Villa Luna is a free-standing villa from the turn of the last century. It is situated along with several other houses in Pognana Lario, above the lake. Pognana is a small village and the pretty house with its around 1000-square-meters garden offers a great deal of privacy and quiet.
To reach Villa Luna, you will need to park your car on the road above and walk down an approximate 200-meter path with flights of steps (365 steps - yes, we counted them). The lake is then a further 100 meters down the path (254 steps). The steps are quite steep and of cobbled stone, therefore not suitable for elderly guests.
Once at the shore you will find a small, romantic harbor and langing stage for ferries, which stop (in summer) one or two times a day. Walking along the lake shore, you will find after 150 meters a place where to enter into the water. In summer, only when the water table is lower, there is even a very small gravel beach.
A gate with two lion-crowned pillars invites one into the property. At the edge of the property, a small stream burbles down to the lake. The villa has three floors. A plaque shows that the house was built in 1909. It has been plastered in pale pink with red shutters. A pink oleander grows at the entrance to the house.
The furnishings in this art nouveau house are comfortable and simple. There are several pieces of antique furniture but do not expect luxury - that is provided by the wonderful view of the lake and the peaceful location. The sitting room and dining room walls are painted in soft apricot colors and the floor is antique: red, gray, and white hexagonal tiles, typical for the area.
On the upper floor, well-polished wooden floors gleam. The dining room with its long wooden table in front of the open fireplace is particularly cozy. There are original lamps from the 1920s and typical antique wardrobes in several of the bedrooms. The bedrooms look towards the lake and have magnificent views of the same. Some rooms have a balcony.
Villa Luna is a cozy house with a nostalgic, romantic atmosphere. It is a place where time has stood still and where one is reminded of one's childhood... The house is built on a rock and there is a typical small grotto in which wine and cheese used to be kept fresh.
There is also a pretty garden with seats where the guests can enjoy outdoor meals under a pergola, a sunny patio, a vegetable garden with lettuce, tomatoes, and parsley. The garden has a palm, a fig tree, rose beds, bay bushes, rosemary, and neat lawns. The fairy-tale view of the lake is particularly magical.
Villa Luna has a great deal of charm but enjoys guests who appreciate the special flair of this house: the atmosphere reminds one of days long gone - as everything was so much simple and more poetic...
The small village, Pognana Lario, is 12 kilometers northeast of Como. In Pognana you will find a grocery store, a post office and a bar. The pretty villages dotted along the side of the lake can also be reached on some days with the ferry. The next restaurant is a ten-minute walk away. There is a tennis court, boat hire, and swimming pool in the vacation resort La Cava - also a ten-minute walk/500 meters (only in summer).
The bus stop for Como is directly in front of the bar of Pognana. The journey to Como takes about half an hour. A visit to the smart town of Como is a pleasant contrast to the peace and tranquility of the villa. In Como elegance surrounds you: straightforward architecture, elegant shops between the town wall and the promenade, stylish, wood-paneled cafés and restaurants, and, of course, several beautiful museums await your visit.
Furthermore, the town of Como is a world-wide leader in silk production. Even private customers will have the unique opportunity to buy material, scarves, or ties directly from the manufacturers in Como. Como has a railway station where you can take a quick train ride to Milan. Villa Luna is ideally placed for numerous excursions in the beautiful pre-alpine countryside or to Bellagio - also known as the pearl of the lake, because of its beauty.
