Davis house description
Our home here in Timberline WV, might not look like much from the picture, but inside you will find it is very family friendly. Our home lives and flows perfectly for big families, or several couples to share. The large stone wood burning fireplace dominates the upstairs family room, features vaulted open ceilings, and flows into a large dining area and fully stocked kitchen.
Our home sleeps up to 14 persons with 2 large bedrooms and a full bath upstairs; one bedroom with a queen bed, the other with 2 singles. On the main level you will find a bedroom with a king sized bed and another full bath. Downstairs in the basement you will find a room with a double bed, a half bath, and a separate room with 2 sets of bunk beds. The huge family room also has a futon and pull out queen sofa bed, as well as a large tv, plenty of movies, and games to play. If you are skiers, you will find it's quite convenient to come in from the slopes, and sit to take off your gear right in the locker room. Rubber mats keep the floor safe and there's plenty of storage for everyone's ski gear.
You will love this home!

Definitely Needs Work
Definitely Needs Work
Upon arrival to the house and upon unloading groceries into the kitchen, we noticed that the bottom panel of the stove was broken and laying on the floor. We were told that toilet paper and paper towels would be provided. The paper towels were not. We were also left only two kitchen trash bags, and zero coffee filters for the coffee pot. There wasn't even a working can opener. All small and large appliances did work. Upon visiting the lower level, we noticed water leaking from the basement ceiling, and upon future investigation, we experiences water seeping through the flooring in the laundry room. Also, the house sleeps 14 but has only 2 full baths. That was an issue, but we knew that ahead of time. I would recommend this for a small party, but not for a large group. The house is in some serious need of repair. Would I sat there again? Probably not.

Manager response: I was a bit surprised by your review of my home as you and I chatted by phone, as well as by email, quite a number of times before, during and after your stay. In fact, when we spoke on the day you were checking out you told me that your group was raving about the accommodations, so I'm not sure why the sudden change of heart. As you'll recall, I promptly responded to all of your inquiries prior to your stay, and gratefully accommodated your request to put a hold on the reservation until your group was able to secure the funds for the deposit. When you notified me of the problems you found upon your arrival at the home, I immediately contacted my management company to request maintenance, not to mention that I spoke to you on the phone to ensure that the matter was being resolved. Frankly, I wouldn't consider the leaking pipe and the stove panel missing as our home needing "serious" repair. We take great pride in keeping our home updated and well maintained! In regards to the home not having adequate supplies, the lease, which you agreed to, does state, "There is a STARTER SUPPLY ONLY of toilet paper, bath soap, dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent, and trash bags....NOTE: paper towels, coffee filters, and coffee are not supplied." I'm not sure where the confusion may have come from that these items were to be provided. Many times we do have paper towels & coffee filters in the cupboard, depending on whether a previous guest may have left them there, but it cannot be guaranteed. The same goes for the can opener. We try very hard to ensure that all of the kitchen utensils are there for our guests, however sometimes items disappear and unless we are notified that they aren't there, we don't know. It's difficult to do a complete inventory each and every time a guest checks out, but we do try. As you stated in your review, the house does only have 2.5 baths, but this is very clearly stated in the description. There are enough beds for 14 people; it's up to our guests to determine if they can manage with the limited number of bathrooms. There isn't much I can do about that, and as you said, "we knew that ahead of time". I'm sorry you feel that you wouldn't stay at our property again. We have quite a few guests who come back each and every year with their friends and family, and give us a very high rating. I don't know what more I could have done to accommodate your group. Please contact me to discuss.

Kathy was incredibly easy to work with and has quite a lovely home. Lots of space, so even if you have a group of 14, you don't feel like you're tripping over anyone. It's a quick, relatively easy walk up hill to Salamander. Nice mud room to take off your ski gear and let it dry. We would definitely stay here again.

Manager response: So glad your group enjoyed your stay!
Property as described. Our group of 14 had plenty of room and never felt on top of each other. The kitchen is well stocked and the house was nicely decorated and felt very comfortable. The location is in the mountains of WV at a ski area. However, there is plenty to do in the summer. Caves, caverns, golf, tubing, rafting, hourse back riding, rock climbing, hiking, exploring, and historic sites are all 1hour or less from this home. We spent a week without running out of things for all family members to do. The owner, Kathy, made every attempt to ensure our questions were answered and we enjoyed our stay.

This property was exactly as described on the web site and provided our large family of 13 with a memorable vacation experience. Beds were comfortable, kitchen was large and well-equipped, there were plenty of pillows and towels in good condition. We especially enjoyed the reclinable chairs, sofa and loveseat in the living room! This property is in a beautiful wooded area easily accesible by car to several delightful small towns and 3 WV State Parks with a multitude of activities for everyone. We even rode the T-bar up the ski slope for a wonderful view of the slopes and surrounding country. 2 of our group are in their 70's so the multiple staircases presented small difficulties...not recomeneded for anyone with a handicap.

MANY PROBLEMS AND NO ONE CARED!!!
MANY PROBLEMS AND NO ONE CARED!!!
first, the photo does not accurately depict the house...there is a huge house towering over this house in the back where the hot tub is located. this must be an old photo. second, when we arrived, NONE of the outside lights were working, so we unloaded in the dark. there were over a dozen lights not working inside the house! we started unloading our groceries into the frig., and quess what....the refrigerator was NOT working!!!!! we immediately tried to call the homeowner, and soon realized the phones were not working either. we did have internet service!! so, we emailed her, and she responded quickly. she said that a man from mountain top realty would come and fix it first thing in the morning. for the 3 nights we stayed, we had to use coolers. very unhandy and aggravating. no one ever fixed it, nor did they bring a temporary frig. as they stated they would. they didn't even bother to get back in touch with us. next, coffee pot....it took an hour to brew a pot of coffee..need I say more. no one bothered to help us with this small problem either. the house was lovely inside, decorated very nicely, but the cleaners are ripping someone off. there were many things that were dirty, but the worst was finding rat droppings in the silverware drawer. downstairs in the basement, the smell was almost too bad to stay down there. mildewy and moldy. they had provided a dehumidifier, but it would have needed to be turned on previous to our arrival to take care of the problem. people with allergies or illness, beware. very unhealthy environment to sleep in. the owner said that mountain top realty needed to work on these things, and when i told these problems to mountain top realty, they told me to tell the owner. the fact of the matter is, we payed money to stay in this vacation house, and no one took care of any of the problems, nor did they contact us to say they were sorry, give us a discount, apologize for all the inconveniences or make any excuses!! i rated it fair, because our whole family did get to stay together and it was inexpensive. whether they were collecting $300 or $3,000 shouldn't matter... but it did! they were not collecting enough from us to bother. the little people do matter!

Manager response: First, let me say again how sorry we were that your stay included a broken refrigerator, however, I think the title of this review, and the review itself is overly harsh and untrue. WE did care, and that is why, even though I was out of the country, I responded to the email we got at 11:32PM on June 12th, by 4:12AM on the 13th. And by 10:30AM on the 13th, Mountaintop, our managment company was at the house, fixing the lights and getting a read on what was wrong with the refrigerator. It seems that between the checkout of the previous tenants, and the check in of you all, there had been a storm that knocked out the power. When the power came back on, there was a surge, which blew out the lights, and blew a fuse in the refrigerator. Mountaintop called Sears to fix the refrigerator and they promised to be out the next day. That did not happen, and they took a couple of days to get there, which resulted in you needing to use the coolers. Our only alternative, was to send you away, and refund your money. Things like this happen sometime and they are beyond our control. But to say we didn't respond, or we didn't care, is simply not true. We were on it withing 12 hours, which was overnight. We did discuss with Mountaintop a plan that should this kind of thing happen again, they will do as they say, and bring a temporary appliance until the one that is broken is fixed.I am also sorry that the basic coffee pot we had there took too long to brew the coffee. You see, we have had fancier pots there, an expresso machine at one time, but the tenants destroy anything nice, so we reverted to the basic. We will get a new coffee pot right away, but to say that the fact that it took an hour to brew, vs it not working at all, is harsh for a review in my opinion. You also mention that the house was dirty, and there was RAT droppings in the drawers, and the basement smelled too bad to even sit in. I am just confused why you didn't bring this up to the management company when they came to do the lights? We could have fixed it for you, but it was never mentioned, not to me, nor to them, even though we emailed back and forth. We have had many tenants and the basement has never been a problem. Nor have we EVER in 12 years seen a rat. We are however, in the woods, so mice do come and fequent the house. I guess the cleaners missed the drawers. I have asked them to get on that right away. I am just sorry you did not communicate sooner, I like to think we try and fix problems ASAP.
HIGHLY recommended! We had a wonderful week of family time in January. The house is much nicer than the pics and the ski decor is eye-catching and interesting and inviting all at the same time. We filled the beds but the house is spacious enough that we did not feel crowded. The kitchen is VERY well equipped (nothing lacking!) and has ample seating for a large group. We enjoyed the fireplace, hot tub, forest scenery outside the front window, and family togetherness. The owner was easy to work with and accommodating.

This cabin was as advertised, conveniently located, very well stocked with regard to kitchen utensil and appliances, and spacious. We loved the mud room and it's convenience and large size. The views are nice out the front of this home with a perfect location for skiing as well as hiking. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return .

Positives: house accommodates a large party well with three levels. Just a few minute walk up the hill to the ski slope or down to the lodge. The living room was very cozy and comfortable with a fireplace (plenty of wood), leather couch, love seat and chair. Dining room has a big table for 8. Kitchen was well equipped, but we experienced some problems with the burners on the range. Washer and Dryer provided. Negatives: Sheet and towels were provided, but they need serious upgrading (I recommend bringing your own unless they are upgraded). One of the twin beds was a little squeeky. Could have used a few more cleaning supplies such as hand soap, dishwasher detergent, trash bags, and paper towels Overall, we were satisfied and would consider renting again.

Two families with five teenagers had a blast over the Thanksgiving week. Cabin was spacious and clean. Hot tub was awesome on those cool November nights. Watched lots of deer in the fields during the evening hours and enjoyed a nice two hour horseback ride through the ski slopes with nearby Timberline Stables. By the way, the stables were very military friendly. They waived all fees for active duty military. Would have liked to haver pot holders in the kitchen and toilet paper on hand. We would highly recommend this rental and will likely use it again during ski season.

Year Purchased: 1999
About: Hi, I'm Kathy and I have 2 beautiful grown daughters, one adorable grandaughter, and two handsome grandsons as well. We live in Northern Virginia and love to ski. In 1999 we wanted to go skiing to welcome in the millennium, and we came across this charming home, right on the slopes in Canaan Valley at the Timberline resort. We fell in love. It was such a warm family home. Since that time, my family and friends have spent the beginning of every new year in this home. We have it set up to accommodate lots of family and friends. The downstairs is perfect for kids of all ages to hang out and watch tv or play games, while upstairs is the quiet area near the fireplace. We have it stocked with all cooking accessories you could need, and the hot tub outside is perfect for relaxing after a busy day of skiing. I think your family will love this home as much as we do!
We bought the ski home in this area because it was just a short 3 hour drive from our home in Northern Virginia. The slopes offer many gentle runs, as well as more challenging ones. Canaan Valley is one of the first areas to get snow and it is usually plentiful, at least for the east coast.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love to cook, bake and eat. We play family games at the dining table enjoying the cozy fire in the stone fireplace in the living room. Or we are relaxing with a glass of wine in the hot tub on the covered deck. Sking is right outside our door, but after the ski season is over, white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking and ATV's trails are also fun family spring and summer activities located just minutes from our home
