CEDAR KEY AREA Surrounded by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Cedar Keys consist of dozens of islands or keys. About twelve of these islands are reserved as a part of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge and several are designated as "wilderness areas". The refuge boasts some of the largest numbers of nesting birds in Florida. You will see a variety of birds year round - if you'd like to see a list of common birds, visit our website listed below.
Cedar Key is old Florida at its best. There are no chain stores and most "traffic" is on foot, golf carts, or boats being launched at the marina. You can easily walk to the restaurants and shops - no car is needed. The marina (1.5 blocks) features boat and kayak rentals and there are plenty of tour operators happy to take you on a wildlife or sunset cruise. Bicycle, scooter, and golf cart rentals are also available.
Fishing is a favorite with redfish, sea trout, grouper, spanish mackerel and whiting being the primary catch. Inshore and offshore fishing are popular - bring your boat or rent one at the marina. |
