Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

From North Carolina, living in the Middle East, Leslie working in humanitarian aid and Bill working for the US Embassy in Amman. Looking forward to our summers at home, a visit to our cabin and our condo. We are blessed.

Why the Owner Chose New River State Park

We love the location of the cabin and the cabin itself. It sits in a beautiful, low density area on the river and the cabin is so cozy and quaint. So much to do with hiking, tubing, canoeing and biking options all around. Great restaurants and great outdoor experiences with the New River, the Virginia Highlands, Boone and Blowing Rock nearby.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Early morning or afternoon walks along the river and fishing or tubing outside your door. Beautiful 30 minute drive to the Virginia Highlands, great hikes on the Appalachian Trail, picnics. An evening campfire in the fire ring at the cabin.

Someone who needed a very relaxing vacation

Listen - if you need a beautiful and peaceful get-a-way or vacation, this is the spot to come. We are from Kentucky and we joined our freinds from Virginia for a week in early May 11. What a wonderful time we had. A camp fire almost every night, a restful and relaxing sleep, the cabin was very comfortable. The towns within driving distance (Boone, Blowing Rock, W. Jefferson, Jefferson) are a must to visit. If given the opportunity we'll be back again. By the way, my friend caught the biggest rainbown trout he had ever caught about 1/4 mile up stream from the cabin. What a wonderful time we had. I would recommend renting this vacation cabin to all.

Owner response:We frequently get questions about fishing in the neighborhood. Thanks for the news about your big rainbow trout!

A Part of Heaven

We found the cabin with no problem, your directions were very precise. It's such a lovely place. Your cabin is very comfortable and feels like home. Of course I picked the coldest time to be there but the plus was getting to see the snow, so pretty. At one time it was snowing so hard you couldn't see the cabin which was across the river. We enjoyed the wildlife, especially the deer. A doe crossed the river every morning and a squirrel was determined to eat the straw like rocking chair. I think the squirrels nest will be made out of your chair. Thank you for sharing your part of heaven with us. Truly a great vacation. Take care and I hope you get time soon to enjoy what you have there. Time moves too fast so we must enjoy everything we can. Have a blessed life.

Great vacation!

Date of Stay: 07/18/10 Review Submitted: 08/25/10

My family and I spent a week at River Roost in July 2010. We found the cabin clean, neat and completely charming. Despite a couple of heavy rains, the river was rather low during our stay, so kayaking/tubing was a challenge in places, but lots of fun just the same. We saw a couple of turkey hens and their brood strolling up the road, several does with spotted fawns, white cranes, mallard ducks, a family of muskrats and even one water snake! (We were headed in the same direction, but only briefly!) The town of West Jefferson was an absolute treat. We spent many afternoons exploring all the interesting shops or dining in local restaurants. (We found Fletchers to be an excellent choice for lunch, but a little pricey for our budget for dinner.) The public library is right downtown, with computer access, periodicals, and a great selection of used books for sale! We made day trips to Blowing Rock, Boone, hiked along the Parkway, and rode our bikes on the Virginian Creeper Trail, but by far, my favorite part of the day was the early morning hours and late evening hours spent rocking on the porch and listening to the river and the sounds of nature. That made it all worthwhile. A couple of tips: Our cell phone didn't work at all at the cabin, so you may want to buy a phone card before you arrive so you can check up on the homefront. Once there, you can give your family the cabin number so they can call you as well. It's not far to town as the crow flies, but it seems farther because the roads are so crooked. Buy extra essentials like paper towels, bathroom tissue, ect. If you run out, it's a real pain to drive all that way for one item. There is a tiny country store (go back out to the paved road and turn right). The owner is very friendly, but has very limited items, and in short supply, but sometimes this will save you a trip all the way to town. The washer and dryer are in an unfinished basement. This didn't bother me, but it might present a problem for some folks who aren't comfortable in such places. DON'T turn on the washer if someone is in the shower! The water pressure in the house disappears when the washer is running. I hung our wet clothes and towels from the river on the porch railing until after everyone had showered, then would do my laundry before or after dinner. I hope these tips will help make your trip more enjoyable. It's a great cabin in a great location! It ranks as one of our best family vacations.

River Roost, New River Log Cabin

My Husband, and I stayed at this cabin in May 2010. It is a nice clean cabin, and the view was great. We did have a few rainy days, and that caused the river to swell, and flow faster which was kind of nice to see. A few mallard ducks hung around which we liked. We golfed and kayaked when we could, so it made a very enjoyable week away from home.

Our group of 6 totally appreciated the clean compfortable surroundings, and really enjoyed the peaceful river-front settings. Some previous experiences we have had with river-front properties (musty, sticky, spidery, etc) were NOT the case at all with River Roost. We enjoyed area towns (West Jefferson, Boone) and hiked Grandfather Mountain (the summit trails are a true challenge but rewarding), biked the New River Trail in Galax (Va), also did a great bike ride in Ashe Co. along the Railroad Grade road to the Todd country store. And of course, we kayaked and tubed the New River right out the back door! Grayson Highlenads and Damascus were al;so great fun. GREAT week!

What a fantastic vacation we had at River Roost. The "cabin" is really a beautifully appointed home. Very clean and comfortable. Everything you could possible need in the kitchen. Great napping (or TV watching) chairs in the living room. We ate almost every meal on the porch with has plenty of chairs and an amazing view of the river. We walked into the river every day for fun and fishing and also had a great canoe trip that ended at River Roost! This is the place we have been searching for and we can't wait to come back!!!!

We had a great time kayaking and fishing. The area has much to offer, and your info book was appreciated. We saw two deer walking in the river right in front of us as we were sitting on the deck. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. Thanks for making your cabin available. We hope to be back soon.

What a wonderful place to vacation! Our family had a great time at the cabin. The area is beautiful. The suggestions to visit Grayson Highlands and the Virginia Creeper Trail were so appreciated. If you stay here, these are the places to go. Thank you for a perfect vacation for my family. Also, for a great day for the older kids, you can drive 30 miles south to Boone so the kids can climb the rock wall. (the adults too if you are up to it!)
