We totally enjoyed our stay in cozy, comfortable Eleanor House. We liked the openness of the house and a thunderstorm enjoyed through the skylights was quite exciting. The home is complete with everything you need to make your stay enjoyable, including Meadow, who is truly delightful. The grounds are spacious and you can enjoy nature from either of the back decks. The front porch has it's own attraction in a wonderful lily/frog pond. The yard is complete with various beautiful vegetation and a new fire ring for a nice evening bonfire. It is a short drive to go to many different attractions; our favorite being the Storm King Art Center. In all, a beautiful green environment for your enjoyment. Meadow filled vases with flowers from her garden and put them around on the tables. We thank her for her hospitality and sharing her home with us.Did you find this review helpful? We spent approximately a week at Eleanor House (in December), and had some very good experiences, as well as a few issues that need mentioning. If you are intrigued by the ad, then it is probably worth a try, and hopefully this review will be helpful. Pros: -As stated in the ad, the house, amenities, grounds, and activity options – an open canvas for a fine time -Overall helpful and amiable host Cons: Nondisclosure of various facts that would impact one’s decision to rent, and affect the quality of stay: -Strong sulfur smell and taste of water (“hard boiled eggs”) in the house. The filter took some, but not nearly all, of it out, and it was somewhat unpleasant. There’s an explanatory note posted on the wall (stating what it is and that it’s safe), but it was a very strong presence and should somehow be disclosed, if not in the ad, then in an email or phone discussion prior to the visit. (There are said to be some potential health benefits to hydrogen sulfide gas in water, but again, it can impact the quality of a visit.) -After arriving we learned that there’s a history of mice in the house. After a few days, we saw droppings on the kitchen counter, and chewing through food bags and into bread. An express warning to keep food in chew-proof containers would have been appreciated (not all country houses have active mice). - The owner offered to cook certain items for a holiday meal. She ended up bringing extra items of her own volition, which we thought was nice. We invited her to dinner, and afterward she helped herself to leftovers. And, at the end of our stay, we were presented with a bill for the items that we did not request, discuss, or agree to pay for. (This made for a confusing and awkward situation, and took something away from the spirit of contribution and appreciation.) There are a few other bits that could be discussed, but I will leave it at that. When I got home, I went over the paperwork and reflected on the experience, and emailed the owner. I did not hear back, which was disappointing. I wish there were not a dent in this special time we shared and enjoyed. I will hold on to the positives, and learn from the negatives. This is not to dissuade any one from visiting, and as earlier mentioned, if you are intrigued by the ad then it is worth a try and you may well enjoy it all. After all was said and done, I felt compelled to write this review so others can make an informed choice. Wishing both renters and owners the best. 3.5Did you find this review helpful? I took my boyfriend to Eleanor House for his birthday getaway. We planned on doing nothing but relaxing, cooking, eating and sleeping, and I'm happy to report we stuck to our plan. Eleanor House is a wonderful retreat for anyone looking to get away from it all; its stress-free energy is contagious. Meadow is a kind and gracious host, and the house itself is open and inviting: a free-standing, wood-buring stove kept us warm as the temperatures dropped, a chef's (and certified commercial) kitchen had the house smelling like home-cooking all weekend, and the southern exposure literally blanketed the interior with sunlight every afternoon. The magic for me, though, happened when the sun went down. The quiet of the surroundings really makes you feel as if you're all alone on the property, and the dark begs you to cuddle up on the couch by the fire. We kept the lights dim, talked, napped, drank wine, read and relaxed. We spent two days entirely inside (save some trips to the back deck to watch the sunrise, or the deer) and on our last full day there, drove to New Paltz for brunch at Main Street Bistro (go!) and coffee at Mudd Puddle (go there, too). Just 20 minutes away (on a wonderfully scenic drive), New Paltz has so much to offer; you can hike the Gunks, go to Mohonk Mountain House, shop, and visit wineries and local farms. It's an area my boyfriend and I have been to many times to explore; we're so happy we found such a great launching pad (or, if you like to stay in like us, lily pad) at Eleanor House. Thank you, Meadow, for sharing it with us.Owner response: Rebuttal Review #4867234 Aug, Client J booked Christmas Holiday week Dec 22-29 at Eleanor House (EH) with her large dog. We agreed on rates & slight cleaning increase for more people & dog. She paid half, balance due on arrival. Her paperwork listed 4 adults + extra people for Christmas dinner. I agreed. Later she asked me to find a cook for a large turkey. I assumed she’d pay for this. I volunteered to cook & assist with dinner but only organic meat. She agreed. Week prior Clients asked to come day earlier. I agreed. When clients arrived Dec 21st I was upset. They opened their car door & intense cigarette smell streamed out. My web sites clearly state no smokers – they must go off my property, since I’m allergic. I was not sure Client S would comply with this restriction with the health issues. It is very rural here, 35 minutes to any hospital. Concerned, I called a friend in the fire & ambulance core & asked advice. He said allow smoking just outside instead of walking up hill to road. Client S complied & came outside quite frequently, in cold weather smoked in their car in front. Christmas Eve I went over menus & ingredients with clients. They were thrilled. I cooked their turkey 8 hrs, using utilities & kitchen 12 hrs. On Christmas 2 kitchens used, charged only $117 food cost. After Clients complaints, I got quotes; Home & Hearth, Kingston, 3 X food cost + delivery $403; Jack’s Meats, New Paltz, just cooking turkey, organic $160, non-organic $125. True, there’s sulfide gas in the water, some clients simply buy bottled drinking water. The Gunks have naturally accruing hydrogen sulfide gas in the bed rock; it’s extremely healthy for hair & skin. It’s the exact substance people pay hundreds for to soak in at hot springs. Odd, Client J so disturbed with natural sulfide smell but OK with chain smoking. Ah yes, country mice. We’re in woods, end of a country road; I did mention it on their arrival. Upset came when I presented their bill, unpaid balance + ex day ($50 off normal rate) + food $117, total extras $242; small amount for my hard work making fantastic holiday dinner for12-13 & no charge for my kitchen & equipment. Yes I joined them, at their request. Went to clean EH, was horrified, dog hair everywhere, big black spots on living room rug required $36 cleaning, bathrooms disgusting. Cleaned 11 hours, did 8 laundry loads. As far as I’m concerned I’m owed an apology. Owner: Eleanor House

First off, there's Meadow, whose warmth and hospitality are unsurpassed. And then there's this place with sun roofs in the two bedrooms, comfortable in every room. For my wife and me, it was love at first sight. My wife and I took our dog Lola and she had a blast. My daughter and son-in-law came up for a couple of days and they never experienced such beauty -- they had a blast; and then my cousin came up for an overnight (and we went golfing in a nearby town and he said the same thing). There are the ponds with the frogs, the kitchen which the photo doesn't do justice to (in fact, none of the photos give you the scope of the rooms). While there we went to a winery which we loved. I cook, and we had everything we needed, with a fully stocked supermarket that has a lot of organic fruits and vegetables whose name escapes me. When we came home (which we didn't want to do), we realized a couple of things were left there, and Meadow shipped them to us right away. We would recommend this place for a family with a pet, a couple, any kind of group up to 6 or so. Coming from NYC, we have a refrain in our apartment in Queens and it comes up every couple of days or so: "So let's drop everything and head up to Meadow in Pine Bush".Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: What a lovely review... thanks. I have always believed in something my Dad taught me years ago... "treat your family like guests and your guests like family!" It seems to have been a wise statement that I continue to follow. Meadow

if you have to figure out a short (or long), close to NYC, inexpensive , romantic vacation - look no farther than Meadow's vacation rental. We went in December and couldn't take advantage of the beautiful and bucolic environment- instead- we enjoyed the wood burning oven, the jacuzzi, took long scenic drives. Meadow was exceptionally helpful and if you have a question about what to do/ where to do it just ask. She'll give you answers with directions to boot!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: As an artist and Innkeeper, I love sharing my knowledge of the Hudson Valley with the tenants "Eleanor House at Woodrock" attracts. Most of the time they are educated, conscious, fun loving people, wanting to take a break and discover what this area of the country has to offer. The fact that we are so close to NYC (1 ½ hours) is a well kept secret. Whether its rock climbing, hiking or antiquing… this place is creativity central, an artist haven, and you could explore a different venue every day for a year and still not catch up with everything the HV has to offer. Fortunately Eleanor House at Woodrock is well located and one can easily access the cities and parks all around us, New Paltz, Gardiner, Kingston, Woodstock, Newburgh, Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Pine Bush, Ellenville, just to name a few! Come stay with us… we would love to accommodate your vacation dreams.

We held my girlfriend's low key bachelorette party here a few weekends ago. We LOVED this house-- it's so unique and comfortable. Meadow (the owner) is so accommodating and made our trip really special. She was so easy to work with. We visited the wineries in the area and could not have had a better time!! The house was spacious, beautifully decorated and in a serene, relaxing environment. You'd be crazy not to rent this house!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My Husband and I rented Eleanor House for My 34th birthday. We were very happy to be able to bring our dog (2y\o Doberman). The owner, Meadow treated us like longtime friends. She was always willing to provide help ex: directions, restaurant recommendations, and local area info. She even cast our dog's paws in her ceramic studio. This house is very private, spacious, and clean. There are all the amenities you need towels, extra linens, full kitchen, even laundry room. We enjoyed the fireplaces, soaking in the jacuzzi overlooking the wilderness, and just watching our dog run in the fenced yard. There is plenty to do in the area. You can hike in the Gunks, go walking around New Paltz, or go wine tasting. Can't wait to return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Eleanor House at Woodrock. The location is excellent and we found the peace and tranquility we were looking for, while being close to New Paltz and Minnewaska State Park. Eleanor House, was very clean and well kept inside and out and had everything we needed for a great summer vacation. Meadow was the perfect hostess - landlord providing directions and suggestions to everything we wanted. We are certainly looking forward to returning next year.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We stayed at Woodrock, for a week and a half. The neighborhood was beautiful, quiet and secluded. The house is absolutely amazing! We were worried about it because we're a family of six and it was described as a two bedroom. The master bedroom is huge with a desk and full mirrored closet. We used an queen airbed and the queen bed that was already in the room and it still wasn't crowded. The bathroom on that side has a jacuzzi tub, which we enjoyed every day. The view from the bathroom is awesome of the woods. The other bedroom with bathroom is on the opposite side of the house providing total privacy for us as parents from the four young ones. It rained while we were there so we were happy that the living room was so big and the kids loved playing in the huge screened in porch, there were outside but protected from the rain. The kitchen was completely stocked with everything I needed to make family dinners for us and company. I've never rented a vacation rental as nice as this one. Meadow was a great help to answer any questions that we had during our stay. I'd give it five stars for cleanlines, spaciousness, scenery and affordability. Each bedroom and the living room has it's own balcony.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
