Chemuyil house description
Casita Paraiso is in the lovely, eclectic community of Chan Chemuyil. This 2 bedroom casita is the affordable and perfect alternative to hotels and resorts. You'll find a laid back feel here and the perfect home base for your adventures and travels around the entire Yucatan peninsula. At the end of the day, enjoy the private garden patio complete with hammock and outdoor kitchen area with BBQ. The surrounding jungle boasts tropical birds and other wildlife and the local cenotes provide cool water to relax and refresh in.
The Mayan Riviera is a diving and fishing paradise and an archaelogical wonder! We are just 5 miles to Akumal, 11 to the pueblo of Tulum and the beautiful white sand beaches of Tulum are just a few miles from town. It is a 10 minute walk to the lovely Playa Xcacel, protected turtle sanctuary. By day enjoy this secluded, white sand crescent beach. By night during turtle nesting season, enjoy learning about the endangered Loggerhead and Giant Green Sea turtles and these grounds they return to nest on year after year. This is a perfect location and underwater paradise for scuba diving and snorkeling as the Meso American Reef system is the 2nd largest in the world next to the Great Barrier Reef. It holds marine turtles, dolphins, 60 species of coral and over 500 species of fish. There are fresh water cenotes that you can swim, snorkel and cave dive in and jungles to explore. So many beautiful beaches on the Caribe and literally hundreds of cenotes in the Yucatan - some simple and some with special features, all to be enjoyed.
The ancient walled city of Tulum treats you to amazing, ancient ruins that overlook the Caribbean sea. Xel-Ha and Yal Ku are two amazing lagoons that should be visited - kids (of all ages) will especially love these amazing natural water parks. Ancient Mayan ruins abound from Chichen Itza to newly uncovered ruins at Ek Balam. Explore the history of the area and its indigenous people who still thrive and live in Quintana Roo. Visit the neighboring pueblo of Chemuyil and enjoy mingling with the Mayan people - tasting their fresh, traditional cuisine in local restaurants, bakeries and fruit stands. For a totally unique experience, visit The Jungle Place just down the jungle road a few miles and play with rescued spider monkeys and then stop at Xhunaan Ha cenote to swim, jump or dive off the plank and cool off. This cenote is part of a huge underground river system that connects to 2 other lovely cenotes in the neighborhood. If you want a bit more city action, Playa del Carmen is just 30 minutes away. Shop along the famous Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) and enjoy local cuisine at the many great restaurants. Visit the culturally themed water park of Xcaret and X'Plor that has zip lines running across the jungle along the lagoon the pours into the Caribbean.
Come enjoy the tranquility of paradise, immerse yourself into a vibrant and ancient culture and feel the warmth of the Caribbean sand and sea at your feet! Whatever you decide to do, you'll love it!

We spent 10 days here at spring break with another couple and had a fabulous time. Casita Paraiso was clean, spacious, cozy, comfortable and perfect! We stocked up on groceries before arriving so we could enjoy breakfast in the private backyard patio every morning. We even cooked dinner on the barbecue twice after a successful fishing trip in nearby Akumal! We appreciated the small but well equipped kitchen and used most of the beach gear that were provided at Casita Paraiso. We loved having a car as it was so easy to transport everything and set up for the day. FYI, there is a small charge to access the beach ($1 per person) and a security monitored parking lot. The beach was fantastic! The wind and pretty big waves made swimming sometimes difficult (probably just the time of year) but the beach was beautiful and peaceful. The cenote just off the beach is definitely worth a visit but wear flip-flops to get there. Not too crowded, no loud bars and restaurants and no one trying to sell you anything. We also regularly used the two bicycles provided - they could use a bit of a tune-up but did the trick! Almost every morning used them to explore the surrounding areas and charming town of Chemuyil. We also went into town on several occasions for dinner and had some of our best meals there, even better than the very expensive dinner we had in Playa del Carmen. Our favourite restaurant was La Palapa - good food, inexpensive and Valentino was a delight to meet and made us feel like old friends. The grilled chicken available in several places for lunch is also a great deal. Our experience in Chemuyil was everything we hoped for but there are a couple of things that others might want to consider before choosing this location. We recommend renting a car in advance as it certainly made getting to the beach and exploring the surrounding areas much more convenient. If you are ready for a more genuine adventure in the Mayan Riviera, Casita Paraiso is a great, comfortable option. However, if you like the luxuries of all-inclusive resorts and expect immaculate conditions and long, warm, high pressure showers, this may not be for you! Although it was Spring Break and very crowded elsewhere, we managed to escape it all at this beach and charming town of Chemuyil, right in the heart of the Riviera. We will definitely be back and would recommend Casita Paraiso to anyone who is willing to get off the beaten path a little and have a more authentic experience in Mexico!

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review! And for providing some great tips. We are so pleased that Casita Paraiso met your expectations and that you enjoyed your time in the Riviera Maya with all of it's amazing adventures, big and small. Xcacel never disappoints with it raw beauty. I hope you'll get to come back and experience it on a calm day, floating in the Caribbean with your eyes closed as if daydreaming in a giant bath. We look forward to having you as guests again!
We stayed here with our brother and sister-in-law in February and found this casita very comfortable and very well situated. We loved exploring the nearby towns and villages and made a day trip to the ruins at Coba. The nearby beach is one of the prettiest and most intimate we've seen and a short, easy walk. One of our beach days was very windy and the water too rough to go in but that caused us to explore the nearby cenote where we had the best fresh water swim ever, all within a short walk from the Gulf. We even had a Green heron "hiding" under the overhanging branches.

Owner response: We're happy that you enjoyed your stay so much. Thank you for mentioning the beach cenote at Xcacel. Even though it's a short distance from the white sandy shores, it's tucked into the jungle and can be easy to overlook. This beautiful natural sinkhole is a great place to swim, float and even snorkel. The water in these beautiful gems is very cool which makes them the perfect place to cool off on very hot days, or as you did on a windy day. We hope you'll visit again for more exploring.
Not for the off-season
Not for the off-season
Despite the fact that this lovely small casita is well-supplied and obviously well-loved by its owner, our 2-week June vacation was very nearly a disaster. We are not novices; we have rented over 20 houses in Mexico, in all seasons. However, we did not understand the breeze-less, carved-from-the-jungle location of this casita. Mosquitoes confined us to the dark interior whenever we were at home. The beautiful beach is indeed only a 10-15 min. walk away, but that walk is along a jungle road and requires sprinting across the incredibly busy 4-lane Cancun/Tulum highway - while lugging all your beach gear. We had the impression we could do without a car, but ended up renting when the arranged van wasn't at the airport. Ultimately, we were very grateful to have the car, because our toddler grandson couldn't manage the bugs or the required trekking; however, it was an unexpected $900 expense. We rather quickly decided, before we did serious bodily harm to each other, that we needed to move closer to the beach, and did so after only 3 days. Under the circumstances we were very disappointed that the owner declined any refund, though of course that is her right. She did offer some free nights for a future stay, but we will not be taking her up on that.

Owner response: I’m very sorry your plans didn't work out and Casita Paraiso was not a good fit for you. The casa is described as “gently tucked between sprawling, dense jungle scattered with cenotes”. Also, to reach the beach on foot you must “carefully cross the highway”. Generally during the off season, this is fairly easy to do. Having a rental car allows you to easily transport all of the great beach gear we provide. Most car rentals average $300 per week and we highly recommend it for families traveling with small children. We recently spent 2 weeks there, and the tropical storms did make for more indoor time with the A/C and ceiling fans to keep us cool. We have lovely lightblocking curtains in each room that allow you to sleep in or take a siesta, and by day you can pull them open to a light, and warm interior. Much of the year you will enjoy a wonderful breeze blowing through the opened jalousie windows, and some very enjoyable patio time. Unfortunately, the weather you experienced at the time of your visit is fairly typical and there can be some windless days along with lots of pesky mosquitos. If you're up for it, you can light the Tiki torches and candles with citronella, apply insect repellent, have a drink and relax listening to the sounds of tropical birds in the surrrounding jungle. Perhaps the off season is best for hearty travelers who are willing to brave the elements in exchange for lower rates and special treats like turtle nesting, the best fishing season and just a day trip away to flamingos and whale sharks.
Thank you! My wife and I enjoyed a perfect ten day staying at Casita Paraiso. We loved that we were located right between Akumal and Tulum, but we loved the charm of our little village of Chemuyil. In fact, our favorite place (and cheapest) to eat ended up being Maria's little taco stand right in town. We both got our scuba certification, and when done enjoying the amazing underwater world for the day, we were always excited to go back to "our home." We also discovered Pedro, a kind local driver in Chemuyil, who took us to Coba one day and on a cenote tour on another day - all for extremely fair prices. In all, it was a perfect vacation we'll never forget. Thanks for opening your home to us! Looking forward to coming back soon.

Owner response: We're happy that you enjoyed your stay so much. Sounds like you've been 'bitten by the bug'! We love that you feel so much pleasure from Casita Paraiso and the local Maya community that you call it your home. Congratulations on your scuba certification! The Mexican Caribbean is the perfect place to learn and enjoy the underwater sea-world. Thanks for the tip on Pedro, the cab driver in Chemuyil - we often spend our long visits using public transportation, collectivos and cabs and it will be nice to have a favorite cabbie to count on. We look forward to your return visit!
Perfect house on the perfect Mexican beach.

We are a family of four (two kids 15 and 13) and this was our first trip to the Mayan Riviera as a family. My husband and I had been there many moons ago back when we had no kids to an all Inclusive hotel. I can gladly say this experience was a wonderful and refreshing departure from the all Inclusive one. We had the best of times. Casita Paraiso was everything we expected and more! It had everything we needed to make our ten day stay perfect. The location cannot be better. Xcacel beach is heaven on earth. Yes! And it's only ten minutes away (walking) and three by car (yes we timed it). My son (13) enjoyed the days at the beach boogie boarding while we snorkeled the reef. The water is clear and the temperature is perfect. At night we would grill in the outside gas grill or we would just go to Chemuyil for some ceviche or pizza. The location of the casita is another great thing. We drove ten minutes to the north and swam with the turtles in Akumal Bay or fifteen minutes south and had lunch in a calm beach in Tulum. We went to a number of restaurants recommended by Kathy in a folder we found in the casita and they were great places. We also made a couple of trips she mentioned there, as the Muyil and Ek Balam ruins. Both were perfect. I could honestly go on and on about this trip and the casita but it would not be enough. You just have try it yourselves! We'll be coming back, no doubt about it!

Owner response: Thank you, Barbara, for taking time to write this review. We are so pleased that Casita Paraiso exceeded your expectations. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your family vacation in the Riviera Maya so much! I'm happy you found the guest binder was helpful, too. Isn't Xcacel the most incredible beach?! It's our favorite place to spend a totally relaxing day. A cool fact about Xcacel - J'Lo filmed part of a beautiful music video there last year and the rest at Chichen Itza! There really are endless opportunities for fun in the Yucatan. We look forward to having you back as our guests!
Perfect for Us!
Perfect for Us!
We are a family of four, our kids are 10 and 12 and this was our second trip to Chemuyil, but our first time staying at Casita Paraiso. We go on a one week trip every year at this time and it has certain requirements. It has to fit our budget and we go to experience the culture, basically, living like the locals. We chose Casita Paraiso as it appealed to the things we appreciate. It has a great outside dining table and chairs where we had every meal. Each morning we would have fresh mangoes with local honey and limes . You can get them in the nearby village of Chemuyil at a street stand where you can also get local organic ,peppers, avocados, potatoes to name a few. Sometimes a mango truck came by the house. The kitchen is organized and well equipped, outside is a charcoal and electric barbecue where we grilled fresh local chicken. George my husband found the local butcher in the village where he was gifted these great array of smoked meats. Casa Paraiso has Internet which is important to us as we our free lance artists and need to be aware of incoming jobs. Internet is hard to come by in Mexico so this was a luxury for us. There are two bikes available which we used to run errands in he village like get fresh pastries from the bakery. We did not rent a car but used the bikes and local collectivos for our mode of transportation which was just fine. Everyday we would pack a picnic and cold beers and head for one of the most beautiful beaches, Xcacel, find shade under the trees and spend the day snorkeling, playing in the waves or swimming in the hidden cenote. We would leave the beach when it closed and head back to Paraiso for a cocktail. Sometimes we would head into Chemuyil for some local food. There was a small no named outside cafe with red table and chairs, the owner would let us bring our own beer. We had Enchiladas, to die for, Guacamole, Burritos and Nachos all for around $20. We would head back to Paraiso and crash on the most comfortable pillow top beds, thank you for that Kathleen and Mark, we slept like babies. Finally, I am a graphic artist and design mainly beach towels. When Kathleen found this out she asked if I would do a mural. Well if you go to stay at Casa Paraiso you will see a very happy Sea Turtle on the back wall of her patio. Thank you Kathleen and Mark, your home gave us a week that we will never forget. Until next year. Katy, George, Arthur and Rosie.

Owner response: Katy, George, Arthur and Rosie – so happy to have you as our guests at Casita Paraiso! We’re thrilled that your family had such a wonderful time and experienced all of the local culture that surrounds you. Your vacation sounds very much the way we like to enjoy our time when we’re there. There’s so much to do & enjoy in the immediate area and I appreciate you sharing that in this review. It’s awesome that you felt so at ease with the local transportation (the bicycles and the colectivos) as great alternatives to renting a car. Isn’t Xcacel an incredible beach?! So many great beaches around, but this place is very special to us and to all of our neighbors. We are very happy to provide comfort & convenience for our guests as we know what we look for when staying at other vacation homes. We especially want to thank you for the lovely mural that now adorns our patio wall. We look forward to having you back next year!

My sister and I stayed at Casita Paraiso for 8 days at the end of May. It's taken me this long to comment, but I just wanted to say what a wonderful place you have and to thank you, Kathy and Mark for sharing your wonderful hospitality and home. We had a magical week. It was amazing and we both vowed to come back. You have a lovely, calm oasis there. It really made our stay. The neighborhood is lovely and the little cenote there is really cool. It was also totally walkable to the main town of Chemuyil and the beach - which was great. Your property manager Michelle, was extremely helpful and kind too! What a great community it seems to be. Anyway, we had a wonderful time - my tan is fading faster than my memories. Can't wait to return.

We had a really nice time at Casita Paraiso, the property was very clean and well presented, with all the amenities required and some nice extra's. The local area was nice and the beach just a short walk away. If you want to be away from the resorts and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet we would definitely recommend staying here.

Why the Owner Chose Chemuyil:
We've traveled to many beautiful areas of Mexico, but the water here is the most beautiful! It's so amazing with it's transparent turquoise hue and the abundant sea life that makes for incredible snorkeling and scuba diving. We've enjoyed exploring the many ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, Tulum, Coba and Xel-Ha just to name a few. We love the culture, the people, everything about this special place! This community is so unique and colorful with many wonderful neighbors from all over the U.S. and Canada as well as from Italy, Austria and England. The neighboring pueblo is also full of beautiful and friendly local families, mostly of Mayan descent. There's so many more adventures in store for us that we could spend the rest of our lives here and not see it all.....but we are sure going to have fun trying!
