Thank you for your interest in our home :-) Whether you're looking for a group gathering, small party get away, family fun, outdoor recreation or peace and quiet, Elk Creek Ranch is the perfect vacation home away from home!

Our family home is located off of highway 149, up our mile long dirt road. The remote location is ideal for privacy, peace and quiet. Surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest and BLM land, the ranch is quiet, comfortable, private and beautiful. Nestled in the San Juan Mountains at 8800 feet, Elk Creek Ranch is just nine miles north of historic Lake City, Colorado.

This centennial ranch, homesteaded by my great-grandfather John N. Thompson in 1878, is full of history. The original cabin he built and original barn made with only wooden pegs, still stand. The vacation home was built in 1970, remodeled and improved in 1986, 1993, 2002 and 2006. The new boiler system and water well ensure enough hot water for all guests to shower back to back. The fully equipped home with new beds, a very large dining table, antique piano, gas grill, tv, music players and decks with breath taking views, will all ensure the perfect visit. Enjoyable for both tranquility seekers and the wilderness explorers.

The many friendly horses (sorry not available for riding) give this working ranch an extra appeal. The nearby irrigation ditch provides fun for dogs and kids. The Lake Fork River, with public fishing access, only 10 min. away, makes for the fisherman's dream. Not to mention Lake San Crystobol only about 35 min. away and Blue Mesa Res. 45 min away, give the options for boating, fishing or just relaxing on the shore. The forest service access road Big Blue Creek is one mile away from the entrance to the ranch for ATV and quad riding.

The two story home is spacious enough for a large family gathering and affordable enough for the romantic couples get-away. Available as the whole house or as individual levels, the rental prices vary on number of guest and time year. Two wood stoves, two fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms provide extra family comfort. The ranch is accessible year round and rates vary so please call and ask for the price that works for you.

Visit Elk Creek Ranch for the perfect mountain vacation. ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL!
I look forward to hearing from you, Thank you ;-) Nicole Thompson Goring

Our whole family, parents, kids and grandkids stayed the week at the lodge. Beautiful scenery, lots of room, close to town, but far enough away to enjoy the outdoors! We loved our time at the lodge, able to fix meals to feed our crew and enjoy the outdoors with the kiddos not worried about being too loud and hyper. Great for all ages, we had age 3 to 60+! Plenty of hot water to go around! :) The pictures do not do it justice- this place was awesome. Highly recommended! Already planning our next trip! :)

My wife and I stayed at the ranch the week before Christmas of 2011 with 3 other couples and 4 boys ages 4 to 9. The ranch is a special place to unwind and enjoy colorado at its best. This is our second visit and we have seen big mule deer bucks and lots of cow elk on the property. The boys enjoyed sliding down the road and the hills leading to the ranch house. The pictures on VRBO do not do justice to this Special Place.

We were able to stay at the Elk Creek Ranch for our family vacation this year which included 6 adults, a 2 year old and 10 month old. Nicole has the house very child friendly - including high chair, baby gates on the stairs and toys! The front porch is even made child safe. The house had ample room with all the kitchen amenities you need. We enjoyed fishing and hiking in the surrounding area and rides on our 4-wheelers over Engineer Pass and Alpine Loop - absolutely incredible scenery! We loved sitting on the deck for meals and enjoyed the star filled skies in the evenings. We even saw a bear scoot across the meadow one afternoon. If you're looking for a quiet relaxing vacation nestled in beautiful mountains - I would absolutely recommend Elk Creek Ranch. Nicole's family has a beautiful ranch with a lot of history.

There were 8 adults in our party and had ample room. The views are spectacular! Took my hummingbird feeders with us and was overjoyed with the number of birds that found them. I would recommend this place to anyone. We plan to stay again if our vacation dates are available.

I can not say enough about this magical place. The only negative is that I can not visit more often because of the distance. There is not enough room on this review to explain how amazing this place is. Trust me when I say THE PHOTOS DO NOT DO IT JUSTICE! The owner is wonderful to work with and is very serious about you having the experience you desire. She is so accomidating and always available to answer any questions and make sure you trip goes off without a hitch. Everything was exactly as she decribed and then some. The views are stunning, the hiking is infinite and right out of your front door. Wildlife is seen daily. There is a cute little stream that runs through the property that we cool our watermelons in. There is a beautiful river that is just a hike across the meadow. And there is this amazing barn! Ask the owner about all of the history on the barn and the whole ranch. It is a fasinating story. And the ranch is still owned by the original family that settled there. The town of Lake City is a short drive away, such a quaint little town with restaurants and shopping and tons of history. There is an amazing lake there-beautiful! And you can drive past the lake for a drive over the pass into Ouray for the day. There are all the shops to rent any fishing poles or equipment to enjoy the area sites. As I mentioned. Out of all of my travels, cruises, over seas...this is the most serene, beautiful, relaxing, worth every penny experience. What a little hidden away treasure Elk Creek Ranch is. Please pass along my email to anyone that would like a personal reference.

I hate to write such praise for fear that I might have trouble getting a booking in the future. We have been to this spot many times now, and intend to keep coming back. The view from the deck is stunning, and the privacy is amazing. We use the ranch as home base for horseback riding in the mountains all around the area, with something like 5 wilderness areas in easy driving distance. There is world-class fly fishing at the end of the driveway on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, 14'ers all over the place, wildlife (like moose), and beautiful stars. The house is basic but very comfortable. We play all day, make amazing meals in the kitchen at night, and enjoy the stunning setting. It is a great spot for family reunions, with plenty to do for everyone. Nichole has always been helpful and we have never had a bad experience in something like 6 previous visits.

About the owner: The ranch has been in my family since 1878. My father died when i was a kid so to keep the home to keep it in the family I do a vacation rental. I like that guests treat it with respect and enjoy it as much as I do. It also allows me to go there a lot with my kids and family. I live in Durango,CO and work as a hair designer and dance teacher (can't make a living in remote Lake City). It feels great to have so many return guests who love the ranch as much as I do. Hope you visit soon to experience the magic of the mountains.
