Taos house description
This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath.
Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.
The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.
This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.
There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house (sleeps 4) in the orchard is so special, the greenhouse is an oasis in the winter and the 1971 Airstream trailer (sleeps 3) in the back pasture is just plain fun. There are also two small cottages and an awesome workshop.
The property has two very different aspects (in keeping with the Gemini owner). A cozy romantic winter retreat with summer possibilities of an entire compound which can sleep up to 15 guests and is perfect for small weddings, seminars, retreats, reunions and art workshops. I can offer a B&B service or cater meals. (Please contact me for summer rates and details.
***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.
This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.
It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

If you're the Marriot type this place is not for you. It's rustic, eccentric and simply an experience to be had for those of you that want a little more character in the places you stay. If you're interested in this rental based on the pictures then you will be wonderfully satisfied when you get to the property. All the pictures are representative of the charm and uniqueness of the property but don't do it justice since there's so much more to explore. If your children like to explore, they will be entertained for several days checking out every nook and cranny of this property. The farm was a huge hit, and the airstream trailer was a museum-like attraction. As a parent, the Kiva fireplace area was a very cozy place to wind down after a day of sightseeing and goofing around in the treehouse was a blast! The lights around the property at nighttime created a very mellow mood. I would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I could not get over what a special place this is. Melissa has a fantastic visual sense. This home is personal, functional and clean, and cozy and warm. There are great pieces of regional art and artifacts in the home, garden and funky outbuildings - the place is gorgeous, a bit bohemian and unique. Exploring the property daily was one of our favorite things to do. The property is large and private and the garden explodes with life. We had never been to Taos before and can't imagine a better way to really experience the place. It was a close drive to town, yet quiet and in the country side. We've rented many great places on VRBO, but this has to rank near the very top. Melissa was delightful as a host. She provides just enough information to make you comfortable, and then you are left alone, feeling like you won the vacation lottery. The home can accommodate large groups easily, particularly in Summer, but we were looking for a romantic spot and it suited us perfectly. We spent much of our stay reading, sleeping and just being together and never went out before noon. Our six days flew by too soon.

Owner response: Hi Lynda, thanks so much for your glowing review. You used some of my favorite words and what I always strive for in all my homes. These words are--Personal, Fun, Clean, Cozy, Warm, Romantic, Funky and Unique. I always love sharing Taos with first timers and enjoyed our phone conversations before you arrived. I'm glad my home and Taos made such a good first impression and hope to see the two of you on a return visit in the future. Melissa

I know I'm supposed to officially request a guest review, but as my many guests know I'm old fashioned and favor the personal touch. I love my kitchen table love notes guests leave behind. Wonderfully eclectic rustic casita & grounds!
Wonderfully eclectic rustic casita & grounds!
We really enjoyed staying here. It was perfectly located - convenient to shops and restaurants but still rural enough to capture the authentic feeling of Taos. It's very eclectic & bohemian, but still very comfortable. The kitchen is full of everything you need to cook. The grounds are amazing with outbuildings, a treehouse and fabulous 'yard-art.' We highly recommend renting this property.

Owner response: Judy, thanks for your review and kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my home and your time in Taos.
We really enjoyed staying at this property. It was perfectly located—convenient to town but rural enough to capture the authentic feeling of Taos life. We stayed there in the winter and it was very cozy. We appreciated the multiple fireplaces, woodstoves and hot tub. The whole place was designed with a lot of care and attention to detail—it's funky and bohemian, while still being comfortable and classy. It would be fun to go back in the summer with a larger group when the garden is in bloom. With all the little outbuildings and treehouse, this place could sleep around 20 people and be a fantastic venue for a celebration!

It is pretty spectacular in the summer with all my big trees, lawn and flowers everywhere Hope to see you again.

A note from Cintra... I wanted to write and tell you how much I loved staying in your incredible house in Taos. It was exactly what I was hoping for, and just what I needed--a place with the altitude and peace to attain the clarity of mind I needed to attack a long and cantankerous book rewrite--combined with enough charm and beauty and cozy domestic extras that I felt totally spoiled while I was doing it. There is really an ineffable quality about your sense of design--it's really friendly and welcoming and good vibey. I loved how every corner of your property had some personal, gorgeous, thoughtful decorative whim about it--something unexpected, but harmonious with the whole--from the Mardi Gras beads in the trees to the kachinas over the dining table. It's a difficult trick for designers to pull off, but you seem to have an effortless way with your style, both interior and exterior. It's similtaneously luxurious, expansive, generous and relaxed. Getting to experience the winter from the inside of your glowing adobe was like being fully immersed in a hot buttered rum! Also, needless to say, Nellie is a Magic Cat. And I usually hate cats!!! Mainly--I can't thank you enough for being so remarkable through and coming to my rescue so quickly and completely whenever I had some typical urban tourist difficulty navigating that unusual artic cold snap! I was really impresswd with the way a whole cavalry was dispatched when I ran into any difficulties and very grateful. I felt entirely safe there all by myself--it was a beautiful solitude even at double digits below zero (your Uggs boots were great) and I really miss it! It was very inspiring to me. I only hope I can come back in the summer and see your incredible gardens! Thanks again and I really do hope to return! Your place was a beautiful experience for me! Thank you!!!

Three months in Taos
Three months in Taos
Melissa's old adobe home is everything she describes. The garden, beautiful trees ,tree house ,hot tub will make your stay magical. We came to stay for three months to experience living in an Adobe in Taos, and this truly was a Taos experience. We had a touch of Fall when we arrived and it was spectacular with all the colors of the leaves on the many trees on the property. The garden was a delight and tomatoes and chard were still there for the picking. The winter brought a new beauty to the surroundings and a reality. The snow was lovely and it got very cold. You really will be lighting the kivas and gas fires to stay warm. Spring, Summer and Fall would be best time to enjoy what the property has to offer outdoors. If you are not cat people, this may not be the place for you. Melissa was very helpful and a wealth of information on the happenings in Taos, restaurants, things to do. She has a wonderful shop in town with lots of truly great stuff.. we bought fabulous gifts to take home.

This property is truly unique!
This property is truly unique!
If vacationers are looking for an out of the ordinary destination, this property is for you. When we planned the vacation, I never dreamed I would be picking and serving green beans and tomatoes from the owner's garden! We really appreciate the owner's suggesting events in Taos that enhanced our stay. When we were not exploring northern New Mexico, we enjoyed the gardens, birds, and butterflies just out our backdoor.

Owner response: Hi Ann, I am so glad you had a wonderful Taos vacation. I enjoyed meeting both of you. Yes, my garden is producing in abundance. Not only the beans and tomatoes you picked, but chard, zucchinis and soon there will be lots of corn. Fresh organic produce just outside the door is just so fun! All my flowers and big trees do attract the birds, bees and butterflys! Now you know summer is special here and those cool nights always are especially beloved by my Texas guests! You must consider a future fall visit when all those big trees turn golden or in the winter when everything wears a blanket of snow. I love the hot tub in a snowstorm. You can stay in forever while inside is cozy with the fireplaces burning. I especially love the little fireplace in the bedroom... Come back and visit anytime!

About the owner: I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.
Why the Owner Chose Taos:
I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.
