The house is located in the village of Le Bar-sur-loup in the Alpes-Maritimes department, about 10 minutes east of Grasse, 25 minutes north of Cannes, and 40 minutes northwest of Nice. This maison de village is situated in a corner of the village square; parking is available right in front of the door. Bougainvilleas and charming hand-hewn doors adorn the homes in this village full of history dating from the 10th century. A small balcony off the living room overlooks the town and valley, and all of the windows overlook the beautiful valley of the famous Gorges du Loup. This is one of France’s most cherished areas!

The house is on two levels: both bedrooms are downstairs along with one bathroom; upstairs are the living/dining room, the kitchen, and the second bathroom. When you're not mesmerized by the glorious views of the Gorges du Loup, you can cook up a storm in the well-stocked kitchen or borrow one of the many books in our unusually rich library (including a set of the Great Books, in case you'd like to catch up on your Plato on a rainy day). You'll feel like a native in this very un-touristy village....no tour buses pulling up here with masses of people overriding the town. Three delightful restaurants and a couple of shops will ensure you have everything you need if you decide to hunker down and relax...and if you want to discover the surroundings, the choices are overwhelming! There's Nice...Cannes....Antibes....Monaco....St. Paul de Vence...Grasse...Gourdon...Find out why Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Fernand Leger, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy and countless others migrated here and settled in these beautiful hills. It's the light, the color, the marvelous food, the magnificent landscape. Come see for yourself!

We had an absolutely fabulous time in Bar. We loved the town, did lots of visits to Antibes and the beaches, and the hill towns, and even made it to the river twice. It was a highlight of our month in France. Your place was great and just what we needed.

Dear Valerie, We just returned from a great two week stay at your home in Bar sur Loup, France. We have never had such a well-appointed rental property, nor one with such a fabulous view. It was a joy waking up to the incredible sight of the Gorges du Loup right outside our bedroom window. Everything inside made us feel right at home. The town of Bar-sur-Loup is quite picturesque and quiet. It is not full of tourists, but nevertheless has a fine Tourist Information office, which I visited almost daily to discuss the day’s upcoming adventures. Our day always started off with a couple of fresh croissants and an espresso right in the village at the boulangerie. The village is very well situated, as you know, close to many other picturesque villages. We hiked all the way up to our favorite, Gourdon, which is accessible by a well-marked trail, known as the Chemin du Paradis, which is very aptly named. Another trail also took up to Pont du Loup, which runs right along the river Loup and is the home to a large candy manufacturer, Florian Confiserie. We enjoyed the tour and the samples of this traditional manufacturer of all things sweet. Other nearby villages we enjoyed were Tourettes-sur-Loup, a medieval town, and St. Paul de Vence, a walled pedestrian city with some of the best art galleries I have ever seen. Just outside of St. Paul is the renowned Fondation Maeght, housing a large collection of contemporary artwork, including pieces by Miro and Chagall. Other cute towns, all with farmer’s markets, included Valbonne and Colle du Loup. We also enjoyed Grasse, a ten-minute car or bus ride from the village. It has a nice old town, and three major perfume manufacturers, all of whom offer tours. We did spend a couple of days exploring the much more crowded French Riviera, particularly Nice, Cannes and Antibes. I recommend taking the nearby bus to Cannes and Nice to avoid the heavy traffic in those cities. We were always pleased to return to Bar after our jaunts down on the coast. It felt like home: peaceful and authentic. There are a few really excellent restaurants in the village, and the owners were always very happy to talk with us. We particularly liked “L’Ecole des Filles” and “L’Hostellerie du Château.” There’s even a remarkably good take-out pizza place right around the corner from the house. The time went much too quickly, and we look forward to our next visit to this little slice of heaven.

We couldn’t have been happier in your home in Bar-sur-Loup. The four of us fit in there perfectly, and we were mercifully spared arguments over use the bathroom, thanks to the separation of one on each floor. My 21-year-old daughter and my 24-yr old son happily went their separate ways from us in the village, trying out their high school/college French, thrilled when they came back with the requisite grocery list. My husband and I spent untold hours hanging out the windows, shooting zillions of pictures (see the enclosed, of which you have doubles, I’m sure!), as well as relaxing, reading books and cooking. The four of us went to every village and town you recommended and filled the already-filled guest book with stories of our adventures. We loved the area and found the French accommodating, friendly, even smiling, and wondered where all those rude waiters we’ve always heard about were hanging out—we certainly never saw or were served by one. On the contrary, the French people couldn’t have been nicer and more pleasant and willing to put up with our fractured French language skills, although my daughter and son did the lion’s share of the ordering to spare their parents further humiliation. We shall certainly return. We’re still regaling our neighbors with our stories and photos and have told everyone about our home away from home—expect more visitors from Pittsburgh! Thank you again for all your help, instructions, and good cheer about everything. It was a wonderful experience, for my children as young adults and for us as a family.

What happy memories we have from our stay at your lovely townhouse! The late October visit afforded excellent weather, and the house was so comfortable and so convenient to exploring the surrounding area. The mountains and gorge nearby provided dramatically beautiful scenery to view through a camera lens or to hike through. We were charmed by Le-Bar-Sur-Loup itself. It was easy to fool ourselves into believing that we had assimilated into the town as we shopped for our daily baguette, bought a paper, or picked out some fresh fruit at the weekly market in the square. Everyone was so nice, especially the sweet girl at the tourism center. We found, to our surprise and relief, that our lack of French was no problem. Everyone spoke English and made us feel welcome. The woman at the tourist center appreciated my attempt to speak French, and we had such fun discussing which restaurants to try, and what towns to explore. The weather was gorgeous, and we loved exploring the village with its winding streets, narrow alleyways and authentic medieval dwellings. The old doors fascinated me, as did the church windows and public fountains. Your home made us feel like we were staying with family in a foreign country. Thank you for making it so pleasant for us.
