Our 1st trip to Hawaii

Guest: Robin (Denton, TX)
Date of Stay: 04/18/12 Review Submitted: 04/26/12

Janice and Troy are so welcoming and their beach house is a great vacation get away. The location is set back in a somewhat quiet little neighborhood and the ocean view is spectacular! We now know why it's call the House of the Rising Sun. There is a lot to do in the area. Beautiful sandy beaches and great food are within walking distance or a short drive in either direction. The drive to Waikiki is a good hour (without traffic) and the opposite direction is about a 30 minute drive to Haleiwa. That's where we saw surfers, Green Sea Turtles and was a great place to relax on the beach or snorkel. Being that this was our first trip to Hawaii we don't have anything to compare, but would highly recommend staying here! Note the house is small, which is perfect for a couple or a couple with a small child. The cleanliness of the property was by far impressive and the house is stocked with just about anything you might have forgotten. As mentioned the house is right on the beach...You cannot get much closer to the sun. Mahalo, Janice and Troy. You have created a wonderful home away from home.

House of the Rising Sun is AWESOME!

Guest: Chris and Vince (Xenia, OH)
Date of Stay: 02/04/12 Review Submitted: 02/22/12

Troy and Janice were the perfect hosts. We truly enjoyed our stay. We watched the turtles come in with the tide each evening, we saw whales jumping beyond the breakers, we snorkeled over the coral reef and were dazzled by the colors and variety of fish there...all right outside the back door. The house is clean and comfortable and the furnishings are all newer. Troy and Janice went out of their way to ensure we had what we needed and even met us at check-in, spending a long time giving us tips on local favorites for dining and activities. We would definitely stay there again. Mahalo!

A Beautiful Oceanfront Cottage!

Guest: None (Otter Rock, OR)
Date of Stay: 01/13/12 Review Submitted: 02/08/12

The owners take great pride in their home. It is very clean, and well stocked with necessities. The cottage is small, but we didn't spend too much time in the house. The surrounding neighborhood was quiet the entire time we were there. We think the house is better suited for two people rather than three or four. The house has a wonderful "feel" inside...no unpleasant smells, etc., unlike some we've stayed in. There was a grocery store very close by. We "ate in" most of the time, so the close proximity of the market was a plus for us. It was only a few minutes drive to lovely beaches. Giovani's Shrimp Truck, a little further north, was one of our favorite things. We should recommend this home. Mahalo, Janice and Troy. You are doing a great job with your rental!

Great oceanfront location and fabulous hospitality!

Guest: Ann (Seattle, WA)
Date of Stay: 12/28/11 Review Submitted: 01/10/12

I spent a wonderful week at Hale O Kalahiki! It's very private, with a wonderful oceanfront location and great views down the Windward coast! The house is very comfortable - beautifully updated kitchen, very comfy mattress, incredible views from all over the house, and a lanai I never wanted to leave! I loved hearing the waves outside, all day and night, and enjoyed the ocean breeze throughout the house. It was a great location to explore Oahu from - much quieter than the city, with an easy drive to the North Shore, Hale'iwa, Turtle Bay, and everything I wanted to see! The best part of Hale O Kalahiki is the owners - Janice and Troy were so welcoming, and they gave me fabulous information about places to go, places to eat, places to visit - they really made my trip special! I arrived feeling cold, tired, and stressed out, and I left relaxed, rested, tan, and with a wonderful set of new experiences and memories! If I get to back to Oahu, I'll look forward to returning to the House of the Rising Sun!

A home away from home

Guest: Shelly (Vancouver, Canada.)
Date of Stay: 11/03/11 Review Submitted: 12/08/11

My 86 year old mother and I stayed there for a mother-daughter getaway in November. Janice and Troy were absolutely wonderful hosts. As others have said before me, the book they have put together with all kinds of information on things to do, places to eat, etc. was awesome! This super sweet couple have really put alot of thought into making everyone's stay at their beautiful beach house the best that it could be. The house is immaculate and has everything needed for a great vacation. It was real peace of mind knowing that if we had any trouble with anything, or needed help of any kind that we could call them, and that they were local. To wake up to the sound of the surf in the morning and enjoy having coffee on the patio just feet from the ocean was amazing! I would recommend this rental to anyone without hesitation, and will return myself one day. Thank you Janice and Troy for making our vacation so special!

Amazing home, amazing time, amazing experience, amazing hosts!

Guest: Love to travel (Seattle, WA, USA)
Date of Stay: 10/22/11 Review Submitted: 11/04/11

We were hesitant about renting a home, having never done this before. It was a scary proposition. However, Janice and Troy made this the most wonderful experience imaginable. I now cannot even think about staying in a cramped little hotel room. The home was stocked fully with anything and everything we needed. It felt like we were staying with family (in the best way possible). Janice was great, meeting us at the home, going over the amenities and giving us great advice about places to eat, places to snorkel, where to get the famous huli huli chicken...which incidentally was fantastic! Thank you Janice for giving us the info on where to find it. I am still craving more! The only complaint I have is that we did not have enough time to do everything we wanted to do. In our short four days, we were able to visit the Polynesian Center for a Luau and the evening show Ha, go on a snorkeling trip (thanks to your book Janice with the brochure from Ko'Olina), my mom, who was scared to go was so thrilled with the experience, visit the swap meet for souveniers (again, thank you Janice for that tip), and visit the Dole Plantation store for Dole Whip! We also were able to visit the LDS temple for our wedding anniversary. This home was so close, very convenient! AND, I am not one to be an early riser, yet I found myself excited to get up early morning to watch the sunrise. I have never seen colors in the sky like I saw from the deck of your home. My husband's only complaint is the number of sunrise pictures I collected on our camera! Thank you Janice and Troy for sharing your home and this piece of paradise with us! We hope to be back and for a much longer stay. We still need to visit Giovanni's shrimp truck and get some shaved ice! :)

Privacy in Paradise

Guest: Where to Next? (Eugene, Oregon, USA)
Date of Stay: 08/11/11 Review Submitted: 09/12/11

My husband and I were looking for a very laid-back getaway. We did not want a resort, or a Waikiki type of environment and found just what we were looking for at the House of the Rising Sun. The property is exactly as pictured and described. The owner met us to give us an orientation and to be sure everything was in perfect working order. He gave us his cell phone and his wife's just in case we had any questions. The house also comes with an extensive and up-to-date three ring binder of information about local activities, restaurants, and grocery stores. We enjoyed fabulous snorkeling, hiking, kayaking and swimming all within minutes of the house. This area is not a tourist destination and yet we found the local residents friendly and helpful. Our week was a visit to the real Hawaii, not the plastic tourist packaged version of Hawaii. Our "bucket list" is a long one, but this is a destination we definitely plan to visit again.

Beyond Expectations

Guest: Karen and Darren (Port Moody, B.C., Canada)
Date of Stay: 07/12/11 Review Submitted: 08/16/11

Even before we stepped onto the property we knew that we'd made the right choice in accommodations. Right from our first contact Janice and Troy showed a unique concern for the well being and comfort of their guests. They were so kind to meet us at the property, even though it was late. We were also greeted with a exquisite basket and wine in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and my birthday. They took the time to provide us with information to help make our trip the best it could be. Janice's extensive information binder proved invaluable. She was right - the banana macadamia nut pancakes were to die for. The 'House of the Rising Sun' exceeded our expectations. It was even better than described. It was spotless, updated and homey. We felt comfortable the minute we stepped into the house. Everything we needed for our ten day stay was there and our grocery purchases were within walking distance. We especially enjoyed watching the spectacular sunrises off the deck while drinking our morning coffee, the plethora of stars in the night sky and the sound of the waves crashing as they lulled us to sleep in the very comfortable king sized bed. Thanks to Janice's and Troy's thoughtfulness and their beautiful 'House of the Rising Sun', we had an incredible 20th wedding anniversary and birthday celebration. We look forward to returning in the near future.

Beautiful location, wonderful house, frolicking turtles

Guest: Linda Marie (Portland, OR)
Date of Stay: 06/22/11 Review Submitted: 07/08/11

My spouse and I needed peace, quiet, beauty, fun and rest. We got it. The house is in a quiet, conveniently located little town. It has a well-appointed kitchen (we cooked most of our meals), beautiful view of the mountains, is right on the water and the bed gave us restful sleep. We could go in either direction in our rental car and hit amazing beaches for swimming like Waimea bay and Kailua beach park (go to both of them). We walked to the grocery store which was great. We spent a lot of time on the porch watching the water and the mountains. Why is seeing turtles play in the water so mesmerizing for so long? The information we received from the owners was perfect. We highly recommend. The only other thing I'd say that has nothing to do with the house is that when we were there, well, it's the windward side, so it was windy. But our strong recommendation stands.

Best Honeymoon a newlywed couple could ask for!

Guest: Josh (Nashville, TN )
Date of Stay: 05/08/11 Review Submitted: 05/26/11

Troy and Janice and the House of the Rising Sun was absolutely amazing! I, literally, could not have wished for a better honeymoon. Not only was the house in amazing shape and very clean, but Troy and Janice were also extremely welcoming and informative. They gave us the low down on all of the local places to visit/eat/see. Even a locally made amazing pie (Chocolate Haupia from Ted's Bakery) that you can get across the street at the market that we had for dessert every night! We ate at all of the local joints that they suggested and they were all amazing. They even saved us money by telling us the best places to go snorkeling and sights to see! Speaking of snorkeling, it was absolutely the coolest thing that we have ever done in our entire life! Just bout 15 minutes up the road at Sharks Cove we swam with sea turtles! Anyway, we would highly recommend (and plan on telling everyone) this place to everyone and we will definitely be staying here when we go back. We already miss it and can't wait to see Troy and Janice again! Mahalo nui loa Troy and Janice! Can't wait to see you again! Aloha, Josh and Sinclair

The House of the Rising Sun made for a perfect vacation! The house itself had everything and more needed to make for a great escape and Troy & Janice had great recommendations for things to do, see, and eat. We didn't bring much with us and were not missing anything as there was fishing gear, body boards, coolers, and much more. Location was perfect as it was quick and easy to get to everywhere we wanted to go and the views off the Lanai were incredible. Extremely happy with the entire experience and would recommend the House of the Rising Sun to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing, amazing vacation experience! Maholo again Troy and Janice!

Ocean and mountains and space and peace

Guest: Debbie and Jim (Carlsbad, CA)
Date of Stay: 01/28/11 Review Submitted: 02/05/12

Yes, the ocean is that close and the views are that lovely. From the large living room you can see ocean and the marvelous mountains, changing in the light throughout the day - what a great combination! We saw turtles from the house. You do not hear regular road noise - the house is 7 houses away from the highway, which is unusual for oceanfront property in Oahu. The bedroom is large, with lots of storage. The charming hosts provide many helpful items such as coolers and beach towels, a kitchen full of everything helpful, and their famous information binder. The nearby grocery store is well stocked for its size, and a big store is 5 easy miles away. A beautiful hike is less than a mile away. The overhead lights provide plenty of light for reading at night. Enjoy!

Hale O Kalahiki

Guest: Nancy and Larry (Portland, OR)
Date of Stay: 01/21/11 Review Submitted: 02/12/11

The Hale O Kalahiki house was accurately described on the VRBO site, but there was so much more. We brought beach towels - not needed, they had several. We brought a small soft sided cooler - not needed - they have 3 coolers in the house. Also available are bug spray, first aid items, fishing equipment, boogie boards, beach chairs, books on the island not to mention the large 3 ring binder that details so many attractions on the island. And if that is not enough, Janice and Troy are a wealth of information in themselves. We loved watching the sunrises from the lanai as we drank our coffee. Thank you, Troy and Janice.

Charming!

Guest: Walt (Dallas, TX)
Date of Stay: 12/29/10 Review Submitted: 02/06/11

We recently stayed at the House of the Rising Sun and thoroughly enjoyed our visit there. Janice and Troy are lovely hosts, and Janice gave us a lot of wonderful recommendations on what to see and do, which you would not get out of reading a guidebook, and that made our visit to Oahu even more memorable. The property is in excellent condition, the view outstanding, and the gift basket we received on our arrival was a pleasant treat. Hauula is a beautiful area, and a bit away from a lot of the tourist attractions, but we enjoyed seeing the "real Hawaii" landscape, and this location was not too far from what we wanted to do..see the North Shore, the west coast; and driving to Honolulu did not take too long, and was through some beautiful coastal and countryside. We would not hesitate to recommend staying at this location, and Troy and Janice are wonderful hosts!

Silver Anniversary Vacation at House of the Rising Sun

Guest: Lorraine (Bluffton South Carolina USA)
Date of Stay: 09/05/10 Review Submitted: 09/18/10

We looked long and hard for the perfect spot to vacate in Oahu to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and chose House of the Rising Sun. Right from the start Janice was so helpful with local information and tips as to where to go, what not to miss and I felt like I knew her before we even got there, every question via email I asked she came right back with a response and more! Upon arrival Jance and Troy were there to meet us and Janice had even made up an itinerary for us with directions in case we didn't have a GPS which again was above and beyond! They had bought a welcome basket with local fruits, nuts and coffee, even some wine to have on our anniversary date, it was all unexpected and very thoughtful. The house itself was just how we imagined it, the photo's didn't do the view justic I might add. It was clean, bright and cheerful and although we anticipated eating out quite a bit we loved the deck and the sound of ocean waves so much we ended up bringing food home after a day out, cooking steak or having chicken and salad outside and enjoying the stunning beauty of this little gem of a house! The Cultural Center is closeby and well worth a visit, there is a grocery store literally 5 mins away and a few eateries very close. I would recommend this property to anyone and you are dealing with some truly dear people. This will be a vacation we will always remember, thank you Janice and Troy for allowing us to enjoy The House of the Rising Sun for this special occassion.

We chose House of the Rising Sun for our Oahu vacation destination and were glad we did from the very first contact with the owners, even before we started our vacation!! It was a perfect location for our daily excursions. We followed some of the advice provided to us. For example, the hike to Menoa Falls was really fun and a tropical jungle - far different from the 2 other hotter, drier hikes we chose on our own; 1) top of Diamond Head, and 2) Kaena Point. And, the suggested beach 9 miles west of Turtle Bay turned out to be the most fantastic turtle experience of our lives! We loved the more local feel of the North Shore versus the touristy, crowded Waikiki Beach area. The house was really well-equipped. Janice was very professional in our relationship. But, at the same time, we felt like she and her husband were friends, too. We would highly recommend this place to anyone, considering an Oahu experience. Paul and Moon

My husband and I rented this home for our 10th anniversary and it was wonderful. The sound of waves outside was soothing and we particularly liked the bathroom with an exterior window looking out at the ocean. The house was spacious, comfortable and Troy and Janice added nice touches to make it feel like home away from home. Troy met us at the house when we arrived and answered all our questions and suggeted some things to do; Janice had also prepared a great binder with lots of helpful information. We would definitely recommend staying on the North Shore, it's close to all the best beaches and Ted's Bakery, where they serve the best mixed plate on the island. Thanks, Troy and Janice!

Wonderful Little House on the Beach

Date of Stay: 02/28/10 Review Submitted: 06/06/10

I spent the most wonderful time at this little house listening to the ocean waves caressing my ears while going to sleep. The gentle wind combing my hair and voices of morning birds waking me up. The owners are true Hawaiians, Aloha People and they wee very helpful in everything. I felt their good vibe emanating in the house. I felt very safe, comfortable and relaxed there. I found a guide full of activities inside the house thanks to which I could have the best shrimps under the sun every day as they serve them just 5 minutes away from the house! Shops are close and beautiful beaches, too. Lovely, lovely, lovely! P.S. The listing description regarding the location was accurate. The photos accurately reflect the rental's appearance and amenities. The property is very clean and well maintained. I would recommend the property for everybody who wants to have wonderful time in Oahu!

So enjoyed the lovely house and surroundings - it felt like it was "home" - so peaceful - the scenery is amazing - found lots of shells and sea glass on the various beaches. The Wednesday swap meet at "Aloha Stadium" was great! Super place to buy souvenirs at 1/2 the cost of the "tourist" shops. Thank you for the warm welcome. I will remember this trip forever fondly...Kathy Janice & Troy are the best. The welcome was first rate, and the house is just...what can I say...fantastic. We made one trip to the "West" side. That was more than enough. The Windward and North Shore is the only place for me. Aloha Janice & Troy. And a heartfelt Mahalo...Robin

To hear the waves as you sleep & wake is so relaxing - just what we needed after a hectic run up to our wedding in Bermuda. We've had a truly fantastic stay here and you are both warm & welcoming. Words cannot describe our stay here. Thank you for your warm welcome. This is the most relaxing & beautiful place to stay. Your suggestions were great. Loved Papa Ole's & the burger place up North. Ola at Turtle Bay was the perfect place for our 15th Anniversary dinner. Loved the swap meet! The mattress is fantastic. Never slept so good. Hawaii is just amazing. It was the best location we ever had. See you next year!

Thank you, thank you for another wonderful week in paradise. We enjoyed our stay every bit as much this time as we did a year ago. It was fun retracing our footsteps and discovering new adventures. We are very sad to leave but bring with us many beautiful memories. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home. Mahalo. Kathy & Grace

A second honeymoon (35 years!) and a family vacation. A beautiful place to refresh, reflect, and re-connect. Thank you for the listing of local sites, beaches, and places to eat. We enjoyed the beaches that we would have never found. The Aloha and Ohana spirit of Jan and Troy set the tone for a wonderful stay. Mahalo nui loa, Gerald, Cecilia, Meghan & Christine

Mahalo for your nice house and hospitality. The ocean was right there. It was wonderful listening to and watching the waves from inside the house or the lanai in such a peaceful location on the North Shore. Thank you for telling us about Laie Point. It had a great view and was so close that we went several times.

Troy and Janice welcomed us warmly and graciously upon our late night arrival. Their advice was wonderful. Troy kindly taught the kids where to fish right off the house. The house is beautiful, very clean and bright. The kitchen, family room, bathroom and master bedroom are excellent. The second bedroom is small, but ok for a couple of kids. The area is definitely the most beautiful on the island, very green and lush. The beach in front of the house was rocky and too rough for swimming when we were there (June), but our kids (ages 13 & 9) loved fishing and walking among the rocks right in front of the house. We loved Pounders Beach, just up the street from the house, which is good for boogie boarding and snorkeling. We also enjoyed the nearby Turtle Bay Resort beach and restaurants. The best snorkeling is very close by in North Beach: Three Tables and Shark's Cove.

The House of the Rising Sun is better than advertised. The house itself is very clean, comfortable and tastefully appointed. The oceanfront setting is just wonderful. The warm, caring hospitality of the hosts, Troy and Janice, is exceptional. The area is not a tourist trap - we felt as though we had stumbled through a time-warp to a less hurried and more genuine Hawaii. We have been to Hawaii several times in many different places, and we found this to be a special treat. Thank you very much. We'll be back.

We have been surrounded by beauty for our stay in your beautiful beach house. Beautiful waves, wind, rain, clouds, moon & stars, sunrises, flowers, green mountains, birds & beautiful smiling people. If beauty can rub off -- we must be perfect "10's" by now. The moon and stars were especially beautiful last night. Mahalo nui loa.

I wanted to meet you the moment I read your email and every correspondence was so informative. Extra special to give my dad a card. Wow you really planned ahead for us. We liked the ocean breeze and sound of the surf, your binder full of resources. Wow you are so thoughful and think of everything. The binoculars, great touch. Don't change a thing. Everything is perfect! Thanks for leaving the sunscreen and providing shampoo. Both of those came in handy. Your welcoming spirit stays with the house, even when you are in Kailua. Also the place is so clean and well maintained.

Thank you so much for sharing your beach home with us for our 40th anniversary! You couldn't have done more to make our celebration special. This is a lovely and relaxing home, we really want to come back. We enjoyed Papa Ole's, Hukilau Cafe and the hamburger place up North. Thank you so much! Hope to see you again before too long. Thank you so much for the warm and informative communication up to and on the day we arrived. The sunrises, full moon, and the sounds of nature were "awesome." We have renamed the beach at Kahana Bay the Michael & Katie Beach for the many wonderful experiences we had there. Thank you (oops) Mahalo.

Troy & Janice you have a gem here! We enjoyed the house and the surroundings. I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful time I had. After a long day of play, coming back to the house felt like home. Bests...John Great price for oceanside location. This part of the coast is our favorite: lots of local flavor! Clean and just the right size. Troy and Janice, thanks for opening your home to us in this wonderful paradise you have here. Few words could fully portray the experience of coming home-literally and figuratively-to Oahu, where my heart and soul will remain until my body can come back and rejoin. Mahalo nui! Barbara
