We had a wonderful stay in this home. The beach across the street is beautiful, we ate gelato next door and thin-crust pizza next door to that. Maxi's was fun and had delicious fish. Kelly gives great massages and also took us on a tour further into the reserve to go kayaking. The bus across the street to go north to the other beaches and Puerto Viejo is very convenient for those times when you want a livelier scene. But for us the village was perfect. The house itself is adorable and the owner very conscientious if anything went wrong or we needed help deciding where to go or what to do. It was a little small for 3 adults and 3 teenagers (the owner advised us of this beforehand) but would be perfect for 4 or 5 people. Highly recommended!!

A Rainy but Wonderful Week
A Rainy but Wonderful Week
We greatly enjoyed this rental in Manzanillo, a small village at the end of the road before Panama on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. We arrived by bus with no car, so location was everything. The comfortable house we rented, with a 5 star front porch!!--was 2 minutes from the beach, 4 minutes from the store--two minutes from the dive shop--8 minutes from the trail into the jungle to Panama (sloths, monkeys, yes). A great airy upper room screened in...but no mosquitos outside either. Friendly landlords, Haute cuisine cook and tour guide on grounds! Great visiting dogs and friendly people thoughout the town. What's not to like? If you like the Caribbean Creole food and atmosphere you will love this place. My one regret, weather was too bad to snorkel, but we could still swim everyday and it was still warm! We stayed, two couples--all of us in our sixties or above and were very comfortable. I strongly recommend this rental.

Intended to stay for 3 weeks January 2012, scrambled for alternate accommodation after 3 nights. Old house. Living area chair cushions dirty, home to cockroaches (it's Costa Rica, not a surprise); kitchen is small, one burner working on stove despite owner coming to fix it; large fridge, sink area has a bad smell to it; 1 usable skillet, but no saucepans that I could find; no microwave, but small toaster oven; also a coffee maker, crockpot, blender. Water cooler leaks on floor. Bathroom very small; shower stall small; tile grout is stained/dirty; around the base of the toilet it is black (covered by mat), toilet occasionally needed fixing when flapper stuck in open position; shower did not drain properly and had 'things' floating in the water -use public shower a few doors down, also a bad smell in this room. Hot water plumbed to kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. Laundry washer and dryer are large capacity. Downstairs bedroom doors open up to a view of the small house at rear of property, and the side where people walk to get to that house. Closet where safe is has a very disagreeable odour, also no light to see the combination-use flashlight (provided by bar area). Didn't use the bed, but it is on a frame with a headboard. Each room has a different level of floor - about a 1/2 inch difference. Central 'room' has an electrical problem with the overhead light, sometimes working, sometimes flickering. Somewhat steep stairs going to the bedroom upstairs. Handrail is too wide to be of much use. Overhead light does not work, but fan does - one speed. Bed is directly on the floor; no headboard; wall behind bed is covered with cloth attached to wall frame; worn, stained linens, mattress cover was sweat stained and had not been laundered; dead bugs on mattress; new pillows. Woke up with numerous mosquito bites on face and sugar ant bites on hands. Although they weren't there when going to bed, the ants were there in the early morning. No mosquito nets over any of the beds. Plenty of opportunity for mosquitoes to come in with gaps between the doors and displaced screens. A child might enjoy the bed in the 'loft' over the kitchen, can't really imagine anyone else crawling in and out of it. Front yard had a large pile of plant debris. Well maintained beach across road. Sodas in the area have edible but unremarkable food. Maxi's play music loudly and well into the wee hours some nights. Owners were responsive to calls. Not recommended to anyone. Can't post photos.

Owner response: Yes the house is old and not perfect, yes the floors are different levels where the house has been renovated, part of it's charm.Yes the handrail is wide but certainly usable. Overall this review is pretty inaccurate. We spray for roaches after each guest, all the burners on the stove work and there are a few different size saucepans in the kitchen. There is a microwave(it was being repaired when she arrived). The toilet was installed by Tico and does have dark grout as this was how it was installed in the original house. Shower works and drains fine. THERE ARE NO BAD SMELLS IN THE HOUSE.I had several people come in and stick their noses in the drains after she left and they could not smell anything. The light in the middle room was malfunctioning then and has been fixed. The beds were sprayed and left in the sun after this woman left since she said she was getting bitten. You have to do this periodically in Costa Rica. EVERYTHING including, pillows, mattress pad, sheets ,blankets was of course laundered before her arrival. There were no deadbugs when she got there but they can appear overnight here. The sheets were 2 months old 400 thread count 100% cotton purchased in the states. Unfortunately things get and stay stained pretty easily here no matter how you launder things, perhaps due to the water. Plant debris in the front yard is standard after you clean up and then you have to wait for the right time to burn it so you don't smoke people out.The leaves are needed here to replenish and protect the roots of the plants. If you rake up everything pristinely, plants don't do well, especially near the ocean.Obviously the house was not for her.
Excellent location and a cute house
Excellent location and a cute house
We stayed at this house for a week over the holidays, and had a great time. The house is roomy and mostly open air, bringing the greens of the jungle inside. You won't find many places as close to the beach as this house. Basically, you step out the door and cross a quiet road, and there you are on the lovely beach of Manzanillo. We had fun bringing the blender full of rum cocktails and the deck chairs directly onto the beach. The decor is tasteful and simple, with a lot of natural wood. We really enjoyed lounging on the outside couch set-up, listening to the waves crash. If you want to get away from the bustle of Puerto Viejo and away from other tourists, this is a good choice. All the locals we met were very friendly and accommodating. There's a restaurant within a two minute walk (Maxi's) which is excellent and good value. However, we cooked a lot of meals "at home". If you want an air conditioned, sanitized hotel experience, this is not for you. If you want a place that's more unique and more immediate to nature and in a small village, this place will work well for you. Diane and Richard were very responsive to all our requests. They will help you arrange transport to and from San Jose and will advise you on what to do while you are in the area. Thanks!!

Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: I built traditional houses to sell in Massachusetts when I was young. I wanted to build a home that was unique and special. Costa Rica with its beautiful hardwoods seemed the place to do it . My wife wanted a beach house so we bought a small house with an open permit and transformed it. It was built with care and love for my family. We have enjoyed it immensely and we hope you will also!
Why the Owner Chose Manzanillo:
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is less developed and not as heavily traveled as the Pacific coast. It is lush, verdant tropical rainforest with amazing creatures on sea and land. It is laid back and a great place to relax and unwind.
