My favourite part of Europe was Le Marais, Paris
My favourite part of Europe was Le Marais, Paris
I stayed at this lovely apartment twice last year in November for 1 week and then in December for 5 days. The location was just perfect for transport (Bastille Metro has three lines which are convenient for all the attractions). There were plenty of supermarkets in either direction (I love Monoprix). Of course Le Marais is a beautiful quarter with lovely art galleries (I went in NOoember during the Mois de la Photo so I saw heaps of great photography), boutiques and restaurants which are open on Sundays. There were 3 vegan restaurants nearby and the Merci Department store at 111 Blvd Beaumarchais is so much more stylish and has a more wonderful edit of products compared with than Galeries Lafayette which is so gaudy. The Richard Lenoir Markets were so colourful and lively. I was able to cook whenever I felt like it as Ruth provided a chopping board, plenty of cutlery and crockery. The hotplate worked really well and made cooking so quick. The bathroom has a heated towel rack which is great for drying your smalls. The bed was comfy and even the books provided enhanced my stay: I read Hemingway before exploring the Left Bank and visited some literary highlights (Shakespeare and Co, Gertrude Stein's residence). Thanks to Ruth for all your assistance (calling a taxi; giving useful addresses; providing helpful information) my stay was perfect and I would love to come back in the Spring!

I spent three blissful weeks in this studio, and the location could not be better. The metro is steps away, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, boulangeries etc close by. The twice weekly Richard Lenoir Markets are just across the road, but I was disappointed that I couldn't buy as much here as I would have liked, because the kitchenette is not practical for cooking anything more than a cup of tea, and perhaps a sandwich. The bathroom is good, and I liked the fact that although this is a tiny studio apartment, the bed is somewhat private, tucked away in it's little alcove. Having a washing machine was also a great plus. I was disappointed in the lack of kitchen facilties - there is simply no space to prepare anything. Also frustrating was the fact that the phone did not work for the entire three weeks I was there. I would also suggest to the owners that leaving a list of instructions for things like accessing the internet connection, operating the television etc would be useful for guests. The owners were very pleasant to deal with, and if the kitchen and telephone problems were rectified, I would stay here again.

When I rang up the owner to inquire about the noise level, I was told there might be 'work in the street' from 9 - 5 during the week I'd be there, but if so, she would deduct 20% from the rent. Upon arrival, we were surprised to see that scaffolding and thick plastic covered the entire facade of the building. Entering the narrow, dingy corridor we noticed graffiti on the three ground-floor doors. The stairs were dusty, steep and narrow (note 'handicap accessible may have limitations'), the carpet tatty, peeling paint. The courtyard was filled with scaffolding as well. Once inside the minuscule flat, at 2 p.m.the 'curtains' had been drawn. So that one might not notice straight away that in fact the plastic covering prevented one from seeing the street? The workers who arrived on Monday morning were not working 'in the street',as the owner had said they would be, but rather, it would seem, restoring the facade. Note the comment in her 'profile,' stating 'you can open your windows any time'. On Thursday morning, one of the workers who was to restore the sills of our flat finally had to fetch a special tool in order to open one of the windows. Once opened, fine grey dust generated by the work being done blew in from outside covering everything, including bags and clothes (the latter suspended on a shop rack, no, there's no closet!). We had to go out by then, but the owner sent someone round later to hoover; WE, however, had to clean the bags. As for our clothes, well once back home, they had to be sent to the cleaners' (and not at the owner's expense you can be sure.) The first photo you see of this 'beautiful apartment' is certainly not of the flat as it is at present; there is no 'full kitchen,' no stove, no oven, just a hotplate (but then there is absolutely no space actually to prepare food), no stereo system, no DVD, no video games, no video library, no music library, no CD player, no 'dry hair,' as claimed; not even a bread knife and a cutting board for your baguettes..And how could one even conceive of making a steak as there is no hood? There was, however, a filthy kettle, two dirty cups and glasses (note that the flat 'sleeps four') which had to be washed before being used. The owner, with whom I communicated by phone and emails, (her daughter let us in and her husband collected the key at the end) was 'sorry for the inconvenience,' (even left me a catalogue for an art exhibit), but not one word was uttered concerning the falsities posted here.
