Amazing!

Guest: Skinns (East Bay, CA)
Date of Stay: 05/12/12 Review Submitted: 05/25/12

We recently returned from 5 nights at this great cottage. We are still in awe of the property. Jo and Wayne have literally thought of everything you could possibly need to have a great vacation...coolers, snorkling equipment, books, BBQ and the bed is second to none! Holy cow that bed was comfortable. The property is immaculate and you could easily spend your days lounging around the pool or checking out the acres of trees, flowers, etc. Jo and Wayne are right next door if you need anything but also give you privacy if you choose. Unfortunately, the weather did not allow us to use the pool but the pool deck/area looked like a little slice of heaven, wet bar, ping pong, lounge chairs, telescope, etc. The property is extremely private and secluded...follow their advice and be sure to buy your food, drinks, etc. before arriving. The closest store is about 25 minutes away. Mahalo Jo & Wayne!!

What can be said about this beautiful place that has not already been said by the hundreds that have come before us? I'll try to think of something... How often do you go somewhere with high expectations and it actually turns out better than you've envisioned (especially when you, like us, book many months in advance and spend an inordinate amount of time daydreaming about your upcoming vacation)? This is one of those rare places. It truly is like having a little resort all to yourself. Looking for crowded beaches, nightlife, tourist traps? Look elsewhere. Want an isolated oasis to wash away the thoughts of your busy life back on the mainland? Well here it is. Be prepared to put some miles on the rental car, even the closest little store is 11 miles away. Volcano national park is a good hour drive and an absolute must see. The cottage makes a great location for exploring the islands hidden treasures (and one of those is a beach just a few miles away (with a 20 minute trail walk) that you may just have all to yourself (we did!). Jo and Wayne and Cutie pie and of course the chickens are the best hosts you will likely ever meet. I do have one negative comment though...we don't like having to leave!

Wonderful Hosts & Amazing Property!

Date of Stay: 04/17/12 Review Submitted: 04/27/12

My husband and I chose this location to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary and it was perfect! Jo and Wayne are hosts that everyone dreams of...they are extremely friendly and will interact with you or not based on what you prefer (we chose the former because we found them (and Sweetie Pie) to be quite entertaining!). They were very willing to assist us with the best snorkeling and activity information. Everything you need is literally on the property at your disposal; just show up with your luggage, some groceries and a strong taste for the most delicious Kona coffee we have ever had in our lives! The property is exactly as described and pristinely clean; everything was to our utmost satifaction and we have already booked to go back next year! Mahalo and see you soon!

Perfect "home base" on the Big Island

Guest: Jenny and Storm (United States)
Date of Stay: 04/06/12 Review Submitted: 04/14/12

We stayed at the Whiteside's property for 5 nights and loved every minute of it! The house was the perfect size for the two of us but could easily accommodate more than just two. It was nice to have the option of making our own meals with a full kitchen and outdoor grill. We were also able to do meals on the run since the Whitesides thought of every detail and provided various sizes of coolers for keeping sandwiches and drinks cool. We also appreciated the swimming noodles and beach towels - we snorkeled at a different location every day! The king size TempurPedic mattress was comfy after a days adventure and we loved sleeping with the windows open, enjoying the cool night breezes and the peaceful calls of the Coqui frogs. We didn't spend much time hanging out, but when we did the huge TV with DirectTV was very nice. We would definitely recommend this property and would stay there again if we were to return.

Very private, high view, and secluded

Date of Stay: 03/02/12 Review Submitted: 03/10/12

Wayne and Jo Whiteside are very gracious, friendly hosts. They are in their adjacent house for anything you need, but give you total privacy. The property is like an island to itself. My wife especially liked seeing the girls "Jo's chicken's" come out of their house in the morning. The house is in excellent condition, and extremely clean. The bed is very comfortable, and the kitchen is fully-equipped. Wayne and Jo obviously take a lot of pride in their property, as demonstrated by how well they maintain the grounds and the buildings. The Whiteside's were thoughful enough to provide at least 50 brochures of things to do in the area, which was very helpful. They're also more than willing to point you to beaches. They also provide snorkeling and boogey-boarding equipment. Also, they had coolers for us to take to the beach, and fold-up beach chairs. Jo and Wayne really did anticipate all our vacation needs. This property is a little more than an hour from Volcanoes Natl Park, which made it easy for us to make two trips there, as there was too much to do in one day. We only wish there were more restaurants close-by. A rental-car is definitely a necessity if you're staying at this property. It is in the country, not the city.

This has been our fourth visit to this wonderful place and people... All descriptions on the web page are accurate... all the photos reflect exactly as it is...it is not only well maintained but also spotlesly clean. Personally I love the outdoor shower, one can shower in the sunshine, get clean and get a bit of a suntan on your whole bod! I am a shy person.....the swimming pool is a delight also. The panaramic view of the ocean whilst swimming up and down the pool is something to behold. As you can see by how many times we have visited we think this is the only place to stay on the Big Island of Hawaii. Jo and Wayne have to be the very best of hosts... they put themselves out to be of assistance if needed in both information for the tourist along with just plain old friendly. Those of you reading this might be under the impression that we have always so enjoyed our time at the cottage - its our home away from home -but also that we just love these two people. Your correct. Thank you Wayne and Jo for including us in your life and family. We highly recommend to our family, friends or those of you looking for a hideaway - you have found it here. How lucky Gerry and I are to have found you and your wonderful property all those years ago, Just think what we would have missed.

For a quiet, private cottage, this is the best. Have never found anything so clean and well maintained. Everything you need to enjoy your Hawaii experience is here, beach mats, snorkel equip, ice chests, etc. We loved the atmosphere and the owners were lovely hosts. The listing description was right on, no surprises.... and the photos accurately represented the rental's appearance and amenities. The owner taught us a lot about the area and answered all of our questions about things to see and area attractions We would definitely highly recommend this rental to friends and relatives.

Mahalo to Jo and Wayne for providing a clean, cozy and peaceful bungalow for a two week retreat on the Big Island! 110% customer satisfaction. Loved the location where you can see the stars at night, great sunsets, appreciated the outdoor gas grill for cooking fresh fish, coolers provided for day trips, everything you'd want for your local adventures and excursions. The Volcano is just an hour away, Hilo is two hour drive, local beaches are a 10-30 minute drive. You do need a rental car! We will be back again and again and again until we move there. Jo and Wayne were one of the highlights for us too! Fun, good hearted and an inspiration!

Quite Lovely Retreat

Guest: Tracy (Santa Cruz, Ca)
Date of Stay: 12/15/11 Review Submitted: 12/19/11

My husband and I came here to celebrate our 20th anniversary of meeting each other on this island! We really needed the quiet, privacy, and restfulness that we were provided at this well-stocked cottage. They provide everything needed, coolers, snorkeling gear etc. We asked for privacy and Wayne and Jo were nowhere to be seen until we actively sought them out to ask advise on various subjects. They were wonderful, giving us a wealth of information about the edible plants and fruit on their 5 acres and we bought a delicious pound of 100% Kona coffee that Jo picked and processed herself. We enjoyed the ping pong table, pool table, decks, and found some great music from the Direct TV set up. We felt like we had our own retreat place! The views were not as good only because the volcano was creating some haze and smoke that blocked the clarity. Had it been clear, the views would have been awesome. We had a couple of great chicken encounters with their friendly chickens on the land. Thank you for a wonderful 20th! Warmly Always, David and Tracy Wikander, December 2011, Santa Cruz, CA

Paradise Revisited

Date of Stay: 11/30/11 Review Submitted: 12/13/11

This was our second trip to Wayne and Jo's fabulous piece of paradise and definitely won't be our last. They make it very hard to leave. Since our first visit in 2010, Wayne and Jo have added a pool, solar sauna and a screened sun porch to go with all the other wonderful amenities. The location of the cottage makes it easy to explore the island, whether you are going to Kona, Hawi, The Volcano or Hilo. We traveled 1800 miles around the island during our two week visit and still managed to have time to relax by the pool and enjoy the cottage. We enjoyed buying fresh fruits and vegetables from the farmers markets and local venders all over the island. We ate Lau Lau, Huli Huli Chicken, BBQ ribs and other true Hawaiian foods from local venders. We loved our conversations with the locals. They were full of imformation and very helpful, as were Wayne and Jo. We were able to experience the Christmas season, Hawaiian style. Something we will never forget. We enjoyed purchasing all our Christmas gifts from the islands local artists. This was a fun and very memorable vacation and we are looking forward to returning the same time next year. Thank you Wayne and Jo for making us feel so comfortable and truely welcome. We can't wait to see you again next year. Mahalo!

We had a fantastic time, and would gladly come here again. Thanks to Wayne and Jo for a wonderful time... it was really great to get to know you!

This was a wonderful stay. If you want relaxation and comfort, you need to stay at this home. Wayne and Jo,are here, but not here. The property is beautiful. The property has tons of fresh fruit and coffee plants. The Kona coffee they process from scrach is spectacular. You can buy it here for a very reasonable price. We come to this Island every year, and never realized the wonderful snorkeling that was so close to their home. Approximately 20 minutes away at Honaunau Bay, we had a wonderful time snorkeling and enjoying the dolfins flipping around. Stay here and enjoy the time of a life time.

Private, peaceful guest house on a coffee plantation and pretty sunset

We celebrated our 5th anniversary on the big island. First time big island visitors we wanted to cover the entire island or as much as we could. We stayed at three sides of the island and Wayne and Jo's guest house was the last stop. It was perfect. Very clean, comfortable King bed, HD huge tv for late night screened in porch with a view of the ocean down below and sunset! They have a completely private freedom shower out on your deck and they do have a poolfor guests touse, a pool table room with other games room items. We explored the small towns on either side and kayaked to captain cooks momument. It was a perfect place to come home after the end of a busy day and relax cook dinner( grill if you like) and listen to the sounds of the outside world. Highly recommend!~

A truly memorable experience; 2 weeks is just not long enough!

Guest: Lynda H (La Crosse, WI)
Date of Stay: 10/15/11 Review Submitted: 10/26/11

Wayne and Jo provide just about every amenity one could possibly ask for, easily competing with any resort while not having to compete with other guests. There is no other experience like knowing you have complete private access to the pool and lovely grounds, or being able to just be entirely yourself without any reserve or judgment. Pride of ownership is obvious in this wonderful little getaway, and if it is privacy you seek, Wayne and Jo will happily accommodate you. That said, they are available to answer any questions or provide any advice or guidance about places to see or things to do. I will not rehash what other reviewers have said, but let me be clear that the accommodations are comfortable, clean and thoughtfully complete. My husband has to adhere to a gluten-free diet, so having access to a fuly equipped kitchen was a Godsend. The location is ideal for exploring both sides of this wonderfully diverse island. If a secluded Shangri La is what you seek, look no further...

We just spent a glorious 11 days at this cottage. Wayne and Jo are the perfect hosts, this is an amazingly beautiful, quiet place to spend a relaxing vacation. The grounds are like a botanical garden, the sound of the crickets and frogs at night lull you to sleep, the comforting sounds of the chickens almost make us want to get some. The bed is wonderful. Great place to stay on the Big Island

Guest: Hille and Hartwig (Berlin, Germany)
Date of Stay: 08/29/11 Review Submitted: 09/07/11

We stayed at the cottage for a bit more than one week and really enjoyed the time. The cottage is excellently equipped with everything you need, including beach gear, snorkel equipment and a full set of kitchen utensils. As a guest you have your own sundeck, swimming pool, game room with pool billard and table tennis. We did not use all of it as we were travelling around on the Island as well. The cottage is located close to South Point and the Volcano National Park can be reached in a bit more than an hour. It is also approximately one hour south of the airport and 45 min south of Kailua-Kona. Jo and Wayne are very kind and knowledgable host, who can provide you with good hints regarding things to do on the Island. Don't forget to try some of the coffee, which Jo and Wayne grow. It is delicious! In the evenings you will hear a wonderful concert of various animals while watching the marvelous, unobstructed sunset over the Pacific Ocean. This is a nice place to relax and enjoy the nature, while having the opportunity to visit the sights of Big Island after a short trip (good snorkeling and swimming beaches bays are close by).

30th anniversary get away

Guest: Cathy and Jeff (Painesville, Ohio)
Date of Stay: 08/12/11 Review Submitted: 08/20/11

We chose Wayne and Jo's hideaway based on the wonderful description of being both private and accessible to activities. It was extremely clean, spacious and well equipped. What we did not expect was their generosity with their time, knowledge about the island's history, and information regarding activities on the island. Their vacation home goes beyond what we could have imagined, and the extras were unexpected and appreciated--from fresh fruit anytime to the use of their snorkeling equipment, pool and pool table, and of course, the OCEAN VIEW. We awoke each morning to a peaceful quiet, and after breakfast were always aware of the quiet cooing of their flock of chickens(truly happy quiet birds). We were free to wander the property, full of a diversity of plants, trees and flowers(Jo's passion). We had stayed on Oahu for a couple days before coming here, and after the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, this was truly a paradise. We are already in discussion about a return trip. I would recommend the following for tours/trips-Kapohokine Lava tour, the Body Glove historical dinner tour; Ke'ei cafe on Rt 11 toward Kailua and the Kona Brewing Co. in Kailua for dinner; "2 step" in Kealakekua for snorkeling(Jo and Wayne will give directions), Punalu'u Black Sand Beach for the best turtle viewing and an amazing black sand beach. Downtown Kailua is great for wandering, shopping, and watching the sunset, and don't miss the Painted Church and the Place of Refuge in Kealakekua. Oh and of course there are the coffee stops.. So many things to do, never enough time..Enjoy Wayne and Jo's place..it's truly a wonderful get away...

Our stay was wonderful. Wayne and Jo are wonderful hosts -- always willing to do whatever it takes to make everything perfect -- and the cottage is great. The view is magnificent and you couldn't ask for more privacy or security. One of the advantages of being south of Kailua-Kona is that it only took us a little over an hour to get to Volcanos National Park -- OK, so it took more like two and a half but that's because we stopped at the southernmost point of the U.S. The town of Captain Cook about 15 mins. north has a reasonable grocery store and tons of cute shops and cafe's. Do take in at least one coffee farm tour!

We just happened upon Uncle's Wayne's 100% Kona Coffee Estate by chance. We knew we were going to spending a few day's in Kona and needed a place to stay. We turned to the VRBO web site to answer our quest and Uncle Wayne's Coffee Estate was one of the first properties to appear before our eyes. The picture of the cottage above the canopy of tree tops was both intriguing and beautiful. The quite and tranquility was just what we were needing to calm our frayed nerves. The pictures were accurate and the cottage was all that it described in the listing. The property is both beautiful, well maintained and sparkling clean. Wayne was accomodating with last minute booking's such as mine. We were literally waiting for our baggage at the airport when we confirmed our stay. Wayne uses Paypal, check or cash. I would like to thank Wayne and Jo for the most wonderful stay in my memory. My husband and I fet at home, well cared for, and grateful for this setting. I would never have expected such special attention. Thanks for creatng such a treasure. Remember to stop at Costco, on your way out of the airport, to get your groceries before you continue to the Estate!

Transported to Eden!

Guest: KellBell (Sacramento, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/20/11 Review Submitted: 07/26/11

We were initially skeptical of being so close to the owners of the cottage, but once we arrived, we were instantly transported to a place fitting of the description of the Garden of Eden. And the owners were equally amazing...gracious falls so very short of their desire to be hospitable--wanting us to be as comfortable and content as possible, yet also un-intrusive to our daily lives while in this paradise. I stood on the deck one morning and was overwhelmed by the beuty, peace and splendor of Wayne's World...it literally brought tears to my eyes. My husband and I both prefer to vacation in a location only once, because we prefer to explore all the other places this amazing world has to offer, but THIS diamond is one we have already agreed to re-visit. We have made it our goal, before even departing, that we will be back in three years.

Decisions? Decisions?

Just bring food and your favorite beverage. Then you'll be faced with major decisions! Sun deck, sauna, swimming pool, or a game of pool? Can't make up your mind? Take a nap on that great bed or watch that big screen TV until you feel inspired enough to move! Wake up with a refreshing outdoor shower. The key is - RELAX! If you run low on food, there's a decent market on a mostly stright road about about 15-20 minutes south. I think the Hawaiians invented "manana"!

This was EVERYTHING we were looking for, private cottage, private deck, our own private pool with its outdoor bar and ping pong table was great fun.The game room was so inviting , pool table, darts the massage chair . A place where we didnt have to leave if we didnt want to. Waking up to the smell of the beautiful flowers all over the property was so "Hawaii" Close to private beautiful beaches and snorkeling and close enough to shopping if you wanted it. Everything in the listing was exactly like it stated and its even better than the pictures. We went to the beach all day and then back to our cottage and could never think of a good enough reason to leave, it has anything you could need, and of course the owners Wayne & Jo were so down to earth and there if we needed them but really left us to our own privacy. We loved it so much we are definatly returning. Make sure you get your groceries before you get there, you wont want to leave. If your looking for the toursit feel and nightclubs this is not the place for you, but if your looking for a place to unwind from the hustle & bustle of everyday life and want a romantic, quiet, secluded vacation this is the place!!!! A piece of Heaven in Paradise!! Thanks again to Wayne & Jo and "Sweetie Pie"

Everything we had dreamed of ...

Date of Stay: 04/28/11 Review Submitted: 05/06/11

I first spotted this little piece of paradise on the internet nearly two years ago and thought "we must visit." We finally made it and for the last nine days, Wayne and Jo have made sure that our first trip to Hawaii has been everything we dreamed it could be. While we spent most of our days exploring all around the island, we always looked forward to the end of the day when we would return here, to the night sounds of the tree frogs serenading us into sleep in the huge and perfect bed. We looked forward to each day waking with the chickens, drinking coffee on the deck overlooking the ocean and soaking in those first rays of sun. After a perfect shower in the outdoor "freedom shower," we were ready for another great day on the island. From the beautiful and secluded beaches, to the entertaining and fun parade in Hilo, to quiet contemplation of ancient life in the eyes of the sea turtles and the petroglyphs etched into volcanic rock, we would return each evening to this perfect spot. Wayne and Jo are perfect hosts and we appreciated their knowledge and help getting us to some of the best places we visited. Everything they say about the property is true. It is clean, spacious and well-equipped for everything from sitting out on the deck, taking coolers and chairs to the beach, cooking and eating back at the cottage and even a late-night dip in the new pool. It seems they have thought of everything and as I write this review on our last day here, we are anxious to schedule our return and will recommend this property to friends back home who might be looking for a somewhat secluded paradise with easy access to all of the attractions of the Big Island.

Gem on the Island

What can I say other than this was hands down the favorite place we stayed on our recent trip. Wayne and Jo were incredibly warm and welcoming and literally had thought of every detail. The cottage was HUGE for the two of us and had every amenity we could have asked for on a trip to the Big Island. Giant porch with sweeping views, fragrant plants surrounding the cottage, not one but two amazing showers (one inside and one outside), full kitchen, and quite possibly the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. Additionally, they had all the gear you needed to make sure you could go out and explore for the day be that hiking, snorkeling, boogie boarding, swimming, or just lounging in the sun. The cottage is also incredibly convenient to get to black/green sand beach as well as our favorite snorkeling spot - 2Step. The grounds are spectacular - both are quite the gardeners with every tropical fruit plant and flower you could imagine - and you must get a walk through of the coffee picking to roasting process - Wayne clearly knows his way around a coffee bean. His coffee is some of the best that we had on the island. If you are looking for a fantastic rental with lots of space, convenient to some of the star attractions on the island - look no further - Wayne and Jo have it dialed in! I know that we will be back again...

Wonderful Base for Enjoying Activities or for a Restful Retreat or Combo!

When I first read the reviews, I thought "This is too good to be true." I took a risk and decided to venture outside of the resort stay for this return visit to the Big Island. I have just returned from an April 2011 stay. The reviews are correct---the Whiteside's cottage is a perfect place to stay. It is furnished with the comfort of the guest in mind. The Whitesides were perfect hosts in welcoming us and provided us with information and assistance. They respected our privacy but were available if needed. We really hated to leave but the reality is that when we return to the Big Island, we will return to Wayne and Jo's hospitality and comfortable, cottage. This is a remarkable value compared to overpriced hotels and resorts which deliver far less. We found it a great base for all of our activities on the Big Island....parasailing, hiking the volcano, ziplining, etc. but when we finished our activities, we felt as if we were returning "home." Yes, we considered it a "home away from home," one very clean with all that was needed. Can't be this good? Yes, it is!!!

Wow - how do you even describe perfection! We just came back from a day on the ocean with Sea Quest charters (this outfit is a must do as well) and are sitting on the deck over looking this beautiful estate and the ocean. The apartment is amazing. It is spotless, extremely well maintaind, and has everything you will ever need. From the travel mugs to hold coffee for the early morning adventures, to the full kitchen for those nights when you want some down time, we just could not ask for more. The loction is ideal as well. We have perfect access to the Volocano and black and green sand beaches in the south east to the white sand beaches up north, it just has worked out wonderfully. Whether you want a base from which to go go go, or a place to kick back and relax, this is it! This our first stay, but it will not be our last!!

We call our March visit to Jo & Wayne's cottage at Papa Bay a return to paradise. This was our second visit to four acres of tropical fruits, coffee trees, exotic orchids and a couple of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Since our first visit Wayne added a giant deck on the cottage, an outdoor shower, washer & dryer and is nearing completion on an above ground pool. The pool will have a deck, privacy fence and change room. The cottage has a very complete selection of pots, pans & utensils as well as chairs, umbrellas and coolers for your beach excursions. Stop at Costco in Kona and Choice mart at Captain Cook so you can stay for days and really slow down and relax. The cottage also comes with a gas grill so you can BBQ Hawaiian caught Tuna, Marlin & Mahi Mahi. The evenings at Papa Bay are cool unlike the sometimes oppressive heat on the Kona side of the Big Island. Star gazing is fantastic since light pollution is low at Papa Bay. If you must play tourist, areas to visit include Captain Cook, the Painted Church, Place of Refuge, snorkeling at Two Step (Honaunau Bay), Ho'okena Beach Park or Miloli'i Beach Park. You can rent kayaks at the town of Captain Cook and paddle Kealakekua Bay and snorkel around some fabulous coral heads near the monument marking the location where Captain Cook was killed by the natives. Sitting in a deck chair on the cottage deck with a tropical drink in hand is the best way to recover from a hard day of recreation. Wayne has upgraded the cottage with an expensive, wonderfully comfortable king sized bed & pillows. The cottage is the only place we have ever stayed where there is room to dance in the shower. Papa Bay must be magic as Wayne & Jo get younger with every visit. Four days at Papa Bay was too short so we'll plan to stay longer on our next visit.

We had a warm welcome by Wayne and Jo at their private getaway on the Big Island. This is only our first day, but we wanted to write a review right away. We love the amenities, bbq and furnishings. It's a nice walk around the gardens, and the chicken's are a hoot. Got to meet Wayne's little dog Sweetie Pie, and his birds. We are sorry that his new pool isn't quite finished, but look forward to enjoying it upon our return. There are fantastic beaches in this area, it's a great area for exploring. We are traveling with our disabled daughter, and the place is very accommodating. Thanks for the aloha.

A dream come true!

We stayed at Wayne at Jo's private paradise during the first week of Feb., 2011. Spectacular in everyway. The view from the deck is awe inspiring. Sunny warm afternoons looking out at the ocean. Comfortable evening breezes watching the sunset. Spectacular velvet black skies at night. We were able to see constellations in the southern sky that we had never seen before from our home in Michigan. The Whitesides are the perfect hosts. We had fresh eggs from their own chickens, and the best Kona coffee grown right on their property to start each morning. A great location to explore everything from South Point and the Volcano to the excellent beaches of Kona all the way to Kohala. They supplied us with everything....boogie boards, snorkel equpment and fishing poles..and we used it all. When we re-entered our private gate and up the private, winding driveway to the cottage each day, we felt as though we were in our own secluded paradise. Wayne and Jo were always close by to help if needed--but we felt as though we were enjoying our own tranquil solitude. The amenities inside the cottage are outstanding. King size tempurpedic bed--fantastic!. Direct tv with a 55 inch screen--(we only watched the superbowl, but it was worth it). The indoor rain shower is great, the the outdoor shower on the deck is fabulous. Plenty of luxurious towels, well equipped kitchen, deck furniture as comfortable as any I have seen. There is nothing they have not thought of to make their guests comfortable (including wifi). All we can say is...wow! Stay here...close enough to explore, but away from the bustle of Kona. Stay here..you will have the time of your life.

An Escape to Paradise

Date of Stay: 01/09/11 Review Submitted: 01/22/11

My wife and I just returned home from a 12 day stay at Wayne and Jo's cottage. It was one of the most relaxing and peaceful holidays we have had in a long time. If you want peace, quiet (if you like the sounds of nature and nothing else) and an amenity rich cottage then this is it. The grounds are lush with tropical plants, many of which bare something edible. The fresh eggs and coffee provided for our use was excellent as were the advertised amenities (thermopedic mattress, big screen tv, and two great showers). Our hosts were available when needed but invisible when we didn't. Jo was full of local knowledge of the local culture and all of Wayne's suggestions on beaches and places to eat were right on. The property is a drive from many attractions and amenities but that was a good thing for we would have never had the quiet and darkness to view the night sky like we were the only ones on the planet if we were stuck in a populated area. Besides, some of most beautiful and unique beaches are located in the southern part of the island. If you are looking for a taste of paradise without the tourists, noise, congestion and day to day hassle this is the place.

This cottage is perfect for us. We've been twice and will definitely return. It's spotlessly clean and well-appointed. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking, and the bed is super comfortable. Love the ocean-view deck. Best of all, it's far away from resorts and cities, perfectly quiet except for the birds and surf. It's a great location for exploring the volcano or the beaches north of Kona. Very close to some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island. Private and relaxing.

My husband and I recently spent a week at this cottage. We loved it! I was a little worried that we would be far from the main attractions, but it really was a perfect location. We were a reasonable distance from everything-black sand becahes, green sand beach, luaus, the volcano, waterfalls, whale watching in kona, etc. The cottage was extra clean, had all the amenities of home and was the perfect place to escape to after finishing our sightseeing for the day. We can't wait to go back!

Home Away From Home

Date of Stay: 12/04/10 Review Submitted: 12/11/10

My husband and I spent 8 nights at this wonderful cottage. We found it to be exactly as described by Wayne, the owner. The location was quite excellent. It is away from the very touristy Kona-Kailua area but we were well positioned to take day trips in every direction. We explored the entire island with the cottage as our base. We had really fantastic restaurants in every direction. We made breakfast in the morning with the fresh eggs that Wayne delivered to our door and the coffee that he grew and roasted on his property. Other than that, we preferred to find food in area restaurants once we discovered how beautifully prepared the food is in Hawaii. Lots of delicious, healthy food within 20 - 30 minutes. We swam many days at Hookena beach, about 20 minutes away. Two favorites: Keei Cafe, Annie's Burgers. We loved Hana Hou for the absolutely sweet Hawaiian decor. We didn't spend a lot of time n the cottage because there is so much to see and experience, but the place felt very clean, comfortable and cozy. It is an amazing bargain and we're sad to leave.

Great Escape

Guest: stuart (Davis, california)
Date of Stay: 11/24/10 Review Submitted: 11/27/10

My fiance and I had an excellent stay at this cottage. We came here to escape and recharge before returning to our hectic schedules. This is exactly what we did. We can't speak more highly of the cleanliness and the way the cottage is stocked with appliances/utensils. The cottage is designed so that you have a peaceful self contained retreat. The cottage has everything you need to hang out for days, as long as you come prepared with your own food (plan ahead as it is an hour drive back to Kona). If you do not want to cook, or if you want to go out to restaurants, this is not the place for you (unless you want to drive). We went to Hookena beach a couple of times, which is awesome, but expect this drive to take 30 minutes. The cottage is a realistic drive from the Volcano National Park (about 2 hours), and make sure you stop at America's most southern bakery and see the green turtles on the black sand beach along the way. It is all the little extras that just make this cottage such an excellent stay, for example, waynes welcoming nature and attention to detail, home grown 100% Kona coffee, free range eggs, free wireless internet (for those of us that can't afford to totally escape for too long), the massive TV and the wonderful king sized tempurpedic bed (we are putting one on our wishlist). Thank you Wayne and Jo, we hope to come back some day.

We stayed at at the Coffee Estate in October 2010. The setting is tranquil and the accommodations are very private, clean and well maintained. We LOVED the outdoor shower and sunsets over the ocean. The atmosphere was perfect - just what we were looking for. The fresh eggs and coffee were a real treat. Wayne & Joe thought of everything, but stilled asked for any suggestions. Highly recommended!

The amenities were exactly as described - it has everything you could possibly need....the bed is awesome. Grilling on the deck in the evening and watching the sunset was so much fun. And we had no idea there were that many stars in the sky. We highly recommend this property and hope to be able to return someday soon. Mahalo.

Date of Stay: 10/27/10 Review Submitted: 11/01/10

The only regrettable thing about our stay at this beautiful cottage is that it didn't last longer. This is without doubt a most unforgettable place. Wayne and Jo, along with Sweety Pie are the perfect hosts. Always available but always respectful of your privacy. This is without a doubt the best equipped condo we've stayed at on these Islands. It has EVERYTHING. The location is private and views and grounds are magnificent. It's close enough to everything, but you come back to a peaceful setting, away from all the commotion of the condo complexes and resorts. You can feed the chickens, check out the pheasants, walk the grounds, talk to Wayne and Jo, listen to the night symphony of all the critters and gaze at the inky black sky with a billion stars. A total Hawaiian experience. Our wish is to come back but spend more time. Mahalo, Wayne and Jo for your vision of sharing your slice of paradise. Hoping to return. Sally & Big Jim. Rock Island, IL

Date of Stay: 10/20/10 Review Submitted: 10/25/10

This is a great place. The owners have done a wonderful job creating a marvelous property. It is a great "base camp" for both exploring north to Kailua and beyond or exploring south and east to the volcano, being centrally located between the two. The owners are great hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed going out on adventures during the day and returning to the tranquility of the property to enjoy the sunset, cooking and eating dinner and then relaxing in front of the TV before going to sleep. The elevation of about 1500 ft. means a nice cool evening/night after experiencing the heat of the beaches. Whether you are here for a romantic getaway (we were here for ours 20th wedding anniversary) or a new adventure (or both) this is the property for you. From here you can go to tourist heavy areas, or easily go to out of the way places generally only locals go to. I cannot rate or recommend this property highly enough. Do not hesitate to book this property! The owners are ethical people who can be trusted and relied upon.

Excellent property and well priced

Date of Stay: 09/23/10 Review Submitted: 10/08/10

We stayed at the cottage for four nights as part of our honeymoon. After staying on Kauai, I won't say it was the most beautiful place we stayed, but it was certainly by far the best value. The grounds leading to the cottage were lush and pretty as was the view from the deck, which has been expanded since the pictures we saw were taken. In terms of seclusion it should be noted that the owners home isn't far from the cottage, which at first seemed a little surprising after reading reviews describe it as secluded, however Wayne made it clear to us that they fully understand privacy and it was always respected. The deck points towards the sea and away from the other buildings and we always felt comfortable. The amenities were great and as described, especially the TV and comfortable bed. The water pressure in the shower seemed a little low to me, but I've no idea if that was typical and it's probably the fact that at home our water pressure is the opposite extreme. (I sometimes feel like the water must be ripping my skin off at home: it's pretty ridiculous.) In any case it was very much usable and not a problem. Given the beauty and the amenities, the price is great. But best of all, they seem to be lovely people. Upon arriving at the cottage we were immediately put in a good mood by Wayne's tour and I was very thankful for that. They seem to be constantly improving the cottage and amenities and working to make guests happy and that's worth a lot. Wayne's game room is also amazing, and (as is probably the case with most men) it makes me very jealous. Very impressive place and strongly recommended. A great stay... just wish we could have been there longer!
