us to completely relax. There was plenty of hot water, but you do have to walk outside of the main sleeping area to use the bathroom, which can be a bit of a pain in the middle of the night. If you are not comfortable with the sounds of nature at night, this might not be the place for you. For us, it was very peaceful and just what we were looking for. Quick note: You will absolutely need to rent a car if staying here as you are 15-20 minutes from both Cruz and Coral bays.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family of 4 had a fantastic stay at the cottage. Jay was very nice and accommodating, amenities were fantastic, location was peaceful and secluded. One thing is that you should absolutely plan to rent a car: it is quite a bit off the beaten path, but in a nice central location if you want to visit either side of the island. Not much else to say. The full kitchen was great (if you're on a budget I'd definitely recommend bringing supplies from home to make a few meals because eating out on St. John can get to be pretty expensive.) There's a book by the desk with great tips on things to do/see. WiFi is good and fast, but only accessible in the external bedroom "pod". Definitely recommended, would not hesitate to book with Vicki and Jay again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Wi-fi has been improved 100% and is acessible throughout both bedrooms and the kitchen.

I spent a lovely week in the cottage and found it to be a great get-away for me. As an artist I am always looking for a place to relax and be inspired. The tropical surroundings provided me with lots of ideas for painting and creating. Viki and Jay who are also both artists, provided helpful suggestions as to where to go on island to find even more inspiration for my work. Their cottage was comfortable, clean and cool in the evenings, a wonderful retreat. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers.

The week we spent on the island was one of our best vacations. This little neat cottage was just great the temperature was always just right cool at night and beautiful sunshine during the day. We visit a few restaurants while on the island but enjoyed cooking with the outside grill at our cottage. I would recommend anyone that wants a getaway week to visit the island and stay at this great little cottage up in the mountains you will not regret your choice. Bob & YachieRecommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car.
Owner response: We try our best to make sure our guests have everything they need. Everyone is able to pack a light suitcase because we have all of the essential items for a perfect vacation. We have the beach towels, beach chairs, and coolers for an easy and fun trip to the beach. Then when they get home to the cottage after exploring the beaches, a BBQ grill is ready for an easy meal. Curl up on our large futon couch and watch a movie or check out the hummingbirds buzz around the orchids. If our guests plan on going out for the evening, the restaurants are only about 15 minutes away to Cruz Bay or Coral Bay, we are located in the center of the island.

My girlfriend and I had a great time at the Cottage. While it is a little off the beaten path, it's close enough to everything that the seclusion isn't really an issue so long as you have some wheels you can rely on (4WD prob not necessary, but recommended). Well kept and maintained, the property, while not affording a beach view, is totally beautiful and charming, and the bungelow-esque design tastefully laid out. Most importantly the hosts were totally attentive and helpful without being overbearing. Was a very positive experience and I'm greatly looking forward to going back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We have enjoyed sharing our Cottage and land with some wonderful guests this past year and are looking forward to seeing more of the same. It is great to know that people can see the beauty in our property and feel the peaceful essence that is here. Even though there isn't a beach view, it is a wonderful place to put up your feet after a long day at the beach and lounge in the shade of all the trees and flowers.

About the owner: The owners of Island Orchid Cottage are fine art painters and have lived on St. John for over 30 years. We love this island and are raising our daughter here. St. John is what we were always looking for. We are happy to be here because of the beauty you see everywhere you look. There is the crystal clear ocean, that heals every pain you can imagine. Lots of turtles, colorful fish, squid, whales and dolphin. You will see adorable donkeys, geckos, hummingbirds, and beautiful flowers. We have owned the Colombo Café since 1988 and it has become a popular meeting spot on St. John. We have sailed to all the islands and this is the best!
Why the Owner Chose Bordeaux Mountain:
The property is in a central location close to the best beaches and the shopping in Coral Bay or Cruz Bay. It offers a relaxing canopy of tropical trees and flowers in the forest situated on the highest peak. We get the cool easterly breezes in the summer and are shaded by the largest trees on the island. It is a picturesque cottage nestled in the woods that allows you to commune with nature without intrusions. It offers an inexpensive base to be able to visit 10 of the best beaches and some are a few minutes away.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is a quiet atmosphere that is home to a variety of birds and flowers. It is also an artist residence. The homeowners are artists and display their work at the cottage and at the Colombo Cafe'. Hiking on Bordeaux mountain is a joy, there are mammoth trees everywhere. The views near the cottage, look down into Coral Bay and the British Virgin Islands. You can see the islands Tortola, Peter, Norman (Treasure Island), and Virgin Gorda. An Island ferry can take you there for about $30 in an hour.
