2 dogs, 2 adults and we're already planning our next trip back with friends. The cabin is exactly what you want and expect. We opted to sleep in the livingroom on the futon couch with all the windows next to the fireplace instead of the bedrooms and loved it. Take the drive to Sequoia Crest & Stagg Tree! It's amazing & makes the trip...but if you don't have 4 wheel drive or chains go 5 minutes on Camp Nelson Drive to the Sequoia grove a mile away. The locals in the general store & bar are so friendly & helpful you'll feel like you we're born there. Can't wait to come back. Thank you!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, people with disabilities, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

My partner and I...and our two dogs spent 3 wonderful days and nights in this cosy "home-away-from-home". We booked two nights and immediately booked a third night on arrival because we were so taken by this beautiful Cabin. Camp Nelson is an undiscovered treasure, beautiful hiking, amazing views and a population of 180 people (most of whom were out of town)...perfect! We both work in the hustle of "Hollywood" and were concerned about "NO CELLPHONE OR INTERNET". Subsequent to our visit, I have promised myself to do it at least twice a year and so should you!!!! If you need to get away and need a break from it all...book this Cabin NOW! P.S. We walked to rental office ('cause we couldn't call or text) and met with the agent who handles this property and she was wonderful and welcoming. Book now because if you don't...we may have already booked it and it won't be available:)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

My wife and our two daughters stayed up in Camp Nelson the weekend of the Apple Festival in Springville, October 14-16th, 2011. We decided to take the road up through California Hot Springs past the Trail of 100 Giants, which is a dense grove of Giant Sequoias. On the Friday we drove up, the grove was actually closed, supposedly to a downed Sequoia. So if you're planning on heading that way, it's probably best to check with the forest service first. (On a side note, the road through CA Hot Springs up to the 100 Giants Trail is pretty windy, so carsick travelers be forworned!) After getting to the cabin and Camp Nelson, we were pleasantly surprised at this little mountain hamlet. There were literally a family of deer just roaming about in the Nelson Meadow, which is walking distance from the cabin, right around the corner from the Camp Nelson Store and Tavern. The cabin itself has a nice, open layout where you walk into the kitchen and living room, with the 2 bedrooms and bathroom in the rear of the house. Excellent mountain view out of nearly every window, and an expansive porch to lounge around on and have coffee. For those with dogs, there is even a separate bedframe and mattress (stowed away), so your dog will have a place to hang out on the porch. I would highly recommend bringing some firewood, as the fireplace going at night and in the morning was a big plus for us. As the description states, the cabin is walking distance from the store. On the weekend we were there, the only place open at night was the tavern, but friendly lady in the rental unit adjacent to the cabin let us know we could get pizza and take our girls in there without a problem. This really saved us! After driving all day, we were looking forward to not making dinner. As it turned out, they were actually serving burger, fries, and some other appetizers the night we were there, and you couldn't ask for friendlier people. Just remember to bring your headlamps and/or flashlights with you, as there aren't any streetlights in Camp Nelson, and it get's dark! Local attractions we are looking forward to going back to would be: Springville Apple Festival (~25 minutes), hiking in Belknap (2 minutes up the street), fishing the Tule River, hiking Grante Dome (~30 minutes), hiking to the Needles Lookout (~20-25 minutes), exploring the Freeman Grove (~20 minutes), and the 100 Giants Trail (~50 minutes). (All times in parenthesis are estimated driving times from the cabin).Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners.

We just came back from our stay at this cabin. It was a perfect place to take our 2 dogs to. The large fenced yard is what we needed. The dogs beds inside and the dog bed outside, the dog door, everything is what a dog owner could ask for. Besides the dogs, we, a family of four, also enjoyed our stay. The view from the front patio is awesome, fresh mountain air, nice breeze, a peaceful place for morning coffee, and evening BBQ. The humming birds happily chasing each other between the two humming bird feeders. This cabin is also located within a nice short walk to the general store, the tavern, the gift shop and the meadow.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners.

We stayed in this cabin with my in-laws who are both in their 80"s. It was clean and cozy and very comfortable. We saw amazing wildlife from the deck. This cabin is very secluded so if you plan to get away from it all - this is the place to do it . My only comment would be that because there is no internet or cell phone reception ,purchase a phone card ahead of time so you can call family if needed from the land line. Also the nearby store is fairly well stocked , but not with fresh items like vegetables or fruit or meat - so bring the basics, you can buy the extra's at the Camp Nelson Store. This is a fabulous area to explore and hike. We were awestruck by the sequoias and the views. I would definitely recommend this cabin for people looking for a get away .Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, pet owners.

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our first anniversary and it was perfect. Our black lab was welcome to come with us, which was perfect!!!! This cabin is beautiful!!!! It is fully stocked with everything that you might need staying in the mountains. It is EXTREMELY dog friendly (the owner even installed warm water outside for doggy baths :-) The view is really nice and you can enjoy it from sitting on the coach, watching a fire in the fireplace. This cabin is also very close to CA-190 so amazing hikes are easy to get to. It is very quiet and private. The PERFECT getaway!!!! We plan to return this summer with another couple. There is enough space for 4 adults to be comfortable and maybe more. I can't say enough nice things about our experience!!! It was perfect. The real estate agent is kind and very easy to work with. Plan your trip today - you will not have any regrets - only relaxation!!! The only thing that I would ask - is PLEASE treat this cabin with respect - I want to keep renting here through the years. The way that the owner has this place set up, you can tell that she trusts her renters! Please keep it that way! -LauraRecommended for: Families with teenagers, people with disabilities, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

About: Mia Gyzander, Costume Designer/Business Owner Originally from, Stockholm, Sweden, Mia earned a business degree before moving on to fashion design, patterning, draping and tailoring. She worked as a Fashion Designer traveling the world for production follow-up for several years before moving to the US in 1993 to pursue Costume Design. She earned a degree in theatrical costuming and started working in the entertainment industry as a freelance designer. In 1996 she started her business, working out of her apartment doing everything from patterning to sewing herself. Over the years the business has grown in to a corporation currently having up to 30 employees.
Why Camp Nelson:
became the proud owner to this property in March 2008.
I used to travel every year somewhere I the world for vacation but as my business grew, it became more and more difficult to get away for more than a week. I started looking in to getting a vacation home to have easier access for quick getaways. Real estate prices close to Los Angeles are out of proportion so I searched for areas further away. I remember camping in the Sequoias many years ago and looked in to the area and found Camp Nelson.
The first summer here (2008) I spent most of my time working on turning the garage in to a guesthouse. The main house and property also needed a lot of TLC. The summer of 2009, I enjoyed the amazing surroundings and nature of the area. There are numerous trails for hiking with stunning nature views. Just relaxing on the deck is also amazing and extremely rejuvenating!
I have collected tourist information in a binder that is available in the cabin.
