Creekside Cabin in the Woods

This is a beautifully forested 8 1/2 acre property at the end of a private 250 yard drive. The rush of the creek greets you as soon as you climb out of your car. Because the property slopes down through the trees to the water you can sit on the deck and look off towards the opposite ridge or make your way down the stream and hang out among the sunlit boulders by the campsite. It feels wild down there and it is. Apart from the usual deer and raccoons, we've seen foxes and otters, bobcats and weasels, and have occasionally come across bear tracks. All of this and we're only minutes from the great restaurants and bistros in town, not to mention the four movie theaters in the area.
As for the cabin itself, it is sheltered by firs and pines and sits well away from the main lodge-style home.
There is also a beautiful campsite, complete with a tent, cots and bags, beside a large, tree shaded pool. You can spend a night roughing it, then shower in the cabin and have dinner out on the deck.
But the biggest draw is the stream itself , which is filled with wild rainbow and brown trout. These are small stream fish, the largest going around 13 inches, and catch and release fly fishing is allowed. There are also three lakes within ten miles of us, not to mention the three forks of the gorgeous Yuba river (the north fork looks like New Zealand!). And just twenty minutes south of us is the South Yuba which boasts steelhead (in season) and huge rainbows and browns.
And then there is tennis. There are any number of public courts, and pros who offer lessons, and two private clubs.
And golf, a driving range only minutes away, and three big courses within twenty five minutes.
As for skiing, Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge are forty minute away, the North Star resort ten minutes farther up the road in Truckee.

My husband and I brought along our 2 year old daughter for a family vacation at this lovely cabin. We had a wonderful time! Everything was perfect, the cabin was super clean and comfortable and the furnishings added to the cute rustic charm. The trails on the property are numerous and fun to explore. I especially liked that the owners made sure to get rid of the all of the poison oak. The washer and dryer in the cabin were a huge bonus, it was nice not having to take a bunch of dirty laundry home! All in all a wonderful trip! Can't beat the fresh air and the scenery! Thank you Scott and Janet!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My wife, young daughter and I stayed here during a short get-away. Frankly, the inside pictures don't to the place justice. The cabin is new (only a few years old) and very cozy. Even though it was relatively cold (low 40s, rain) we were warm and happy. The cabin is clean and Scott has put an emphasis on attention to detail. The cabin has pretty much everything one might need. Also, the property has a lovely trail network on the hillside. We had an outstanding experience! We look forward to staying here again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I just spent three great days in Nevada City. This 2 bedroom cabin was a balance of "the great outdoors" and a five minute drive to the classy, Gold Rush town: Nevada City. Nevada City is a charming town with fun shops and a selection of restruants. The description on VRBO and the photos are acurrate. There were no unwanted surprises. The cabin is very well situated and has every ammenity that I can think of. The owners were friendly without being intrusive. I will definity be back for a longer stay. this message was approved by my dog, Cody.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My husband and I spent an anniversary weekend in this cabin in August 2011, and these pictures do not do it justice! What a fantastic setting in the woods and well appointed cabin. We would recommend this property to anyone. Some of the prettiest surroundings we have ever seen. Very nice host as well.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We just returned from a four-night stay at this pristine cabin on the River. Our family had a perfect trip. We have a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl. It was ideal for us. Our son loved the river and the all the trails along the property. We weren’t worried about poison oak, Scott has made sure to remove it all. At one of the swimming holes on the property was a big tent with two prepared beds and a side table. Our kids loved that, and so did I. It was ideal to have as a place to rest, store your stuff and dry off. The cabin was clean and fully stocked. Everything was there… and then some. I was surprised to see all kinds of toiletries and all the cooking equipment we could have needed. Scott was very helpful and informative on all levels. He even took a hike with us, showing us the best fishing spots, he also had the morning paper at our doorstep. We love this place and hope to return many times. So glad we found it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I have come to stay at this down-to-the-last-detail perfect cabin 3 times and hope to come back again and again. This is our favorite place to cozy up to a good book, get out in nature, and spend quality time doing nothing with each other. Scott & Janet, the owners, have created the perfect place for peace and quiet, yet you are only a quick drive away from the convenience & cuteness of Nevada City. The trail down to the roaring stream is well maintained and the best part of our stays are our creekside walks with our dog, and now our baby girl. Sometimes when we come we eat all our meals in town, but other times, we take full advantage of the cabin kitchen & dining nook. Eight months pregnant in hot July, cooling off in the refreshing creek or putting our new baby in the Baby Bjorn for a drizzly, pine-smelling walk to listen to the rush of the stream, this is the cabin we will always come to to shut the rest of the world away and enjoy the smaller pleasures of life.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

we have been up to scott and janet's wonderful cabin at least 5 times, and plan to continue going up as much as we can. the cabin is by far one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. the cabin itself is a gem - super cute and cozy, but roomy enough for 4 people. plus it's on 8 acres of the most beautiful property you can imagine. you will die when you see how beautiful the river is (well, hopefully not die, but you get the point!). what really makes the experience of being there exceptional is how gracious and fun scott and janet are. they have become family to us. we hope you will love it as much as we do.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I (and our three dogs) spent two nights in this beautiful and tranquil place. The bed was cozy, the views lovely, the air crisp and clean and the water oh-so-tempting. A great spot for a quiet getaway. Our hosts were genuine nice people!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: Scott & Janet are transplants from Santa Monica California via the Florida Keys to Nevada City. What do all these places have in common?--fishing and lots of outdoor activities. Scott is a retired screenwriter, Janet is involved in non profits that benefit children, and neither of them can sit still.
Why the Owner Chose Nevada City:
We built the main house for ourselves and the cabin for our family and friends. But much of the time the cabin sits empty and it's such a great little place we hate to see it unused.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Bird watching, the nightly bat show in summer, and drinks on the deck.
