Welcome to Twin Maple Farm. Continuously Farmed since 1801 and besides our road being paved about 15 years ago, the views have not changed much since then. Not another house in sight. Look out the window and watch the herd of beautiful Brown Swiss cows grazing on our Organic pastures while having your cup of coffee or tea. Enjoy a campfire in the backyard and see the stars with clarity as there is no light pollution within miles from the farm.
We regularly spot turkeys, deer, fox, turtles, frogs, red tailed hawks, rabbits, and an occasional bobcat, bald eagle, and mink. Enjoy a picnic in our top pasture enjoying views of the farm which take up the entire valley as well as the entire Catskill range in the distance. The Farmhouse was completely restored and has all of its original details such as Pumpkin Pine flooring and a front door key that weighs more than most modern locks. The wood burning stove fills the air with wonderful smells as well as warms you up (we have central heating too, not to worry)
The area is full of charming and wonderful destinations. It is a foodie paradise as the Hudson Valley has over 4000 farms, mostly small and family owned as well as many food artisans. The new winery in our town is making some of the best wine in New York State. Pick your own orchards are all around us as well as a new micro distillery making some fine vodka and brandies from their own orchards. Micro breweries, cheese makers, Picklers, bakers, and growers also dot the landscape. Scarecrow Farm is a great find for fresh eggs and pickled veggies. The chickens scatter about as you pull into the farm so you know where the eggs came from. Hudson holds some incredible restaurants which we have just more recently discovered.
Hawthorne Valley Farm is just over the hill and they have an incredible store chock full of local products and many products produced right on their farm. Roast a locally raised heritage breed chicken in our large crueset pot. Check out Rogers Book Barn and head to Chatham for a $5 movie in a time encapsulated movie theatre. You can also grab a good latte in Chatham at two different coffee shops and one of the best independent book stores in the State also resides on Main Street. Local 111 in Philmont is just down the road and has a menu comprised of the regions bounty. Berkshire Pottery makes lovely pottery, made from their clay, fired on the property, painted by family members and sold in the old barn store.
Columbia County is also loaded with Waterfalls. The Tallest waterfall is just 5 minutes away and managed by the Columbia Land Conservancy. It is a beautiful short hike with a rewarding view at the top of the trail. Bash Bish Falls is more dramatic and a 'must see'. The Rail Trail also is a great bike ride. There are also many gilded age mansions worth taking a drive to see, be it the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Astors, Roosevelts, Livingstons, or Mills families. Many of those families still keep homes along the Hudson River. Frederick Church's Persian Castle is also a must see and only 15 minutes away.
Many barons of the gilded age had homes on 5th avenue, Newport Rhode Island, Palm Beach and the Hudson Valley and many are now open for tours. If you want a bucolic, working countryside experience, Columbia County is the place and our farm is a great base to enjoy it all from. Columbia County is the least populated county in the entire NYC, Albany, Boston Triangle so a 2.5 hour drive from NY or Boston will transport you to a rural Currier and Ives setting.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: My wife, son and I recently moved from Brooklyn to New Jersey and head to the farm as often as we can. My son loves the farm and catching frogs and butterflies and picking apples and pears. The farm is where we go to decompress and enjoy nature and privacy.
Why the Owner Chose Ghent:
I attended private school in the area as a child and always loved the nature and way of life.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
I am in wine import business and enjoy lots of trips to Tuscany, Bordeaux and Napa/Sonoma Valleys and the Hudson Valley also is a great Gastroenomic region with fresh everything during the growing season and beautiful scenery. Since I cannot relocate my family to Tuscany, I can capture and emulate a little of Tuscany in the Hudson Valley.
