Location: Fairbanks, Alaska, USA (10 Minutes from Town and 5 Minutes to the Univ. of Alaska.)
Accommodations: Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s) (Sleeps 4-6)
This is a destination for the eco-tourist traveler. Living is back to basics (no running water). Enough water is provided for cooking and hand washing.
I built this home on land adjacent to the north end of the Creamer's Field Waterfowl Refuge (10 minutes from downtown Fairbanks, Alaska). The refuge is a mix of birch and spruce forest (northern boreal) and wetlands with nearby small lakes (think waterfowl, mosquitoes and boots). In the winter the refuge is a wonderland for cross-country skiing and aurora watching.
A photograph of this solar home was featured in a museum exhibit about housing in Fairbanks (March 2009 University of Alaska Museum of the North). The local newspaper, The Fairbanks Daily-News Miner, carried a story with photos (September 12, 2009) under the headline "Sun harvest: A solar home is built in Fairbanks."

The walls are super-insulated and 14-inches thick (hey, this is the Arctic). IMPORTANT NOTE: No running water. This is a 'dry' cabin which means water is provided in 5-gallon containers for cooking, dish washing and hand washing. The indoor bathroom has a composting toilet which is convenient (and odorless) but again, sorry no shower. Showers are available at nearby indoor public swimming pools for a nominal fee.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2009
I tell folks I moved to Alaska in 1976 looking for opportunity and adventure. I found both and love it here! I've worked as a professional photographer, writer, editor, magazine publisher and multimedia designer (educational CDs and DVDs). I build cabins, too. I currently work at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (Education Outreach Science and Math). I consider myself to be a conservationist and environmentalist. Clearly the idea of a super-insulated, solar home makes sense. The solar home produces 30 KW hours on a June sunny day and that's more than the average home in America uses. In the past 30 years I've built 12 cabins in the Fairbanks area. Most are rentals for university students. I have one remote cabin that's located just north of the Alaska mountain Range. It's ten miles off the road system and three miles to my nearest neighbor. Sorry, this remote cabin is not for rent: it's my getaway.
Why the Owner Chose Fairbanks
I purchased the raw land because of its location next to the Creamer's Field Waterfowl Refuge. The cabins took a year and a half to build.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
Benefits include opportunity for solitude, privacy, and nearness to nature.
