Pua Lani means 'Heavenly Hibiscus and is actually two houses on one large lot (Akala Pua 'Pink Hibiscus' and Ahe Lani 'Heavenly Breezes') located about 100 yards from Poipu's Baby Beach. They share a common backyard which separates the houses by about fifty feet, so they form a mini-compound for family reunions and group vacations. These houses were designed by legendary local architect Robert E. Lee, AIA. Mr. Lee also designed the Poipu Kapili condominiums, the Poipu Bay Golf Resort clubhouse, and dozens of golf clubhouses throughout the world for Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The houses try to capture the old Kauai plantation livability that works so well with the tradewinds, combined with all the modern amenities we have come to expect.
Akala Pua is a three bedroom/three bathroom home with an upstairs living/dining/kitchen with a whitewater ocean view. Each room is designed to catch the cooling tradewinds and there are ceiling fans in every room. There are two master bedroom suites with firm California king beds and attached bathrooms with dual lavs. The third bedroom has two twin beds that can be converted to a king bed, and it has its own bathroom across the hall. The bedrooms are all downstairs and separated from each other by the closets for maximum privacy. The spacious living/dining/kitchen has windows on all three sides for maximum exposure to the tradewinds--it feels like living in a treehouse! The dining table seats eight easily, the outdoor dining table seats four on a covered lanai, and there are four barstools. The large kitchen has granite counters and faces into the living/dining room to allow for maximum interaction. Downstairs there is a full laundry room and a one-car garage in this 1900 square foot home.
Ahe Lani is the cozy two bedroom/two bathroom home all on one level. The room sizes are nearly identical with Akala Pua and very spacious. There is one master suite with a California king bed and an attached bathroom with dual lavs. The second bedroom has two twin beds that can be converted to a king bed, and it also has its own attached bathroom with dual lavs. Like Akala Pua, the bedrooms are separated from each other by the two bathrooms for maximum privacy. The spacious living area if furnished with comfortable island furniture. The dining table seats six people and the outdoor table on a covered lanai seats four people. The kitchen is very spacious and has granite counters.
Shopping and restaurants are nearby. The Beach House Restaurant, one of Kauai's best, is just 350 yards west. There is a new shopping center just 1/2 mile east, and Kukuiula market is just beyond that.
Baby Beach is just 100 yards from the houses, Lawai Beach is just 350 yards west, the Sheraton Kauai beach is .7 mile (about 10 minute walk) to the east, and Poipu Beach Park is about 1-1/2 miles to the east.
Kiahuna Golf Resort is about 1 mile east and Poipu Bay Golf Course is about 3 miles east. Kiahuna Swim and Racquet Club is about 1 mile east.

All our houses are professionally managed by a local realtor named Garden Island Rentals, which is a member of the BBB and located three miles from the houses in case there are any issues.

We just concluded our stay at this beautiful property. The houses are situated one in front of the other with a nice green yard seperating them. There is a kitchen in each and large living space and decks to entertain. The rooms are large with comfortable beds and large baths. Poipu is a very small area and the house is no more than 5 minutes from any beach, restaurant or bar, plus has a ocean view from the top deck. The Kukuiula shopping center is a 2 minute walk and is the newest shopping area in Poipu with upscale restaurants, Bubba's burgers, surf shop and much more. Our family (10 and growing) has been going to Kauai for over 25 years and have rented many houses. We have rented this property for the last 2 years and have already reserved it for next year. Kauai is a special place and this is a special property!

Why Private Homes:
We built these homes in 2005 as a lasting legacy for our children with the hope that they would visit them and Poipu often throughout their lives. Natalie lives in Richmond, VA and Bryan lives in Phoenix, so Poipu is a nice place for family reunions. Also, we have always had wonderful times in Poipu and wanted to build something nice but affordable so other families could fall in love with Poipu also.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The open pavilion design of these houses leads families to spend a lot of time talking, just like the Hawaiians have always done. Guests tell us that they have never had such a great family vacation because they really got to know the other family members. People seem to linger at the dining table after dinner to talk. The kitchen sink faces into the room to promote conversations with people sitting on the barstools. The outdoor tables are comfortable and great places to have morning coffee or afternoon cocktails together. The spacious backyard is a peaceful area for children to play in. The houses have all the modern necessities, but they live like Hawaiian homes did at the turn of the 20th century.
