Rusticoville cottage description
Carnoustie Cottage is on a quiet oceanfront point at the north western edge of Rustico Bay, looking out over the sand dunes of Prince Edward Island National Park, Rustico Bay, and the ocean. The view is spectacular in all directions.
There is easy access down the red clay low cliff to the natural beach which is shallow and ideal for small kids to play and splash, or for walks. As the bay is shallow, the only boats you will see are the mussel fishermen, kayakers, windsurfers and kite-surfers. A short walk down the beach is an estuary filled with herons, eagles and other abundant wildlife. If you get up early enough you will be rewarded with an incredible sunrise and a glimpse of the bald eagles who perch on the bank for early morning fishing. Sitting on the wrap around porch looking at the views in all directions is the highlight of the property.
A five minute bike ride or kayak, (or two minutes by car) down our road, and a short walk through the dunes and sea grass leads you to one of Prince Edward Island's best kept secrets - an amazing 'secret' beach that only the locals know about. It has spectacular pinky white sand and fantastic views - and dogs are welcome too. We have a big white lab who is in 7th heaven on the beach, playing in the waves with the kids. The beach is great for body surfing on windy days, but generally the waves aren't too big. There are natural tidal pools that form on the beach as the tide goes out, creating warm pools for smaller kids to play in and catch crabs.
The cottage has three kayaks - a double sea-kayak and 2 ride-on singles good for any age, as well as four bikes. The biking is fabulous, you can go for miles on uncrowded paved roads and explore. There are 11 golf courses within a 45 min drive, including Crowbush which is ranked #2 public course in Canada. The nearest course is at Rustico Resort, a five minute drive and perfect for families - about $30 for all the holes you can play after 2pm. They even have free kids clinics one or two nights a week. They have grass tennis courts available for a small hourly fee. The local store just down the road has basic groceries, a good butcher, and an ice cream parlour. The village of North Rustico, about 10 minutes away, has grocery stores, a liquor store, a fantastic bakery, and fresh seafood market right on the docks of North Rustico Harbour. This is a true fisherman's harbour with lobster, oysters, mussels, and other delicious fresh seafood brought in daily. Deep Sea fishing charters leave twice a day, and are very reasonable. I take my son out every summer with 'Bob's fishing', and we regularly catch about 10 mackerel and cod. For big fish enthusiasts, you might get lucky enough to watch a thousand pound tuna being brought in.
For Anne of Green Gables lovers Cavendish tourist area is a 15 minute drive away. Here you will also find several amusement and water parks with rides, restaurants and stores. For beach lovers the spectacular white sand beaches and dunes of PEI National Parks in both Cavendish and Brackley Beach are only about 20 minutes away. You can also kayak across the bay to Brackley Beach, which we think is the nicest National Park beach on the island. We are 20 minutes from the Charlottetown airport - so close to town yet you are completely away from it all. Many summer residents commute weekly to their jobs in Toronto, Montreal, Boston etc. It takes about 25 minutes to get to downtown Charlottetown, where you will find great restaurants, live theatre, movie theatres, and shopping.
Several of the best restaurants on the Island are less than a 20 minute drive. Carr's Oysters in Stanley Bridge has a great patio and live music, and is a local favorite hangout on the Island. Kids (and adults!) love jumping off the bridge across from Carr's.
Carnoustie is without a doubt one of the nicest cottages on the island. It is a custom built, cedar shingle, Nantucket style cottage, built with superior craftsmanship. There is ample space for more than one family, if you are looking to share with friends or relatives. The basement bedroom and recreation area is the 'kids retreat' ( sleeps four) - it also opens into our huge double garage which doubles as the sports centre on rainy days and evenings. Any one who has loud, active kids will be thanking me profusely for having this space! There is a ping pong table and my son has plans to add hockey nets and a basket ball hoop. In fact he has announced that he loves the garage so much he wants to sleep out there..fine with me!
The main floor has a large central living room with a huge bank of glass doors looking out to the sea. There is a screened-in porch perfect for stealing a quiet moment or morning coffee. The porch which opens to the dining area which is surrounded by windows looking out on the Bay. There is a den with sofa and flat screen TV, off the kitchen. This could also serve as a sleeping area if you need to fit in an extra person. No matter how many people might be there, you can always find a quiet place to relax, read or nap. The wrap around porch also ensures that no matter what time of day, you can choose your view. The main floor bedroom has French doors that open to the porch, with a lovely view over towards the estuary.
The two bedrooms upstairs both have vaulted ceilings and fantastic views. The master Bedroom looks out to the ocean, and when the wind picks up you can hear the waves crashing over the sandbar.
This cottage is designed and furnished for people who expect and appreciate quality. Carnoustie is a place to relax and revitalize, whether as a family vacation, or for the ultimate golf and lobster escape. Carnoustie Cottage offers a truly unforgettable 'PEI Experience'.

My family (including our standard poodle, Harry) stayed at Carnoustie in late June of this year. What a beautiful, spacious home! So quiet, so peaceful, it was a perfect family vacation. The "secret beach" is a bike ride away, and at low tide, you can go out fairly far in warm water (warmer than Ocean City MD!), which makes it perfect if you have little ones. We don't, but our "big kids" (21 and 19) still loved the beach, and so did we, and our dog Harry, who looked forward to running on the sand and in the water every day! My favorite part of vacation was sitting on the porch in the morning with a cup of coffee watching the osprey dive bomb for fish, and with a glass of wine in the evening doing the same. Absolutely amazing. The constant breeze made for wonderful sleeping weather, and with all the doors and windows, each room has a breathtaking view. The downstairs bedroom is perfect if you have teens, because there is a TV, bath, and bedroom with a ping pong table. It's away from the main living area - my hubby used it to watch TV (perfect "man cave" LOL) The main floor bathroom is amazing. :-) The local store (Gallant's) at the corner has the.best.beef.ever. They will custom cut for you and the strip steak is a MUST. No industrialized farms on PEI - these cows are grass fed, grazing and happy :). Taste the local cheese too - and the seafood - all locally caught halibut, clams, mussels, mackeral, scallops, cod, lobster. The Blue Mussel Cafe is a small, friendly place with great seafood, and is right by the harbor in Rusticoville. The Rustico Resort has a Golf Course (5 minutes away) with reasonable greens fees and a friendly staff. Olde Town Bakery has great tarts and meat pies. We went clam digging with Ron Perry,("Digging for Dinner") and it was a fun experience. We met him in Summerside, he took us to dig clams, then steamed them up in an old family recipe and we had dinner in an old 1940's caboose. You bring the wine, cheese, bread, and dig your clams! We even brought Harry! Another fun thing to do for those that are crafty is to go sea glass hunting with Teri of Fire and Ice Creations. You get to make a necklace out of the glass you find in her studio near Souris. about an hour from the cottage. We really didn't eat out much, since the seafood and local beef are SO good :) Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wonderful vacation! I would recommend this place to anyone - it can easily support two families and pets :)

Fantastic house and vacation
Fantastic house and vacation
My husband, myself, our 2 daughters and their husbands and children (3 under 5 years) stayed here in August. The house was extremely comfortable for all 3 families - lots of room for everyone. The views from the house are spectacular. The house has everything to make the vacation extremely comfortable. Loved the "private" beach. My grandson thought it was our own secret. Everything you could possibly want in a relaxing vacation is within easy drive of the house. The seafood is amazing. My husband and I loved watching the eagles come in daily to dine. Spectacular house and holiday!

Just perfectly lovely
Just perfectly lovely
I have been to PEI on vacation, with and without my children, three times in the last 8 years, and this is by far the most beautiful place I've stayed at. The views are breathtaking, from every window (including the bathroom!). The furnishings are warm and natural and blend right into the PEI vibe. This cottage is perfectly situated on the island for its guest to enjoy everything the island has to offer - peace and tranquility, unbelievable beaches, awesome drives along the ocean's edge, great food, fascinating local talent and art, a wide variety of sport and leisure activity - its all within minutes and hours. Really, the beaches and the national part near by and ... amazing. I feel like a new person when I spend time on the island, and when I stayed at this cottage, I felt really relaxed, well rested, well fed and well taken care of. I recommend it to anyone who is coming to PEI with family, friends, alone or with a special someone. It really is as beautiful in real life as it is in these pictures, if not even more so. Ship to Shore has amazing fish and chips, Raspberry Point has great fresh mussels right out of the water, North Rustico Harbour is adorable, and the Dunes has great art and food. There is even a drive-in about 7 km away! Come, stay and enjoy!

About the owner: I live in Toronto, and have 2 kids, aged 16 and 14, who both love the island, and love it for different reasons. Connor (14) is an avid golfer and loves body surfing on our 'special beach', and Rebecca (16) mostly just wants to chill, lie in the sun, and have no agenda. I love the serenity of being on the ocean. I go for long runs, walks or kayak over to the National Park to walk and explore. I enjoy cooking up a seafood storm every day, and plan to learn to kite-surf next year. In fact I think our whole family is taking on that challenge! I love photography and Prince Edward Island has got to be one of the best places in the world to photograph - the colors and light are so intense. Our dog Rossi LOVES it here too - he has learned the hard way not to chase the herons when they are fishing, and his white coat usually ends up orange from the sand. He loves the beach, and spends hours leaping through the waves with the kids, or running up and down the beach as fast as he can. He is the reason we are a pet friendly rental - every family dog should be able to enjoy this paradise too :) Mostly we all just enjoy escaping our every day frantic lives, and breathing the sea air. This place takes the wrinkles out of your soul.
Why the Owner Chose Rusticoville:
Prince Edward Island is one of the most incredible Islands in the world - it is an undiscovered gem. Conde Naste has voted Prince Edward Island as one of the top 20 Islands in the world. I came for a conference one year, and fell in love with the Island. It is the perfect place to have a cottage - affordable, accessible, and being from Ontario, it gives us a unique ocean experience that we just can't get at home. We recently sold our original cottage, and bought Carnoustie Cottage. It is just around the corner from our old place, and we had always admired it from across the bay. It is a true ocean cottage, has lots of space, amazing views in all directions, and we are in love with it. To stay at Carnoustie is to have a true Maritime 'experience'. All of Prince Edward Island is gorgeous, but we love the North Shore. It is wilder, more rugged, less populated. There are more golf courses on the North Shore, and we love all the fishing villages, which you don't get on the South shore as its so shallow due to the tides. Our property is ideally located since its in the centre of the Island. Its very convenient for day trips in any direction. We are only about 40 minutes to the east coast, where you can go to Singing Sands beach and Basinhead, near Soirie.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Privacy, wildlife, incredible views, and a wonderful sense of being. A cottage should provide not just a place to stay, but an authentic experience. Carnoustie provides all that and more. This is a cottage is for people who are not prepared to settle for less than 'exceptional' when it comes to their vacations. Whether as a family holiday, or golfing with friends, it is a unique, upscale, unrivaled rental property. It might cost more than many of the other rental properties on the island, but without a doubt, it is worth it.
