Hale Kakahi is your vision of the ultimate Hawaiian retreat. In Hawaiian, it means “unique, outstanding, one-of-a-kind house,” a perfect name for this oceanfront estate. We own Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals, a popular Hawaii vacation rental service, and all our experience delighting visitors for 20 years went into making Hale Kakahi an experience you will never forget!
Entering the Hale Kakahi grounds, you travel down a long drive surrounded by plumeria, monkeypod, banana, and palm trees until you reach the elegant two-story home. The front door opens to the foyer and Great Room, where you are overwhelmed by the spectacular ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows and across a broad lanai that extends across the entire front of the house. The interior is a wood-lover’s dream, with floors, walls, ceilings, counters and cabinets built from nine exotic woods including koa, mango, Spanish cedar and purple heart.
Besides the great view, the Great Room offers a comfortable place to visit and relax, with good reading lights and a TV/DVD for evening entertainment. For meals, you’ll find a gourmet kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and other premium appliances including two convection ovens. The cooktop/breakfast bar countertop is made from a single gorgeous piece of monkeypod wood. You’ll eat many meals on the lanai, but for indoor dining the travertine marble table in the dining area seats six.
A small office off the Great Room (with telephone, high-speed Internet, and of course more great views) leads to the air-conditioned master bedroom. With a room like this, you won’t want to get out of bed! The bed is a California king with a high-quality pillow-top mattress, and the room also has its own TV, DVD player, and sound system. The bedroom has an en suite bath with a walk-in shower, Jacuzzi bathtub/spa, and double vanity. An estate wouldn’t be complete without a pool and the 30-foot lap pool is just outside the master bedroom.
But wait, there’s more! That was just the upper level! Two oceanfront suites on the lower level provide accommodations for up to four more guests. The Akahi Suite consists of a bedroom, sitting room, and private bath. The bedroom has a firm king bed. The sitting room is equipped with conveniences including a TV, radio/CD, coffee-maker, mini-refrigerator and microwave. Both rooms have ocean views and the full bath has a tub shower. The smaller Elua Suite has the same great ocean view as the Akahi Suite, with a queen bed and a full bath with stall shower. Guests in the Akahi and Elua Suites can enjoy their morning coffee on the private lower-level lanai.
The nearly 3-acre Hale Kakahi estate includes a diverse mix of lush vegetation, manicured lawns, exotic fruit trees, koi ponds, fountains, palm trees, magnificent lava oceanfront — even a 50-yard golf tee and green! In season, whales pass by and play in the surf just offshore. The estate is near the quiet residential area of Hawaiian Beaches, which is great for walking. The town of Pahoa with several restaurants and interesting shops is less than 15 minutes by car. Hilo is about a 30-minute drive, and Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away.
We know that where you stay is important, and we know the only surprises you want are pleasant ones. Hale Kakahi was our home and it is a truly extraordinary place. We hope you will be our guest very soon!

Enjoying the Great Room and Fireplace
VRBO Bear stayed here - 05/13/2009
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by music playing on the stereo and a welcoming tropical fruit arrangement in the kitchen, compliments of our wonderful hosts, Sharene and Harrison Klein. Everything was well maintained- from the woodwork inside to the wrap-around lanai and koi pond outside.
The Great Room was made up of several varieties of woods, which made this bear feel right at home. The middle of the Great Room featured a huge fireplace, which, along with the rest of the house was truly a work-of-art. The kitchen was large and well-equipped. It had a beautiful wood-topped island and all the appliances a hungry bear needed in order to prepare meals. The master bedroom was large and inviting, with a comfy king size bed that was not too hard, not too soft, but just right! If you need to do some work or check your e-mail while staying at “Hale Kakahi,” there 's a small office conveniently located right off the master bedroom. I used the high speed Internet connection to stay in touch with my Bear family and friends back on the Mainland.
I highly recommend 'Hale Kakahi" for a tropical getaway. The house is a showplace for woodwork and the grounds are immaculately landscaped. This home is truly a trip to “paradise.”

Why the Owner Chose Hilo
The Hilo side of the Big Island is a special place. It has spectacular natural beauty and communities with people who actually live here! We don’t have white sand beaches or fancy resorts (they’re all on the Kona side), but we do have tropical rainforested valleys carved out of tall mountains, along with waterfalls, exotic gardens, rugged lava coastlines, and of course an active volcano. Hilo Town itself is a charming city with a distinctive Hawaiian flavor not found anywhere else in the islands. Hilo has both a 4-year university and a community college, and it’s the headquarters for many of the observatories on Mauna Kea, so we have an active intellectual and cultural community. It also has some of the most affordable real estate in Hawaii, whether you’re buying or renting. So whether you’re looking for a wonderful place for a holiday or looking to make a move to our beautiful islands, Hale Kakahi is a great place to spend some time!
Owner's Map of Hilo
The story of our life together is the story of our love for Hawaii. Each of us fell in love with Hawaii on our first visits over 20 years ago. We started making one or two trips a year, traveling extensively throughout the islands. With some planning and some luck, we both developed business interests in Hawaii, which brought us to the islands even more often. Our mutual love for Hawaii played a major part in our own relationship. When we decided to get married, we knew it had to be in Hawaii, and we were married on the lanai of a beautiful home in Kona on the Big Island overlooking the Pacific. We kept exploring each island and discovering new things to do and new places to stay. After years of planning (and saving), we purchased a beautiful condo on Maui, Kihei Akahi D-614 (VRBO #11109), as our first vacation rental. As we were looking for another vacation rental condo, we discovered our dream Hawaiian hale (house) in Puna on the Big Island. The house and grounds were so extraordinary that the Hawaiian word kakahi — unique, outstanding — seemed the only fitting name, so the house became Hale Kakahi. It took us awhile, but in Spring 2001 we left our California jobs, packed our possessions, and moved to Hale Kakahi full time. We continued to have fun filling up D-614 with travelers coming to Hawaii. We eventually met other Maui condominium owners, as well as owners of vacation rentals near us on the Big Island, and a natural reservation and referral business was born, Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals. Eventually we moved from Hale Kakahi and it, too, is now a wonderful vacation rental. We like to think our move to Hawaii proves that sometimes dreams really can come true. We wake each day thankful to live in such a beautiful place, and we try never to take it for granted.
