"Il Seccatoio" is a newly restored Tobacco Tower and barn with marvelous views over undulating hills of olives, vines and woodland. Set in landscaped grounds in a beautiful tranquil valley on the borders of Umbria and Tuscany, this is a little piece of Italian paradise. It makes a perfect base for venturing out into this historical and fascinating region of Italy. Assisi, Perugia, Cortona, Siena, Florence, Gubbio, Spoleto and Orvieto are all within easy striking distance.
From the door off the gallery above the sitting room, cross a little bridge to reach the swimming pool. A pretty landscaped terrace is located outside the kitchen where table and chairs are set for dining "al fresco".
The house is well equipped. Lovely hand carved beams and terracotta floors help to preserve the Italian country atmosphere and every care has been taken with furnishing to provide comfort and pleasure. The imaginatively terraced gardens are as inspired as the interior, stone walls and terracotta urns, olive trees and cypresses. Sitting on the shady, cascading terrace at La Buia with a chilled glass of prosecco, gazing out at the glorious view, is something not to be missed.
Il Seccatoio has an 11 x 7 meters swimming pool which is private.
Traditional Italian dinner; €45 a head.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1988
I first saw La Buia in 1988. My wife and I were looking for a holiday home in Italy and were lucky enough to stumble upon this idyllic old farm house. We had been living in central London for 13 and the beauty of this part of Italy took our breath away and was a welcome change from a busy city. I have been a landscape gardener all my life and so the pull of a different terrain in another part of Europe was strong and inviting. My wife Lucie is a talented painter in oils on canvas. We couldn't get over the star studded sky at night and the gigantic moon that rose over the hills. A haven for someone like me who spends most of my time outside.
Why the Owner Chose Citta di Castello
Apart from the stunning landscape and unspoiled views, the aromas from the wild herbs growing all around is beautiful. This part of Umbria where our old farmhouse is, is in the most perfect position. 2 kilometers up the road you drive into Tuscany and there are 3 beautiful mediaeval towns near and the airport is not far away. Either Perugia or Florence and Pisa. The Umbrian cuisine is unique and mostly home grown by the locals whether it is the sausages or the mozzarella di bufala. Umbrian wine is surprisingly good. La Buia is in a pocket of paradise.
The Unique Benefits of this Villa
Weekly markets in Città di Castello, Sansepolcro, Anghiari and Monterchi. Arezzo 30 minutes drive, is famous for its monthly antique market. There is golf, horse riding, bicycle hire, a spa center down the road with indoor swimming pool. A roller blading rink in Monterchi, ten pin bowling in San Giustino, beautiful walks and serious retail therapy! La Buia is on the Piero Trail; the famous fresco by Piero della Francesca is found in local Monterchi. The Burri Collection of modern art is housed in Città di Castello. There is a wonderful choice of Music festival in the summer. Not far off, in the pretty little hill town of Preggio a small opera festival is held every July. The renown Spoleto Festival and The Umbria Jazz week in Perugia which is spectacular with famous artist performing, are all at your finger tips and a lot of fun. The Chamber music festival of Città di Castello and the Wednesday recitals of classical music in the garden of the Piero fresco in Monterchi 10 minutes drive away just add to the list of entertainment in the area. During the year festivals and feast days are celebrated from patron saints to local delicacies like Porchetta or Funghi. The food on offer is always very good and the company extremely jolly. There are numerous good restaurants dotted around either in town or in the countryside. The peaceful views and breath taking beauty that you can't stop admiring, have a strong impact whilst staying in this hidden valley. Inside the farmhouse is cool in the heat of summer due to the ancient thick walls. The charm of the décor and the warm & friendly atmosphere can't help but make this place very special.

As like all of these reviews this is also copied from a 'comment' in La Buia guest book " Thankyou Lucie & Richard for a truely wonderful stay in your beautiful and lovingly restored Tobacco Tower - everything was perfect! You've been such kind hosts. We'll not forget the crazy 42 degrees C heat that welcomed us and the equally crazy electric storm whilst we were sadly packing up....A big thankyou for everything. The private pool was a joy and the barbequed Italian sausages, the best in the world!" York, UK.

Lucie and Richard have created the almost perfect Umbrian idyll here at Il Seccatoio. The bedroom on the second floor is the nicest we have slept in anywhere in the world - not even mentioning the views! - and our son certainly enjoyed his position at the top of the tower. The kitchen is a wonderful setting to try to recreate the great dishes you sample at local restaurants. And we loved sitting under the gazebo for lunch and dinner. Other memories: our son learning to swim in the beautiful private pool; and the funghi and fichi from La Papaia in Monterchi. We will surely take inspiration from what you have done here when we fulfil the dream of owning our own villa in Umbria.

"What a beautiful haven you have created for your guests. Loved cooking in the kitchen, having the spacious dining room. We have had so much laughter and great moments. You two are special. Our experiences visiting all the towns, finding that Italy encircles you not only with it's beauty of scenery but it is people such as you that make ones trip so memorable.Tatiana was such a sweet heart making us feel welcome. What a great way to celebrate a 50th birthday with your family being our family. From the moment we met, I knew this house was a warm, cozy retreat. We want to say thankyou for the lovely first night dinner and your generous ways . With love from us all from Florida, USA.
