“Each day, I would ride a boogie board in the perfect surf, kayak the pristine estuary that borders the property, do a little birding or horseback riding, and tour by car and foot the scenic Sierra mountains. Then, about 9 p.m. each of the three nights I was there, I’d walk a few hundred yards from my villa to the research station. There, I worked alongside trained staff, spotting nesting turtles, then digging up the eggs for incubation ... ” The Washington Post

The lovely, vine-draped, "Casa Luna" (House of the Moon) offers a wonderful tropical experience. Casa Luna is one of 10 beautiful Villas for rent at Playa las Tortugas.

Playa Las Tortugas lies on the west coast of Mexico just 70 miles north of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas, in a setting with miles of sandy beach on our west and hundreds of acres of mangrove estuary on our east, nesting habitat for sea turtles and more than 125 species of birds.

Your scenic drive north through areas of old-growth jungle which border the coast is simply spectacular. Before arriving you might select a variety of fresh fruits and coconut products in stands along the road. Optionally we can arrange for transportation for you to and from the airport, and meals prepared by our wonderful cooks can be arranged.

Our Casa Luna is the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation. It is nestled amidst palm trees and beautiful gardens. Listen to the surf as you have your morning coffee, or fall asleep to gentle waves at night.
Each of the two king bedroom suites is decorated with rustic furnishings from the artisan community of "Tonalá. Sliding doors open to patios with views of the coconut palm grove and gardens to the beach. The suites are complemented with colorfully tiled bathrooms. King-sized beds, desks, and ample closet space and drawers help to insure your comfort.

The main floor is comprised of living room with additional sleeping for two, dining area, a well-equipped kitchen including dishwasher, breakfast bar, and a half-bath. All designed for your convenience in your vacation home. Take the opportunity to enjoy a traditional meal prepared by one of our cooking staff, or make yourself at home in our complete kitchen. Individual shaded terraces, with that "big blue" Pacific ocean view, connect to the living and dining areas providing a nice space for a relaxed breakfast or afternoon nap.

Up above you'll find a peaceful terrace that spans the entire rooftop, with its own woven-palm shade "palapa", with overhead fan. Take your favorite book and beverage. Listen to the surf, and the sounds of the many birds. It is also the perfect spot for sunbathing, grilling lunch or dinner and watching a spectacular sunset. Add a margarita or piña colada and every element is in place for the perfect tropical vacation.

Surrounding Area
Our entire state of Nayarit area enjoys one of the most favorable climates in the world. Average daily year- round temperatures range from highs of 80-85 degrees (perfect beach weather) to lows of 60-70 degrees (perfect sleeping weather). Swim year round, but consider packing a light sweater for the evenings in the winter months. Rain, when it falls, generally occurs between June and September as night-time or pre-dawn thundershowers.

You can visit small typical Mexican villages, enjoy fresh fish and other local seafood at small rustic beachfront restaurants, tour a tropical river and waterfalls, see historic San Blas, and drive up through the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains to colonial Tepic where crafts of the Huichol Indians are found.

Playa Las Tortugas has kilometers of uncrowded, clean sand beach, and a number of activities both on property and nearby such as Surfing, Wave Kayaking, Boogie Boarding, Fishing, and Shelling, Canoeing, Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Walking or Running on Miles of warm Sand Beach, and Sea Turtle Conservation activities (during season) at the Sea Turtle Conservation Camp. Frequently there is one festival or another in small towns within an hour of our location. There are a number of excursions you might take, with or without a guide.

Playa Las Tortugas is located on a section of coastline which is nesting habitat of several species of sea turtle in the beautiful state of Nayarit, Mexico 70 miles north of the Puerto Vallarta (PVR) International Airport and about 50 miles west of Tepic, the colonial capital of Nayarit.

We are happy to arrange transportation for you in our private shuttle, you may rent a car and drive your self which a large number of our guests do, or if you'd like to be more adventurous you may decide to come by bus and local taxi. We can send you details on the numerous car rental companies, or instructions on which buses and local taxis to take. It's quite easy to find your way from the Puerto Vallarta (PVR) International Airport to Playa Las Tortugas, and the roads are normally well-maintained. Your valid driver's license is accepted in Mexico, and the driving rules are virtually the same as most countries. Write us for a copy of detailed driving instructions and a map. Your scenic drive north from the airport takes less than 2 hours and goes through areas of old-growth jungle and coastal hills.

Playa las Tortugas is simply amazing! A hidden gem, indeed.

Our trip to Playa las Tortugas was incredible. I never would have thought such a beautiful, serene place still existed in Mexico. We stayed at Casa Luna which was perfect for our family of 5. Extra comfortable bed in the living room that slid out, for our 10 year old. The villa had everything we could possibly need, and more..! Aurora, our maid, was also an excellent cook! The owner had a very nice selection of dvd's and games for us. We played board games on the roof top palapa as our meal was grilling on the barbeque. We released turtles, went kayaking in the estuary, and rode horses. My favorite thing to do was walk the gorgeous, deserted beach, and of course enjoy the amazing sunsets! For maybe the first time ever, we did not need a vacation, from our vacation, when we got home. We were relaxed and at peace with the world. The biggest decision to be made while we were at Casa Luna, was what book to read next, or should we canoe over to Platanitos on Sunday to have fresh shrimp and fish. I highly recommend Casa Luna, and Playa las Tortugas to those who want to enjoy the beauty of Mexico without the crowds and hassles of the more "tourtist" areas. We can't wait to return.

A Magical Place

The drive in is long and scenic, and really helps you get into the rhythm of your vacation. We stayed there in 2001 and thought the accommodations were spacious, beautiful, well ventilated. The weather was hot and balmy and so we did get a few Mosquito bites! The additional service for meals was well worth the price- the food was home cooked and so good that nearly 10 years later we still reminisce about it. There was no night life on the property- just fine with us- quiet evenings, and sleepy mornings. We played in the beach and explored the estuary in the canoe. Flamingos, turtles, and little baby-sized alligators! Wonderful memories, we hope to get there again this year!
