L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue house description
The centuries-old stone farmhouse or Mas sits on 35 acres of farmland on a quiet country road. It is an idyllic and well-situated home for a family reunion or group getaway. A stream winds alongside the house, leading into the clear, cool waters of the Sorgue River. A complete renovation was completed in 2005 characterized by its respect for the traditional Provencal architecture of the Mas and its region, while producing a house with first class, modern amenities.
The house is is both elegant and comfortable, furnished with a combination of Provencal, Moorish and Balinese-influenced décor. Although just a five-minute drive from town, the house has a lovely pastoral setting. Set back from a small road, it sits behind huge plane or sycamore trees over the front terrace area looking over the large swimming pool with olive trees and fields beyond. It offers the perfect mixture of privacy, convenience, comfort, and charm.
The rooms are large and bright, and all face south to the garden. They are decorated with simple lime-washes in warm and exotic colors. Many antique materials and architectural features were incorporated during the recent renovation, which was carried out by both local and regional craftsmen using many ancient techniques.
The main living area on the first/ground floor is a converted 16th century barn attached to the old Mas, spacious and open with old whitewashed ceiling beams and earthenware tile floors. The comfortable living room is furnished with cushioned banquette seating and a beautiful antique limestone fireplace.
Adjacent to this main lounge space is the generous, light-filled kitchen/dining area, with French doors opening onto the expansive terrace. Well-equipped for family meals or parties, the fully-stocked kitchen features brand new appliances (a gas stove with oven, dishwasher, microwave, two refrigerators), a large island for cooking and gathering, and a handsome round table seating up to ten.
Adjoining the main living area is a comfortable music and TV room with a piano and another fireplace. The TV offers satellite access to all major European and English stations/sports/CNN etc. and a DVD player. The main entertaining areas and pool area are served with a hi-fi stereo system with a CD player and iPod hook-up.
Also on this floor is a large laundry room with two washing machines and electric dryer and drying racks. There is also an exterior “parasol” drying area.
First floor suite - One master suite is on this floor, looking out to the terraces and pool in front of the house, the stream nearby and the serene countryside behind. The suite has high ceilings, a fireplace, king-sized bed and en-suite bathroom with shower and tub.
The second floor and mezzanine level offer four more bedrooms, each appointed with quality furnishings, fine Egyptian cotton linens and dressed in rich, warm colors. The grand master bedroom has a soaring ceiling with ancient beams and French doors opening to a balcony overlooking the grounds. It is furnished with a king sized bed and features an en-suite bath with tub/shower and separate dressing room.
Another bedroom on this floor has three twin beds, making it an excellent children’s room. A further bedroom has two large twin beds that may be placed together to form a very comfortable king, ideal for adults or children. Both of these rooms share a bathroom with shower and tub. The quiet study between the master and children’s bedrooms houses the fax and a desk looking out over the pool and grounds.
Mezzanine - A mezzanine level, up a ladder-like staircase, has another private bedroom with two twin beds and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Although safe, the staircase is steep so this room is best suited for older children, teenagers and adults.
Outdoor Entertaining - outdoor dining table
The expansive and lovely grounds invite relaxation and entertaining. They include a bubbling stream running into the adjacent, fabled Sorgue river. It is set about with mature trees and classic provencal plantings including lavender, rosemary and rose bushes and olive, almond, linden and plane trees. Beyond the house limits the pastoral views include fields of wheat, poppies, and wildflowers.
French doors on the south side of the house open onto an 80 x 15 foot limestone-paved terrace where a fountain splashes quietly into an ancient stone basin. Beyond this large terrace with its direct access to the kitchen, is a generous gravel court. These areas are comfortably furnished with outdoor seating for relaxing and dining, all shaded by huge 300 year-old plane trees. The view overlooks the pool area and the fields beyond.
A separate, adjacent lawn area next to the stream offers hammocks strung from more huge plane trees. It’s an enticing spot for true relaxation on breezy summer afternoons, or one may try one’s hand at a game of pétanque or boules on the court nearby.
The sunny pool, at nearly 60 feet long, is great for laps or fun splashing. It is surrounded with a verdant lawn and a lavender-lined garden. The pool house and terrace area offer comfortable loungers, chairs and tables and a vine-covered, shaded pergola for pool-side relaxing. The pool house is equipped as a summer kitchen including a refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, private WC and outdoor shower. The pool area is only steps away from the main house and is fenced for child-safety.
At the end of the day a favorite amenity is a secluded, hot and cold water outdoor shower with views over the stream and hammock area.
