I can't even put into words how perfectly enchanting this property was during our three day stay. We didn't want to face leaving! My husband and I spent 10 days exploring Northern California, and the days spent in this house and exploring the natural beauty of Mendocino were by far our favorite. The home is the perfect mix of eclectic, minimal, historic, and pure luxury. As a photographer and artistic, I had to rope in my heart seeing all the gorgeous architectural details put into the home, and exploring the grounds of the property. As hard as it was to wake up on vacation and do a sunrise walk across that glorious field to the bluffs looking out over the Pacific, I am SO glad my husband made me do it. I will never forget that magnificence the rest of my days! I HIGHLY recommend anyone staying here to explore around this home during sunrise/sunset. Watch as the fog magically comes pouring in, the flowers glisten in morning dew, and the deer romp around right in front of you. Pure coastal magic. We only dream to return someday....

I have to agree with my fellow reviewers that this place is absolutely gorgeous. It is situated on a beautiful stretch of land--and right across the street is a stunning series of trails - you need never get in your car to see some of the most beautiful spots on the Northern California coast. The town of Mendocino is a 2 minute drive as is the state park with even more hiking but you may not want to spend all your time outside of this lovely, comfortable, romantic loft.

The Barn Loft Cottage is simply amazing. The stunning craftmanship and inspiring creativity behind this space is reflected in the beautiful antiques, exposed beams and amenities throughout the cottage. The owners did a fabulous job in making a romantic and comfortable little haven (the velvet drapes, the antique glass chandelier, the antique stained glass panels, the antique Parisian sconces, the high thread count bed linens, the Keurig coffee brewer, and the cobblestone gas fireplace). We had a wonderful long birthday weekend at the Cottage: we hiked down to the beach, walked around a eucalyptus grove located on the property, took photographs, shopped in Mendocino, and relaxed in our charming cottage. We are looking forward to staying here again in the Fall! ....Also, any concerns of having another dwelling located on the same property were quickly expelled - the barn cottage is actually situated in a way that you don't feel you have compromised your privacy.

Wonderful, cozy upstairs loft with forest and meadow views. Walking across the meadow (for us about 20 min.) to the edge of the bluff was breathtaking. Saw many deer peaking up over the grass. The cliffs are amazing. Loved the town of Mendocino, the farmers market in Fort Bragg as well as the smoked meat shop there. I love to cook and got some great things there for our many meals made in house, we stayed 10 days. Goldeneye Winery in Anderson Valley is not to be missed as are Handley Redwood Forrest. Beautiful house and they have a large Victorian and a huge barn if you want a large event. All restored to perfection.

We stayed in the loft at Spring Ranch for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The location is gorgeous, directly across from the most beautiful golden fields that lead to the ocean cliffs. This is an amazing walk that offers photo ops with each step. The property itself is eye candy for those who love historic design, restoration, soulful living, reclaimed materials and/or exquisite creativity. There are 4 buildings on the grounds; a farmhouse, 2 barns, and a "chicken coop". All are beautiful in their rustic luxury. The owners have meticulously restored the barn loft using reclaimed materials from around the world staying true to the character of the overall property. The loft was very comfortable and well appointed, with lovely views and a wonderful king sized and cozy bed. Talking to Derek, who was working on site when we arrived, was a real treat. His dedication and experience with the project is a true labor of love.

The description and photos of this place are great and right on but only just a taste of what you really get while staying at the Spring Ranch barn loft. If you have bad weather everyday you are here, you won't care because the space is not only a visual treat but a luxury for the senses. Every possible comfort was planned for and provided. Super comfortable bed and bedding, beautiful fireplace and living room area, perfect kitchen that inspires cooking, great bathroom with towel warmer and double sinks plus a wonderful wooden soaking tub under the stars. Great views of the Mendocino area countryside from every room. Fascinating history of the property provided. The truly amazing surprise for us was that the property is across the road from a picture perfect, almost untouched field of grasses and wildflowers that are part of a state preserve. Deer popped their heads up but seemed unafraid as we walked through the field. Oh, and then there's the ocean! You can see it from the barn loft and across the fields but you still can't be prepared for the fact that you can not only walk along the rim of the ocean cliffs but down onto the rocks to study the tide pools and seaweeds dancing in the clear turquoise waters while pelicans soar just above your head. We were mesmerized by the magic of the whole place and wound up extending our stay. And if you want to explore further, Mendocino with it's great restaurants (we tried 3 - all were excellent) and several stunning park areas and activities are only minutes away. We've been lucky enough to have done a lot of traveling around the world, staying in many awesome places. This one now sits high on the top 5 places to stay again.

The Spring Ranch Cottage is the perfect place to stay in Mendocino. It's a mile from the town, so you have complete privacy and relaxation, but close enough to get there in less than a minute! The room is war, cozy, and the perfect size. Fireplace, large bed, and top of the line ammenities. Most importantly, you have a beautiful view of the ocean from your winow. Deer frolick outside the cottage, and the coffee is as simple as a button! I wouldn't stay anywhere else!

We just had a supremely relaxing three-day weekend and enjoyed every minute of our stay in the carriage house. The pictures here really don't do it justice. It is cozy, charming, clean, comfortable, and so well designed. We had a lot of fun noticing the details and care that went into this loft. Every door knob, hinge, cupboard, stone, light fixture, and beam was something to look at and marvel over. The place is full of history and stories. The living room window looks right onto the state preserve and coast's edge. We walked out the front door and onto the path to one of the most beautiful scenic trails I have ever seen. It is a gorgeous loop with breathtaking views. We happened to have been there while the property owners were staying at the farm house next door. They are equally charming people who made us feel welcomed from the moment we drove up. All in all, it was a perfect weekend getaway. I can't think of what else I could have wanted. We will definitely be returning to this place.

Owner response: We enjoy hearing from our guests - thank you very much for your favorable review! We hope you will return very soon! Thank you, Owners - Spring Ranch Mendocino

This is by far, the most charming and place we've been by the sea, and we live in Northern CA. For the creative and resourceful types, this is absolutely an architectural delight. The barn wood, shutter doors, arched windows, hutches, cabinets and furniture is literally from all around the world, reused and made into a rustic, yet elegant, sophisticated, and cozy cottage filled with beauty and grace. It brought us back to remembering how simple and delicious life can be. As a one bedroom loft, with original hand hewn beams in the cathedral ceilings and gleaming hardwood floors, one feels the spaciousness and majesty of the Mendocino Redwoods, even while lying in bed. It was really hard to leave and return to the frenetic buzz of modern life. We look forward to a time we can return and continue to retreat. We highly recommend this cozy cottage loft for a romantic get-away, or a quiet solitary retreat.

                  Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: We are a family of two professionals and a daughter that live in Sausalito, CA. I grew up on the East Coast where it is typical to have an old large family vacation home on the ocean. We wanted to find a home like this near San Francisco where we could invite all of our friends and family for weekends and holidays. This is the perfect place to enjoy each other's company in a traditional setting.

                  Why the Owner Chose Mendocino:
When we go to Mendocino for a weekend or one night we feel like we truly got away. The drive to Mendocino through Anderson Valley is one of the most beautiful drives in all of the USA. The location of the house is ideally situated with open space in every direction and views of the ocean. If you want a cup of great coffee or newspaper it is only one mile to the village of Mendocino.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
This building was an original carriage barn built in 1869. The location is ideal, just 1 mile from the village of Mendocino, yet in the middle of Spring Ranch Preserve. Walk down to the ocean through the Spring Ranch open space preserve and enjoy one of the most pristine coast lines of Northern California.
