We were visiting the Big Island on our honeymoon and the house was very nice. Rhona, the owner was very very helpful, thank you so much. It ws a bit further from Kona than we thought but the overall value was very nice.

No rental gets better than this! From the very first email sent inquiring about availability, Rhona was a great person to work with. This property is very well maintained, clean, easy to get to, and in the right location! Our family especially liked to gather on the front lanai after a day of touring the island, or at the beach, watch the beautiful sunsets, and discuss our day! The guest comment book was very helpful to determine the better touring places, and beaches to visit. Nice quiet neighbourhood, which was just far enough out of the city. I will highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for that home away from home while travelling....you will not be disappointed!

This place lives up to its billing. The place is simply gorgeous, both outside and inside. The views from the front lanai are fantastic and the amenities in the house make you feel it is a 'home away from home'. Marc and Rhona's organization and attention to detail made this one of the easiest places to stay in our experience using VRBO. Located in Captain Cook, it's close enough the city to get the things you need, but far enough away to feel like you are 'south of the tension zone'. This place is a great kickoff point to visit the volcanos in the south and zipline Umauma Falls on the east side of the island in Hilo. Believe me, you'll be patting yourself on the back if you pick this place to stay on the Big Island!

This was our 1st Trip to the Big Island and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay! Very Relaxing and comfortable with spectacular view. The house was perfect for us and we will definitely return. Mahalo Marc and Rhona for having this beautiful home to share with us. one thing you might think about having there is life vest for people that aren't strong swimmers so that they may enjoy the black pebble beach for snorkeling or just to be able to float in the ocean. Thank you again! Kari & Pat - Lakebay WA

Thank you Marc and Rhona for allowing us to rent your beautiful home for almost a week. You provided us with a wonderfully relaxing, comfortable place with a most enjoyable view from the front lanai. We were fortunate to experience some gorgeous sunsets from that viewpoint. The house was clean, spacious and very well equipped. In all aspects, it met our needs (actually exceeded them.) Greatly appreciated your personal touches, particularly the quilt you made and hung on the wall of the master bedroom loft. Beautiful!! The location was perfect for us. We wanted to be able to visit Kailua-Kona but “live” out of its stepped-up pace. Great spot for a drive from Volcano (stayed there first) and other sights and activities in between. Loved the indoor/outdoor geckos. Reminded us of our living in Malaysia a number of years ago. The colorful green ones were a delightful surprise. I only remember single toned brown or tan ones in Southeast Asia. Appreciated the pre-trip correspondence. Thank you for the prompt responses to my inquires and requests. Thank you also for the very speedy return of our security despot. All-in-all you provided my husband and me with a most enjoyable Hawaiian pre-anniversary holiday. We heartily recommend a stay at Hale Pualani.

Kona Paradise is a great spot to relax and enjoy the island with family and friends. It's a quiet location with easy access to all the wonderful activities on the Big Island. The owners are very helpful and the property is clean and well-maintained. I give it my highest recommendation.

Aloha: I had been searching the internet for just the perfect place to bring my grandson/daughter for a holiday adventure. It was my grandson's 19th birthday and high school graduation present. When I saw the photo's of Hale Pualani I knew I had found my home away from home. What a beautiful, peacful and joyful experience. Every morning to awaken to blue skies and the magnificant Pacific Ocean view from the loft bedroom...wowsier! We each had our own room and it was far enough away from Kona and all the tourists yet close to the volcano and Hilo. If you are looking for a quiet location breathtaking scenery, beautiful plants on property and the most comfortable home..then look into the Hale Pualani..you will not be disappointed. Also...Rhona is the kind of land lord we all want. Kind, thoughtful, generous with ideas and making sure that everything is to your satisfaction in your home away from home. My grandson said..."Nana, I'm loving it".. Can't get any better than that in my book. Mahalo Rhona & Marc

Our family of four (kids ages 14 and 11) had such a great stay on the Big Island and loved your home. It was like staying in a friend's really nice cottage with all of the comforts of home and more. The kitchen had everything for us, even spices and some condiments. We enjoyed the house geckos as they popped up every now an then. They're adorable! The beds are SO comfortable and the nightly rains soothes you to sleep. What's better than that?!? We read the reviews in the guest book and found that the best waves for boogie boarding are at Hookena Beach which is so close and more of a relaxed atmosphere. The diversity of this island is outstanding and it seems like a science class everywhere you go. We really like being away from the crowds in Kailua-Kona but felt that it was close enough for us to visit after our snorkeling boat ride and for an evening luau. The coffee plantations and macadamia nut farms are also nearby so there was something to do each day of stay in your home. the volcano is less than a two hour drive. The restaurants are so fresh and friendly, too. There is nothing bad to say about your home or the Big Island. We truly enjoyed every minute of our stay in Hawaii this time, thanks in part to your home.

We stayed in this comfortable home from Jan 2-9. The location is great if you want to experience more than the tourist part of the island. Accessibility to Capt Cook, 2 Step and Hookena was wonderful. We even felt comfortable driving to view the glow of the volcano in the national park at night. The home felt spacious and there was a very social geko who joined us each morning while we enjoyed coffee and the view from the tiki bar.

We are just leaving "Kona Paradise" and we have had a fantastic week at the end of our 4 week holiday on the "Big Island". This home is in a great setting - far enough from Kailua to feel like you have really gotten away - and putting you in a great position to visit some of the best beaches and snorkeling spots - as well as going south around the island to South Point and Volcano. Everything you need for cooking, relaxation and enjoying the beach activities is here so you can just pack a small suitcase and Enjoy!! It is a beutiful home - nicely furnished and great view over the ocean Thanks Rhona & Marc! Don and Carol

We stayed a month and The owners couldn't have been more helpful. A couple of minor problems were dealt with promptly. The view, the quiet neighborhood, the location away from the tourist hub and closer to Volcano and Hilo were all big pluses. The house is pretty, exotic and exceptionally well equipped and comfortable. Nearby Hookena beach is one of the best on the island and not overused. All in all this is the kind of place where one could live for a while and really feel a part of the island. Thanks Marc and Rhona, Michael and Jill

When we saw the photos of this house, we were pretty excited about our stay... And when we arrived, our high expectations were more than met! This house is gorgeous, comfortable, welcoming, and so very well-appointed. You will be pleasantly spoiled! We were three couples traveling together, and we all fit easily into this spacious house. Its location, as noted by other guests, really is ideal. We pretty much pinched ourselves every day because it was such a dream. To top it off, the owners are remarkably nice, warm yet professional - and they've included numerous thoughtful items throughout the house that just further enhance your stay. The house, and the owners, set the bar pleasantly high! Thanks for everything.

My wife and I spent a week here with our three kids and had a lovely time. The home is spotless, nicely furnished, and located in a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of Kona and the artificiality of the tourist-intensive condo spots further north. We enjoyed the views by day, the sound of the rain by night, and the absolute stillness, save for the birds, each morning. The location is perfect: day trips to the classically beautiful beaches and sites up north (Hapuna, Mauna Kea, Kiholo, Kahalu'u, Honaunau) and to the south and east (South Point, Green Sand Beach, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, HI Volcanoes Natl Park, Kapoho Tide Pools in Puna). The kitchen has everything one might need to cook up a good meal, and the house itself is full of light-filled, airy spaces where one can curl up with a book or play a game of chess or strum a ukulele and still feel a part of the vast blue ocean and sky that fronts the property.

I stayed in the house for 5 nights starting Sept 6. We then moved to Hilo for 3 more. I only wished I had booked this house for the entire trip, although it would have been more driving. The house is just as pictured. It is very nice both on the outside and inside. The lania wraps around it and gives wonderful views of the ocean. The home sits about 1,000 feet above the beach and this gives it some very nice breezes and nice temp,s .This was my frist but not last trip to Hawaii and in the future I will try and stay here again.

We found the house to be even nicer than the pictures. Sitting on the lanai, high above the ocean was a great treat. We did a lot of the things already mentioned and had a great time! I will mention a few highlights that might help future guests. At Volcano National Park, we really enjoyed the 4 mile Kilauea Iki Trail. We went CCW and thought that was easiest on the climb up. The kayaking and snorkeling at Kealekakua were definitely worth it. We rented everything from a "wildcat" crew right at the end of the road. The equipment was not all top notch, but everything worked well. We went to Kiholo Bay (county, state?) beach a few miles north of the airport. A short drive down a gravel road. Truly a local's place. Saw a lot of turtles and very Darth Vadersque crabs. We spent a rainy day at Holualoa Village (more or less east of Kailua). Some good galleries and shops. Had a great time with a ukulele maker. Had a wonderful lunch at the Holualoa Garden cafe. Overall, we were very glad that we chose your home away from the commercial area. The flowers, the view, etc were great. We really enjoyed waking up to the birds singing. The kitchen and the sound system were also very well appointed and made it very easy to cook and enjoy our time at the house. You have done a wonderful job setting things up.

We really enjoyed our stay, and here are a few of our activities. * National Volcanic Park * Botanical Gardens * Night snorkeling with Manta Rays * Massages at "Hawaiian Island Retreat in Kapaau * Lots of eating - Mi's Italian Bistro in Captain Cook was incredible, Big Jake's BBQ was also a favorite Mostly we really liked lounging on the lanai, relaxing, having a drink or two, or three etc. It was definitely a much needed relaxing getaway.

Thank you for opening your beautiful and relaxing home. We loved every minute of our stay. We walked down to Pebble Beach - very steep but a good way to walk up! We initially had trouble accessing the Internet - thank you for your help with that. For kayaking at Kealekakua Bay (if you are going to rent) go to the second spot across from the State Park at the end of the road. They were cheaper that the first. The kayak trip across and snorkeling at the monument were fabulous. Mahalo!

We have recently returned from Hawaii's Big Island after staying at this lovely place in Kona Paradise. The house is lovely, with new bamboo floors, a lovely garden surrounding the house, a great kitchen and living space with truly beautiful views of the sunsets over the ocean. The house is perched on the of a steep hill about 1,000 above sea-level. Taking a short drive down to the black pebble beach is well worth it if only to hear the surf as it pounds the rocks. The surrounded by a lovely garden that the Rhona and Marc obviously take great joy in and the views from the lanai and living room are perfect. We enjoyed a quick outdoor shower upon returning from the beach and then drinks in the warm breeze as the sun set. The one set of neighbours that I met were friendly and unobtrusive - there was not much noise coming from any of the other houses in the neighbourhood. We liked being further from Kona, but still easy convenient to get to and find.

This was our first visit to the "Big Island" as a family and the property in Kona Paradise was the perfect place to call "home". It proved the ideal place to relax each evening with a cocktail watching the sun set over the ocean after one of our numerous adventures. We all enjoyed the submarine tour of the wrecks in Kona harbour, the helicopter tour over the volcano (and lava flowing into the sea), the amazing Hawaii Tropical Botanical gardens, and many countless trips to various green, or black or white sand or stone beaches. Tastefully designed both inside and outside, and provisioned with everything we needed, it was easy to picture myself living at "home" forever! So easy in fact that we spent a few of our days simply lazing around the house and gardens. I left the island feeling truly refreshed and reinvigorated!

This is our 5th day at the house (staying a little over a week). Hawaii truly is paradise! The house is located in a nice subdivision (prepare for a steep drive to Pebble Beach at the bottom of the subdivision, but it’s a must see!). The view from the lanai is stunning, especially when the vog cooperates (volcanic fog). We stayed at King Kam Hotel in Kailua-Kona our first night in HI, and although the hotel was beautiful, we’re truly enjoying the comfortable feeling of being in a home. (Kailua-Kona is a 40 minute drive on steep and winding roads! Be sure to consolidate trips, tours, grocery needs, etc.) The house décor suits the Hawaii style, and it’s especially nice considering the price! Great breezes! We were worried there was no air conditioning, but it hasn’t been a problem. In fact, it got cool at night. (The house could definitely use some blankets and throws! Bring long sleeves and sweat pants.) The house has some nice extras: the beach mats and beach bags at the house have made our numerous beach trips extra enjoyable! We’re also enjoying the gas grill, but we’re desperately missing a microwave! In fact, the described “fully stocked” kitchen is a bit generous, but the basic essentials are here. The house also has internet (no wi-fi), cable TV, and a DVR. Overall the house is adorable; the home photos (and additional photos available by email from the owner) definitely highlight the great Hawaii style and views! But, there were definitely some let downs: heavily-stained carpets throughout, bedroom fans are especially noisy, switches for fans don’t work, neither does the living room light. Constant gas smell from stove. Some general maintenance is needed throughout. Very little storage in bedrooms. No table and chairs or lounging furniture for enjoying the lanai.. Love the nature-friendly catchment water system, but the showers do little more than trickle and buying all drinking water gets quite expensive. Also, the pictures suggest privacy. Do know, the neighbors are very, very close. You’ll overhear TV and conversations from numerous nearby houses (although the neighbors have all been very friendly!), and the lanai is in full view of neighboring lanais. Regardless, excellent price and absolutely worth the stay, but know the photos and description provide a picture the house doesn’t quite live up to. We were initially disappointed but have settled into the home’s charm, and we certainly recognize the value. We’d return!

Owner response: We would like to take this opportunity to respond to this review - as owners we have had the privilege of staying at our home for the first time for an extended time during the winter months, doing many upgrades and taking all the feedback we have received and putting it to good use. We are happy to report the following - we have not been cold :) extra blankets on all the beds, and some additional throws, new bamboo flooring in the great room, a new microwave (installed the day after these guests checked out). We brought with us a container of treasures, including many kitchen extras - waffle maker, blender, corningware dishes, bowls, etc, etc, etc. There is also now additional lanai furniture, including a bistro table for meals on the lanai, a beautiful teak bench for your morning coffee and chaise loungers for sunning on the back lanai. The front stairs have been replaced with concrete stairs which make there way up the side of the house, along with many, many additional tropical plants added, for your enjoyment. The water catchment is what it is, and there is doing we can do about it - we have added a water dispenser in the kitchen, and guests are welcome to purchase 3 or 5 gallon water jugs on their way to the house, and stop by the free water station about 3 miles north of the house and fill them up, should they not want to purchase water. In response to the lanai - yes, our neighbor to the north does have a lanai that is higher than ours, and therefore can in theory look down on us - but graciously they have installed a privacy screen which blocks their view.Lastly, Wi-Fi has been installed. Should any other clarification be required, please contact us and we will be more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Mahalo, Marc & Rhona

Guest comments: Jennifer and Joan (San Francisco and Invermere B.C.) Thanks to Rhona and Marc for the loan of their beautiful home at 900 ft above Pebble beach with a wide view of the ocean below. The front Lanai gave us great pleasure with morning breakfast. On our return we were often able to watch the sun set. Evenings and mornings were cool until the sun appeared around 8 a.m. The living room was more than spacious for two of us .We were a mother and daughter team enjoying this peaceful room with its soft colors, great fabrics and a wall of windows overlooking the ocean. The kitchen is very well equipped and fun to work in. We used the two bedrooms off the living room. The loft bedroom looked very appealing. There are lots of local shops on Route 11 .There are three major routes leading down to our favorite spots to snorkel, swim or simply walk and rest in the tide pools or search for shells. This main artery 11 can get busy in later afternoon. We always loved getting closer to home where traffic was considerably reduced. The closest beach Ho’okena is a 15 minute drive. The Refuge, Kealakekua Bay and Two Steps are about 25 minutes away. Here you can find good snorkelling and tour a historical site..We kayaked over to Captain Cook’s Monument on rough ocean and loved the reefs and marine life that we saw while snorkelling. There are a variety of places to go each day. It was fun to start out and explore without a set plan. To open up to the unexpected. The surf can be quite high in this winter season and you have to read the ocean carefully before bouncing in. Pebble Beach needs extra awareness. We took a walk along the cliffs heading south (left) when you reach the parking area. This lava path had interesting sights of the ocean below with hidden sacred burial sites. You need good foot wear!We loved shopping for fruit and vegetables at local stores as well as finding bargains at Island Treasures Thrift Store. The house was so relaxing that we didn’t need to hurry off or return late. Hopefully we can return in the future to our familiar resting place at Pualani We had great communication with Rhona in making our plans . I asked endless questions and always got answers. Thanks Rhona for your patience and support at all times.Mahola…Joan

Sadly, we are back in Seattle! We had a wonderful stay in Kona, we enjoyed the house tremendously and look forward to visiting again~~Thank you for making the place so comfortable and for including all the great extras like the cooler, the chairs, the boogie boards (we left 2 more for you that we purchased at Walmart; didn't remember you had some at the house already!). We really enjoyed the 180 degree view from the deck and I walked up and down to the beach almost everyday for my workout; soooo much better than the elliptical! We even saw whales! We are filled with wonderful memories of our stay and are most happy with our choice of accommodations. Thanks again, Julie
