Hakalau cottage description

Opened for guests in 2010, and STILL $99 a night, HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has a 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong will be the only 'noise' on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road and you will be the only guests. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!

The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Private laundry room with all supplies is available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.

A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the PATIO next to the LANAI. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

We encourage you to take the time to read our GUEST COMMENTS. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.

The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring and yes we now have WIFI in the cottage. Have fun!

Aloha,
Norm and Sheree

We spent nine nights at Hulili Farm. The cottage is exactly as advertised: clean, neat, well furnished with peace, quiet, and fantastic views. The lanai is the perfect place to relax and the cottage is within reasonable distance of various activities on the east side where the pace is much slower. The hosts were very welcoming and gracious, sharing their farm and its produce, as well as their knowledge. They were available if you needed them, otherwise they were busy tending the farm. This is the perfect place if you enjoy scenery and quiet, the only noise being the birds, frogs, breeze, and distant chickens and cows. Probably not the best spot if you need to be right next to the ocean or in the center of activity.

Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Owner response: HULILI FARM...is a farm. We are delighted to be found to be EXACTLY as advertised. Guests have told me that friends would often exclaim, "WHY do you want to stay on a FARM...you are going to Hawaii!?!" Our guests know what they want (you included) and others can choose beaches and crowds. It is YOUR VACATION... exactly as advertised! Thanks for choosing HULILI. Aloha. Norm and Sheree

Hulili Farm cottage was the perfect place to be for our escape from winter. The land, the sky and the sea here is simply not to be missed. It is indeed dazzling and magical. We have stayed in resorts, hotels and private properties on all of the islands of Hawaii, but none can compare to Hulili Farm. We were welcomed as if we were visiting family and encouraged to make this our home. And we did; the cottage was cozy, well equipped for all of our needs and the large lanai and hanging bed made it unique. Many days we chose to relax on the lanai, rather than dash off to join the tourist crowd. To experience the true spirit of Hawaii where nature abounds and one can listen to the quiet; that is what Norm and Sheree have created here. They graciously shared with us their love for the land and we will treasure our memories of this truly special place.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Owner response: Thank you for listening to the quiet. It is true relaxation to stop long enough to do that. You were the perfect guests at the perfect time and passed with flying colors the test of "farm/cottage keepers". You watched over the farm while I got to watch over my husband in Arizona. How wonderful is that memory...for us both. Our aloha, Norm and Sheree

Hulili Farm is a delightful place and we spent a great 5 nights here! It's really nice feeling like the cottage is all yours because it makes it easy to settle in and pretend for a few days that you actually live on a farm in Hawaii. The cottage is not completely private however, as Norm and Sheree's home is a few metres away and you'll often see Norm walking back and forth across the garden. One thing worth mentioning is that everything there was built by Norm, which is just such an incredible accomplishment! The views are spectacular and really relaxing. The hanging bed was obviously a favourite, although we didn't use it as much as we could have because we were out most of the day and by the time we got back it was actually quite chilly outside. The bed inside was definitely one of the best features at the cottage, certainly the best bed I have come across in a rental place. It's huge and you can adjust the softness for each side. We slept like babies those nights it didn't rain. The one night it was pouring down and because of the metal roof, the sound was amplified so much that it felt like the whole ceiling was about to collapse on top of you (bring ear plugs for those nights). It's a shame we don't like avocados because Ms Caddo would have fresh ones waiting for us each morning. Having the stalk of bananas that Norm hung from the avocado tree was wonderful though - great for morning pancakes or snacks to take out with you. The banana bread waiting for us inside that Sheree made was also delicious and a very kind touch. It's a great place for couples but I can see how suited it is for small families too. There is a good selection of movies as well as board games. There is also a lot of room outside for kids to play (as Norm and Sheree would say, "the farm is yours") and we actually played frisbee a couple of times. The location of Hulili Farm is also perfect. Not far you can go and visit the famous Akaka Falls (there are some good souvenir shops there) and further along you can visit the Tropical Botanical Gardens. Norm and Sheree were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome. If you are into golf, Norm has his very own course, but if that's not your thing then you can at least hitch a ride on his golf buggy and get a very interesting tour of the farm. We 100% recommend this place!

Owner response: 100%...thanks! Always made us feel good when we scored that on our spelling tests in grade school. Makes us smile when we score that on a review of HULILI. May your memories of Hulili always bring smiles. Our aloha, Norm and Sheree

Two months have passed since we left Hulili Farm, enough time to reflect and put our visit into perspective. This farm cottage is the proper place to learn about Hawaii’s natural world: the sun, rain, sea, birds, trees, fruits, and varied creatures. Native Pennsylvanians, we three came to the Big Island to experience a life vastly different from home. Norm and Sheree’s farm delivered. We were able to immerse ourselves in outdoor living without the crowds and noise found in a public campground. We have always camped on our vacations, but found this farm far, far better. Imagine waking up in the swinging bed on the lanai at 2am, our bodies thinking it is time to get up because back home it is. We step out a few paces into the yard, and see stars, billions and billions of them, and the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon. Then a meteor suddenly streaks over the Pacific Ocean, right in front of us. After a while we force ourselves back into bed, only to awaken again at 6am just in time for a glorious and majestic sunrise, seen right from the bed. Later, while having coffee and fresh baked banana bread, we start learning about the birds with Norm and Sheree’s help. For the next week we pick and savor many unusual fruits, shop at the awesome Hilo Farmer’s Market, and explore the island’s natural areas beyond. Our hosts are there when we need help understanding all this, and share their amazing knowledge joyfully. It is hard to leave them when the time comes. Now it is gloomy, cold November here in Pennsylvania. We can’t stop thinking about Monkey Pod Trees, longons, guavas, apple bananas, Brazilian Cardinals, coqui frogs, geckos, and even feral pigs. We miss it all and especially you, Norm and Sheree. Thanks so much, Dan, Linda, and Carol

What a wonderful place to stay! Firstly, it is just gorgeous. The farm is up high in a cooler area, and it is beautiful! Wide expanses of lawn, lychee trees, green everywhere, and a view of the ocean in the distance. The guest house is next to but private from the owners' home. Secondly, the owners are just the nicest people, and fun to talk to. They are super helpful and bring you lots of whatever fruits they have in season. We got bananas (the little, really sweet ones), longan and another one whose name I have forgotten. Also, there was fresh banana bread waiting for us when we arrived. This is a small cottage, but not super tiny. It is really a large studio, but the bed area is made into a sort of a "bedroom" as it is partitioned off with woven bamboo (or something) panels, with openings for access at each end of the bed. This makes a cozy bed area without any feeling of being closed in. In fact, it is nice and comfy and has an island-y feeling. And the bed! Oh boy, a sleep number bed! This is the only kind of bed I can sleep on for more than a couple of days, and we have one at home. I was so grateful they had this bed and it was, I will admit one of the main factors in choosing this rental. There is a futon in the living area which can open up to sleep more than the two that fit in the bed, but personally I would not want to share this small space with anyone other than perhaps a child or two. If you don't mind a bit of a crowd, you could fit 4 in this little house. And there are windows everywhere, and there is a lovely view out of every one! And good cross flow of breeze when they are all open. It is a really nice place, also. Everything is clean and relatively new, and it is built really well. There's a hanging queen sized bed on the lanai, which has mosquito netting and which can be curtained off if it is rainy or too windy. There's no built-in oven, but they do have a large toaster-type oven that you can use. There is a stovetop and a full-sized fridge. We made breakfast mostly - not doing a lot of cooking. There were too many good places to eat. We were so busy we weren't there very much. If we had had more time, I would have enjoyed just hanging around, sitting out on the lanai enjoying the incredible views, and I wouldn't have minded more time to talk to Norm and Sheree, either. This is a place I could see staying for weeks at a time. I almost wanted to move in! I'll remember our stay there with pleasure for the rest of my life!

Owner response: The goal of any host (we believe) is to create a place so "glorious and homey" that any guest would want to move in. Your review was the ultimate compliment for us. Sightseeing, swimming, snorkeling, star gazing, volcano viewing, zip lining, botanical garden viewing, eating...etc. are all the better when you can come "home" at night to a comfortable bed! Happy to be of service. Our aloha, Norm and Sheree

We had such an amazing time on the big island, and a lot of that was due to having such a wonderful place to stay. Norm and Sheree are truly kind and giving, and the cottage was just so cozy! Sheree's banana bread is epic, and our first morning there, Norm hung fresh cut bananas from the avocado tree so we dined on bananas and avocado all week! I am so grateful that we found Hulili Farm cottage and stayed here over a hotel on the Kona side. My husband and I slept outside on the hanging bed and our friend slept on the inside King bed, so there are options for every taste. I can't express how amazing it was to wake up every morning to the sun coming up over the ocean and then walk a few feet for fresh bananas. It was truly paradise. Thank you again and again Norm and Sheree. We'll definitely be back to see you again!

Morning cereal is just not the same without them is it? Happy you were amazed by it all, we are too and will keep tending the land and opening the door to "happy campers" like you. Thanks for coming. Our family (mom, dad, two 13-year-olds) just completed a wonderful week at the Hulili Farm Cottage. Norm and Sheree are gracious hosts: welcoming, helpful, and friendly, but not intrusive. Our family enjoyed that our hosts allowed us to wander the property and get a tiny taste of farm life. The cottage is simple, very clean, and well-appointed with kitchen utensils and all the appliances we needed. The hanging bed on the lanai has a wonderful ocean view--mornings were glorious! The week we visited held some rainy afternoons and evenings, but that didn't slow us down at all. We used the cottage as a base for day tripping to the Kau coast (south), the Puna coast (east), and the Kohala coast (northwest), and one trip to Kona. We enjoyed our stay immensely and would recommend the cottage without hesitation.

Owner response: Enjoyed your family and paying the first REWARD for the capture of Zorro (the gecko). Seems he has a huge family so the reward remains posted on the frige. Happy HULILI made a good base camp for all your island adventures! Our hello to the kids. (We got another pig!) Aloha, Uncle Norm and Aunty Sheree

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing week at Hulili Farm, slowing down after a busier week on the Kona side of the island. It really is a little slice of heaven! The setting is unspoiled, lush and beautiful, with phenomenal views. We found the cottage to be neat as a pin, with a better-equipped kitchen than one usually finds, including a French press pot for our Kona coffee. Super-comfy Sleep Number bed. Simplicity is the big appeal of Hulili. It feels good to shed all the “stuff” and just be there and be peaceful. Norm and Sheree love the place, and it shows. They’re genuine, friendly and helpful. Couldn’t have been better hosts. We enjoyed fresh lychee, clementines, coconut and apple bananas. And banana bread! It’s been a week and I’m really missing the bananas… just can’t bring myself to buy the regular kind at the store. Gotta go back!

Owner response: Thanks for coming to HULILI, slowing down and enjoying "the simplicity". Seems we battle against the tidal wave of "stuff" the world says we need, but "simple" just does not require the maintenance work that all the "stuff" does. Outside banana stalks ripening for your next visit....come on. Our aloha, Norm and Sheree

Hulili Farm was not our first choice of places to stay on the Big Island, but it should have been. The cottage was clean, complete, and everything else we had hoped for. Between trying lychees for the first time and playing "Where's Zorro?" we had a great time. We did not get to interact with Sherri and Norm very often as we were gone for most of the daytime hours, but we knew they were there if we needed them. We truly enjoyed the laid back environment that the farm provided and would not hesitate to stay there again if the opportunity arose. Mahalo

About the owner: The Perkins built and replanted what is now called HULILI FARM. Full time farmers, we grow tropical fruits called longan (lawn-gone) and lychee (lie-chee). There are appx. 9 acres in orchard. The remaining acreage holds house, barn, cottage and an enormous 'front yard'. Our favorite thing to do? Sit around a campfire under a full moon.

                          Why the Owner Chose Hakalau:
We were delighted with the END OF THE ROAD location, The QUIET, and the UNDEVELOPED, UNSPOILED VIEW of the ocean and surrounding country. The 500 foot elevation means better view and pleasant breezes. The land has a gentle slope toward the orchards and ocean. Here we have SOIL, not rock like most folks on the Island. The surrounding land makes it seem as if we are on hundreds of acres. When we first viewed the property we thought, 'this is what people dream Hawaii looks like...unspoiled.'

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
There is the feeling of being the only people on the island. With such privacy and space, we enjoy outside living morning to night! Mornings on the lanai as you watch the sunrise over the Pacific are incredible, as are the evening sunset colors and moonrise. We have LESS RAIN than Hilo and enjoy tropical trade winds that keep us cooler in the summer than the 'town' folks. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION is important on this island, and we have it!
