Castello Maremma, a castle on a hilltop. From the distance, the Castello might look like a castle, but as you reach the top of the hill and drive through the gate the feeling is more that of an informal hamlet. To the left is the honey colored main house, with a fountain gurgling in the front courtyard.
The buildings to the right - a simpler architecture decorated with a great number of geraniums in terracotta pots of different size and shape - house two families working on the estate as well as the stables, the granary, the watchtower, and the Casa al Borgo, an other apartment for rent. Originally a hunting lodge, the property is now used all year round. The nearby seaside (14 km) has made it attractive during the summer months (from May to October). In late autumn and winter this estate becomes a wonderful place for combining cultural experiences with Tuscan Country Life. The vicinity of the sea softens the climate.
The main building offered here - known as the Castello - was re-adapted into a residence during the 18th century. It is designed to be perfectly divided into two parts, the winter quarter and the summer quarter. On the ground floor there are two living rooms, a large dining room, a fully-equipped farmhouse kitchen, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms (one with shower and the other other with tub and head-shower). A door opens onto a staircase with beautiful decorations in trompe-l’oeil, at the top of which is a landing which leads to a further four double bedrooms and one single room. There are two bathrooms, one with shower and one with shower and bathtub and two basins.
The Castello has always been the family home of the Principi Corsini, one of the most important and powerful families in Italy, who have lived in Tuscany for over 800 years. The Corsini family has personally taken great care in choosing the furnishing, the paintings and all the details in the course of the years. Most rooms on the ground floor have large fireplaces, as does the kitchen. The patio at the front of the house, with its wisteria covered pergola, is a wonderful place to escape the heat of the summer.
On the oppsite side of the house is the three-tiered garden with its profusion of citrus trees and palms. A pathway through the garden leads to swimming pool. The view from the garden and the house looks onto silvery olive groves, sweeps over the plain and across to the sea.The atmosphere of this house conveys the charm of a private home and is very special: the solid house, the unchanging view, the three palm trees swaying in the gentle breeze ... it is as if time stands still here.

About Marsiliana and the Maremma area - A lesser known and therefore all the more captivating part of Tuscany, the Maremma extends along the southern Tuscan Coast. As it moves away from the sea, the land slowly rises, shaping hills covered in olive groves, fields and woods. The hamlet of Marsiliana stands on the edge of the plain, on top of the first small hill, only 14 km from the sea. It is the centre of a 2800 ha property which consists mainly of woodland and Mediterranean macchia.
The views from here are marvelous, looking out onto the blue Tirrenean Sea to one direction, onto olive groves, far-stretching fields and rolling hills on the other. Never before has this extensive private property been open to the public and it is therefore comparable to a natural preserve where wild boars, porcupines, roebucks, tortoises, badgers, and herons live in a still undisturbed surrounding. Once a week the guests are welcome to join the gamekeeper of the property. He will take you to hideouts from where you can observe the animals, lead you to the Etruscan necropolis and show you the medieval remains of the old castle La Castellaccia.
In the vicinities of Marsiliana there are several archeological sites to visit, such as the Etruscan remains at Roselle and Vetulonia, and pretty villages to investigate, such as Manciano and Pitigliano. Your first glimpse of Pitigliano will possibly stay with you for the rest of your life and the next day you might be taking a walk on the beach, doing your shopping at the local market, looking for mushrooms and collecting chestnuts in our woods and later on cooking a wonderful meal to go with a glass of the local red wine, the Morellino di Scansano. Beyond the borders of this estate you will discover an area rich in cultural landmarks, a beautiful countryside, good food and excellent wine, combining the charm of the Tuscan way of life with the joys of an unspoilt coast.
Distances: Siena is a one hours drive from Marsiliana, Rome, Florence and Pisa are two hours. Viterbo, former papal residence is at less than an hour‘s drive, and Tarquinia and Tuscania are reached in one hour. The beach and the sea - a beach of fine sand stretches along the coast. The water is clean and ususally warm enough to swim in from Mid May through October.
