Location: Rusticoville, Anne's Land, Prince Edward Island, Canada (15 Minutes to Charlottetown Airport) View Map
Accommodations: Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths (Sleeps 10-12)
Carnoustie Cottage is on a quiet oceanfront point on Rustico Bay, looking out over the sand dunes of Prince Edward Island National Park, Rustico Bay, and the ocean. The view is spectacular in all directions.
Easy access to the lovely red clay low bank to the natural beach which is shallow and ideal for small kids to play and splash, or for walks. As the bay is shallow, the only boats you will see are the mussel fishermen, kayakers, windsurfers and kite-surfers. A short walk down the beach is an estuary filled with herons, eagles and other abundant wildlife. If you get up early enough you will be rewarded with an incredible sunrise and a glimpse of the bald eagles who perch on the bank for early morning fishing. Sitting on the wrap around porch looking at the views in all directions is the highlight of the property.
A five minute bike ride or kayak, (or two minutes by car) down our road, and a short walk through the dunes and seagrass leads you to one of Prince Edward Island's best kept secrets - an amazing 'secret' beach that only the locals know about. It has spectacular pinky white sand and fantastic views - and dogs are welcome too. We have a big white lab who is in 7th heaven on the beach, playing in the waves with the kids. The beach is great for body surfing on windy days, but generally the waves aren't too big. There are natural tidal pools that form on the beach as the tide goes out, creating warm pools for smaller kids to play in and catch crabs.
The cottage has two kayaks - a double and a single, as well as four bikes. The biking is fabulous, you can go for miles on uncrowded paved roads and explore. There are 11 golf courses within a half hour drive, including Crowbush which is ranked #2 public course in Canada. The nearest course is at Rustico Resort, a five minute drive and perfect for families - about $25 for all the holes you can play after 2pm. They even have free kids clinics one or two nights a week. They also have grass tennis courts available for a small hourly fee. The local store just down the road has basic groceries, a good butcher, and an ice cream parlour. The village of North Rustico, about 10 minutes away, has grocery stores, a liquor store, a fantastic bakery, and fresh seafood stalls right on the docks of North Rustico Harbour. This is a true fisherman's harbour with lobster, oysters, mussels, and other delicious fresh seafood brought in daily. Deep Sea fishing charters leave twice a day, and are very reasonable. I take my son out every summer with 'Bob's fishing', and we regularly catch about 10 mackerel and cod. For big fish enthusiasts, you might get lucky enough to watch a thousand pound tuna being brought in.
For Anne of Green Gable buffs Cavendish tourist area is a 15 minute drive away. Here you will also find several amusement and water parks with rides, restaurants and stores. For beach lovers the spectacular white sand beaches and dunes of PEI National Parks in both Cavendish and Brackley Beach are also only 10-15 minutes away. You can also kayak across the bay to Brackely Beach, which we think is the nicest National Park beach on the island. We are 15 minutes from the Charlottetown airport - so close to town yet you are totally away from it all. Many summer residents commute weekly to their jobs in Toronto, Montreal, Boston etc. It takes about 25 minutes to get to downtown Charlottetown, where you will find great restaurants, live theatre, movie theatres, and shopping.
Several of the best restaurants on the Island are less than a 10 minute drive. Carr's Oysters in Stanley ridge has a great patio and live music, and is a local favorite hangout on the Island. Kids (and adults!) love jumping off the bridge across from Carr's.
Carnoustie is without a doubt one of the nicest cottages on the island. It is a custom built, cedar shingle sided, Nantucket style cottage, built with superior craftsmanship. There is ample space for more than one family, if you are looking to share with friends or relatives. The basement bedroom and recreation area is the 'kids retreat' ( sleeps four) - it also opens into our huge double garage which doubles as the sports centre on rainy days and evenings. Any one who has loud, active kids will be thanking me profusely for having this space! There is a ping pong table and my son has plans to add hockey nets and a basket ball hoop. In fact he has announced that he loves the garage so much he wants to sleep out there, (boys!) so by next year there might actually be a bed out there too!
The main floor has a large living central room with plans for a propane fireplace ( it should be in place by 2010) , a small screened-in porch perfect for stealing a quiet moment or reading, (or sleeping if its warm) a dining area surrounded by windows looking out on the Bay, and a TV room with sofa and flat screen TV, off the kitchen. This could also serve as a sleeping area if you need to fit in an extra person. No matter how many people might be there, you can always find a quiet place to relax, read or nap. The wrap around porch also ensures that no matter what time of day, you can choose your view. The main floor bedroom has French doors that open to the porch, with a lovely view over towards the estuary.
The two bedrooms upstairs both have vaulted ceilings and fantastic views. The master Bedroom looks out to the ocean, and when the wind picks up you can hear the waves crashing over the sandbar. There is a large second floor walk out deck being planned off the master bedroom, which should be finished for the 2010 season. Please check the site this winter for photos - this new upper deck will be exceptional!
This cottage is designed and furnished for people who expect and appreciate quality. This really is the greatest place to relax and revitalize, whether as a family vacation or looking for the ultimate golf and lobster escape. Carnoustie Cottage offers a truly unforgettable 'PEI Experience".

Spectacular Oceanfront Prince Edward Island Cottage
Year Purchased: 2009
Why the Owner Chose Rusticoville
Prince Edward Island is one of the most incredible Islands in the world - it is an undiscovered gem. Conde Naste has voted Prince Edward Island as one of the top 20 Islands in the world. I came for a conference one year, and fell in love with the Island. It is the perfect place to have a cottage - affordable, accessible, and being from Ontario, it gives us a unique ocean experience that we just can't get at home. We recently sold our original cottage, and bought Carnoustie Cottage. It is just around the corner from our old place, and we had always admired it from across the bay. It is a true ocean cottage, has lots of space, amazing views in all directions, and we are in love with it. To stay at Carnoustie is to have a true Maritime 'experience". All of Prince Edward Island is gorgeous, but we love the North Shore. It is wilder, more rugged, less populated. There are more golf courses on the North Shore, and we love all the fishing villages, which you don't get on the South shore as its so shallow due to the tides. Our property is ideally located since its in the centre of the Island. Its very convenient for day trips in any direction. We are only about 40 minutes to the east coast, where you can go to Singing Sands beach and Basinhead, near Soirie.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
Privacy, wildlife, incredible views, and a wonderful sense of being. A cottage should provide not just a place to stay, but an authentic experience. Carnoustie provides all that and more. This is a cottage is for people who are not prepared to settle for less than 'exceptional' when it comes to their vacations. Whether as a family holiday, or golfing with friends, it is a unique, upscale, unrivaled rental property. It might cost more than many of the other rental properties on the island, but without a doubt, it is worth it.
Owner's Map of Rusticoville
We live in Toronto, and have 3 kids, aged 15,13 and 7, who all love the island, and love it for different reasons. Connor (13) is an avid golfer and loves the body surfing, Mattie (7) just wants to play on the beach for hours, go for bike rides, swim and mini putt, and Rebecca (15) just wants to chill, bake in the sun, and have no agenda. Graeme bikes about 200K a week, eats about 20 pounds of lobster a week, and loves the serenity of being on the ocean. I love to go for long runs, walks or kayak. I enjoy cooking up a seafood storm every day, and plan to learn to kite-surf next year. In fact I think our whole family is taking on that challenge! I love photography and Prince Edward Island has got to be one of the best places in the world to photograph - the colors and light are so intense. Our dog Rossi LOVES it here too - he has learned the hard way not to chase the herons when they are fishing, and his white coat usually ends up red. He loves the beach, and spends hours leaping through the waves with the kids, or running up and down the beach as fast as he can. He is the reason we are a pet friendly rental - every family dog should be able to enjoy this paradise too :) Mostly we all just enjoy escaping our every day frantic lives, and breathing the sea air. This place takes the wrinkles out of your soul.
