There's definitely a difference.
And if you're familiar with vacation rentals, you already know what we're talking about.
It's not about the fifteen private, boulder-strewn acres. Not about the sunsets and starscapes that make the nights as lit up and magical as the days. It's not even about the peace, the freedom and the electric energy that has drawn people to this area since the days of the Chemeheuvi.
What we're talking about is a level of luxury, detail and aesthetic sophistication rarely seen in such a romantically remote location.
There are Rooms carved out of rock. Handmade, artist-designed interior details you've never seen, anywhere.
Inside, Boulder House combines sprawling space with the cozy intimacy of a luxurious private home. There's a fully equipped kitchen, cable TV and wireless internet throughout. Giant boulders right outside the front door. Views for days. Extensive, private hiking trails. Period woodstove (wood provided) for nights around the fire. Powerful, dual zone heat and air ...basically, everything you need to enjoy a visit to the High Desert.
We've recently expanded our sleep options, so more friends and family can join. We sleep up to 14 comfortably, in beds. and we've spiffed up the pool, jacuzzi, outdoor shower, hammock and courtyard areas, so you'll be just as comfortable outside as in.
This season, order up a long, cool vacation at Boulder House.
It'll hit the spot.

They were actually easy to deal with. they sent me all the documents on time, I didnt have that issue. The place is a wonder, its a must see. The art inside, well the whole place is one big piece of art. We are going again in the near future. That being said there are three things that could have been improved. the oven was non functioning. The pool was a funk color untill it miraculously cleared up the next day. Also I know what a hard task it is to have a pool out there. The trash was pretty full and we had to improvise during clean up. We got our deposit back no hassles. My brother and I look back at his batchlor party with great smiles on our faces.

Owner response: Thanks so much, Scott! For your appreciation of the property, as well as your understanding of some of the maintenance issues. To address your concerns: We have doubled our trash pickup, hopefully this will solve that problem. We have replaced the pool liner, I believe this has changed the caliber of the pool experience exponentially. As far as the oven is concerned, I apologize for any trouble. It's gas ( propane actually) and sometimes you do need to re-light the pilot. Instructions for this are in the "Boulder House Bible" , or please feel free to call me or the two or three other folks listed, we can always help you get it going. Thanks again for your review!

I have only left positive reviews on VRBO before and am very disappointed that I am now leaving a negative one. The Boulder House is a unique space and I would love to stay there again if it weren't for the incredibly rude owner, Barbara. She was difficult to deal with and kept passing me off to her various assistants when setting up the rental agreement, which led to several miscommunications Barbara thought appropriate to blame me for. I will not be staying at the Boulder House again.

Owner response: Boulder House isn't just a vacation rental to me - it is my heart and soul. I have spent countless hours working to let its beauty shine through, and countless more tweaking the rental process so others can enjoy it easily, as well. Scores of seamless rentals, managed by my capable, tireless staff, attest to the fact that we are anything but difficult to deal with. The problems with this particular rental are not really appropriate for discussion in a public forum. Suffice it to say that we did our best to patiently and fairly accommodate a very difficult situation. I am sorry that this guest was disappointed. I hope her negative comments do not prevent you from enjoying our beautiful desert paradise - or our warm, open, supportive hospitality. We hope to welcome you to the desert soon.

I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing opportunity to stay at the Boulder House, and each of my friends asked me to pass along their thanks as well. We had a beautiful stay and really lucked out with perfect weather. We had a great time taking pictures, hiking, cooking, playing games, swimming, and sitting out under the stars. The surrounding land is absolutely breathtaking, and rivals anything in the nearby national park. The house literally had everything we needed. Amazing house, amazing artwork, and great beds! We had a magical experience and hope to return again soon!

The house was a gem with everything you need and plenty of it. You will never run out of places to sit and enjoy a view of something beautiful, whether it's a view out your window or a painting or artifact hanging on every wall and in every nook. You will never be cold at night with the wood burning stove, great heating system, and many draped wool blankets that are draped for your comfort, or after dipping in the hot tub just off the master bedroom. You will never be too hot after dipping in the pool or keeping in the many shady spots outside while listening to chimes in the breeze (I'm sure the A/C works just as great but we didn't have the need for it). Outside is a whole other playground of it's own. We had a blast climbing the rocks and enjoying the views. A great place to BBQ and under the crisp night stars. Will definitely come back.

I... wanted to thank you personally for extending your incredibly, lovely desert home to us during our holiday. We toasted you on Thanksgiving day as we opened your generously given bottle of wine that complimented the occasion. Everyone had such an incredibly wonderful time and the memories we made will stay with us for a lifetime! We will always recommend you to our extended family and friends and hope to re-visit sometime in the future. I am so happy to know that very special home is owned by someone as lovely as yourself and that you are able to share it with others like us! Many, many thanks again, and happiest of holidays to you....

Hi Barbara, I wanted to write and tell you how much we all LOVED Boulder House. What a slice of heaven you have created there! My husband and I had the upstairs room with the skylight...OMG Barbara..that room! The raised bed, boulder walls and OMG that skylight...it is truly amazing. Such a beautiful sanctuary. I have to tell you, we rent homes quite regularly through VRBO and are frequently frustrated that even in some of the most beautiful homes, the owners use inferior 'rental style' furnishings, kitchen ware, sheets and pillows etc and we are always saying what a difference those things make...your home was such high quality in all those areas, and it makes the world of difference. You can really feel how much the home is loved, and as one of my friends said, "Why would I want to go away and stay somewhere that's not as nice as my own home" and yours was exactly the way any of us would have wanted our own weekender to be if we were to have a permenant one.

                      Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: As a director and an artist, it's not surprising that the visuals were what got us. The road wound up through the desert, the yuccas and Joshua trees becoming more and more plentiful as the signs of civilization retreated. There was Pioneertown itself, perfect as a movie set (well, it was a movie set, duh!), Pappy and Harriet's, and then, of course, the boulders themselves - massive, majestic, at once welcoming and foreboding.

Why the Owner Chose Joshua Tree:
The house itself. Of course we appreciate the cool, minimalist modernism of so many brilliantly designed or re-thought desert cabins. But for ourselves, we wanted something a little warmer, cozier. Something that felt more like home. Boulder House, with its four bedrooms ( five if you count the guest bed in the computer room), living room, dining room, TV room, outbuildings and pool, felt right. It had intimate spaces, private spaces, hang-out spaces, outside spaces, places to play and places to work. It sprawled over fifteen acres and had views of washes, a stream, the lights of Yucca Valley far in the distance. It was everything we had been looking for, and it was two hours from Los Angeles. It was home. Ours, and now, if you like, yours. Welcome.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Boulder House is a handmade house representing thousands of hours of work by various artists and craftspeople who poured their lives, labor, and love into their sanctuary in the desert. Whatever passion leads you to the desert, we invite you to add your spirit to those of the Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, dreamers, artists, and visionaries who have blessed Boulder House with theirs. If you would like to contribute a colorful piece of broken ceramic to our broken ceramic garden bed, please feel free. If you would like to document the contribution in our guestbook, or on Facebook, we would love to hear from you!
