"Located only 90 minutes from San Jose, the house is beautiful, and it backs right up to the Tirmbina Rainforest Reserve. Costa Rica Luxury Rainforest Villa on the Sarapiqui River
Why the Owner Chose La Virgen
In 1983 my family bought this beautiful 15 acre property between the main road and the Sarapiqui River. It is just a few minutes from the town of La Virgen with its restaurants, bakeries, stores and other conveniences.
There is a bluff above the river at the back of the property. From this bluff there are spectacular views of the river island and thousands of acres of rainforest reserve on the far shore. A cooling breeze rises up from the river. To optimize the breeze and the view the house was built on this bluff. The 4,000 sq. ft. house was designed in two levels in harmony with the natural slope. The 38 large wrap around windows provide a 360° view. Hummingbirds feed 5 feet from the bedroom windows while toucans and parrots fly through the forest canopy. The large windows allow natural sunlight to illuminate the villa during the day and thereby minimize the need for artificial lighting. The foyer was built with a 35 foot ceiling creating a unique convection system allowing warm air leaving the house to be replaced by the cool river and mountain breezes.
The back wall facing the river has 4 sliding doors that open onto the balcony which runs the length of the house. This is one of my favorite areas. Sitting on the cushioned furniture or resting in a hammock surrounded by nature the day unfolds right before your eyes.
On the bluff beside the house we added a 600 sq. ft. outdoor entertainment area complete with BBQ, bathroom, tables, chairs and hammocks for family gatherings and parties.
To guarantee privacy and tranquility my family bought adjoining lots on each side and planted flowers, hibiscus hedges, palms and other trees as a buffer and at the same time to increase the habitat of a variety of species of birds and butterflies. This huge house and surrounding land with breathtaking views alive with birds and the soothing sound of the river is paradise for our family vacation each year.

Through the years tropical research and eco-tourism as well as dozens of tourist attractions have developed all around us.
We are 20 minutes from La Selva Biological Station (Organization of Tropical Studies) with its 400 bird species and 2 minutes from the Tirimbina Rainforest Center at the tip of the biological corridor that extends from the National Park Braulio Carrillo.
As part of the Costa Rican Bird Route we believe that by protecting and providing additional habitat to the wildlife in this biological corridor we can do our part to increase their populations and sustainability as well as contribute to Costa Rica becoming the first country to reach carbon neutrality.

Over the years we have celebrated family weddings, including my sisters, on the beautiful manicured lawns with the incredible sunset as a background. The privacy and serenity with the tropical birds, butterflies and flowers are a perfect setting for honeymoons.
On the way from the Juan Santamaria Airport you will experience a scenic 2 hour drive passing through the pristine forests of the national park Braulio Carrillo.
The biodiversity of this national park includes 600 species of trees, over 530 species of birds, and 135 species of mammals. Some of the more exotic birds to be found are the Solitary Eagle, the Bare-necked Umbrella bird, and several species of hummingbirds.
Bilingual guides give day and nighttime tours in this world renowned neo-tropical research station with over 400 bird species,1,800 species of plants and 350 species of trees.
