The Red House was built in 1885 and is one of the last of its kind—a large, classic Victorian beach house that has retained its unique character and many of its original features. It is situated directly on Long Island Sound, in the Pine Orchard area of Branford, and boasts breathtaking ocean views east, west and south toward Long Island. Gorgeous water views can be enjoyed from almost anywhere in the house: in the summer from a vast waterfront porch with seating for 16, in winter from an old leather armchair next to the original stone fireplace or from the large dining room that contains a mural of the nearby salt marshes in Stony Creek (painted by a renowned World War I combat artist who lived and painted in the studio at the top of the house).
If you are looking for a superb location to graciously host a large family gathering, the Red House has all the amenities necessary. Sleeping 14 adults easily (portacribs and several folding cots are also available for babies and young children), the Red House is designed for year-round entertaining. The large kitchen has a 48” professional gas range with double ovens, three refrigerators, two dishwashers, a walk-in pantry, mud room and separate laundry room. Bathrooms have all been recently modernized yet most fixtures are period, including original clawfoot Victorian bathtubs and there are two showers on the ground floor and an outdoor shower. If you tire of swimming, walking, beachcombing or bird watching there is an extensive library, stacks of board games, three ocean kayaks, bicycles in many sizes, and all sorts of nearby attractions. The Red House is near New Haven with its many cultural and culinary attractions—from Yale University to the best pizza in America and home of the hamburger! It is an easy train journey from New York or Boston with connecting local rail service from New Haven to Branford.
