Completely renovated in late 2009, Baywoods Lodge offers the privacy and tranquility of a large forest-backed setting within view of the sea and your private neighborhood beach, offering unlimited hiking and biking opportunities. But right in the center of Rhode Island's most popular historic towns and beaches, with Wickford, Narragansett, Jamestown and Newport only 3 - 8 miles away.

An authentic hand-hewn log home, Baywoods Lodge boasts 1450 square feet on two levels, a sunroom, and over 750 sq feet of decks and balconies to enjoy the forest setting.

The home has been newly transformed into a luxurious lodge, reminiscent of those of the American aristocracy of the 19th century, featuring fine Oriental rugs, 19th and early 20th century antiques, and hand-carved wood paneling. A state-of-the-art kitchen, two-story living room with fireplace, new bathrooms, and a Master suite with balcony and separate dressing room add to its unique charm.

A Romantic Past

According to our 91-year-old neighbor, Baywoods Lodge was built in 1971 by a couple who were very much in love. The man had it built by Vermont artisans of hand-hewn logs, for his girlfriend. Then, when it was finished, he painted “I love you, honey” on the rafters in the basement. If you check, you can still see the words, in the laundry room.

Our Location
Our Saunderstown location is arguably among the most convenient in Rhode Island, offering local beaches and woodlands, and water sports, sightseeing, shopping, or fine dining only minutes away. Just off two thoroughfares, scenic 1A and RI 138, you can drive to Wickford in less than 5 minutes, and to Narragansett, Jamestown, or Newport in 7 – 12 minutes. Providence is less than 30 minutes away.

The area offers plenty of hiking or bicycling opportunities as well, with a pleasant bike trail to Rome Point - a wild and beautiful peninsula in Narragansett bay from which you can view seals in the wintertime, Casey Farm - a working farm of the early 1700s operated by Historic New England, and Historic Wickford Village, founded in 1680 all within close proximity.

Saunderstown History
Saunderstown was first settled sometime around 1680 by the Willett family of New York. The first owner of the area was Thomas Willett, the first mayor of New York in 1664. His son, Captain Andrew Willet was the region's first resident from 1680 to his death in 1712. The land then fell into the Carpenter family's hands, by inheritance, in 1776. Until the late 1800's the area was known as Willettville.

It received its present name in honor of the ship building family of John Aldrich Saunders, who settled there in 1856 and constructed a marine railway and shipyard. The Saunders family constructed ships and maintained a summer hotel and a ferry service to Jamestown, Newport, Wickford, and Providence.

Saunderstown's Literary Tradition
The literary tradition of Saunderstown began in 1875 when Francis W. Wharton, a well-known writer of her time, along with her coal-magnate husband and her father tired of Narragansett and began to summer in the quiet seaside village of Saunderstown. A frequent guest of the Wharton's was their famous cousin, Edith Wharton.

Owen Wister the author of America's first and one of its most famous western novels, 'The Virginian” lived across the street from the Whartons. One of Owen's best friends was Teddy Roosevelt, who visited occasionally. Wister's biography of Roosevelt was written largely in Saunderstown.

President Roosevelt was also a frequent guest of the LaFarge family who, at the time, lived just down the street from the Whartons and Wisters. The Lafarges, Christopher and Oliver were famous novelists and poets of their time. The Pulitzer Prize winning Oliver is also considered America's foremost American Indian ethnologist.

We took a last minute break in Linda's luxurious and spacious getaway cottage and we were delighted with every aspect of our holiday. Firstly, the location is excellent, just off the 138 (but you wouldn't know it was so close) bridge to Jamestown/Newport - everything seemed to be within easy reach. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly - the beach is perhaps a little further than the photo would suggest - a good walk of 10 mins or car ride of 2 mins. However, with the variety of lovely sitting areas around the cottage, you needn't leave it very often - there are three lovely decks with all the necessary furniture and my favorite retreat, the sun room for when it's not nice enough to sit out. The house was spotlessly clean and well-appointed, lovely fixtures and furniture. With the house solidly made of wood, and being surrounded by trees, it was noticeably dark inside, but this was definitely part of its cozy charm and there is ample good lighting around to create atmosphere. Both bathrooms had lovely HOT showers (great pressure!) - both were small, but entirely satisfactory. The upstairs dressing room (also with basin) was an indulgence which we enjoyed and ensured the bedroom was kept tidier than at home! All beds were very comfortable with nice linens and covers. We also used the laundry facilities which were excellent. I was also pleased to see how many 'extras' were provided, in both the bathroom and the kitchen - (toiletries and kitchen basics) - it was nice not to have to rush out and buy staple items like trash bags, washing up liquid etc. The Rhode Island area has so much to offer it is difficult to list everything, but our personal favorites were a trip on the bay to see the lighthouses, driving over the bridges to Jamestown and Newport, checking out the 'points' - Point Judith at sunset is a must and obviously everything Newport has to offer (the Mansions, marina etc) and we were entranced with Wickford where we had a last meal at the 'Tavern by the Sea' - very nice indeed. Linda was a splendid host, very welcoming and helpful - I mistakenly brought the beach pass home with me, but Linda was the model of diplomacy and hopefully the next guests were not inconvenienced too much. I have no hesitation in recommending this for a 'grown-up' holiday - there is space for the kids, but why not leave them behind and enjoy some quality peace and quiet!

We decided to try something new this summer, and we chose to vacation in Rhode Island. Baywoods Lodge is the first place I saw when I searched online for something other than a hotel. We wanted a nice, private home, near the ocean and activities, but not in the midst of the city bustle. We got exactly what we wanted, and much more! Prior to our arrival, the property owner Linda communicated several "groupon" offers, suggesting fun activities and travel ideas. We really appreciated her suggestions, and took advantage of a few of them. When we first arrived at Baywoods Lodge, we saw a nice, quiet neighborhood, complete with private beach access just down the road. Linda arrived and took us on the grand tour of the home. The photos on the website do not do it justice. It is really quite amazing in person! Linda has a wonderful eye for decorating, and her attention to detail is apparent in every room of the house. You won't need a thing, she has thought of everything. The kitchen is complete (wine glasses, corkscrew too!) and the living room is stocked with several brochures and books on the Rhode Island places of interest. The house is complete with not 1, not 2, but 3 porches to choose from! We spent most of our time in the sunroom, which was perfect in every way. The bed was extremely comfortable, and even though it was warm, we didn't even need the air conditioning. The tree-lined street stayed nice and cool, and there was not one single insect during our entire stay! Coming from the Adirondacks, we expect to see bugs...but there weren't any to be found. I can't say enough good things about Baywoods Lodge, you have to experience it yourself. It is situated conveniently for quick access to Jamestown and Newport, less than 10 minutes to the bridge. We took the ferry to Block Island (highly recommend this!) and did the Cliff Walk in Newport. You have to do that! We're in our 50s and it was so awesome! The weather was beautiful, and we spent a lot of time outside. But if it was rainy or cold, staying inside Baywoods Lodge would have been a welcome and enjoyable option. We will definitely return, and we appreciate the time and attention Linda spends to give her guests a memorable vacation experience. You will love this!

We arrived at Baywoods Lodge and were greeted by Linda who took the time to show us around her beautiful house so we knew where everything was. The house is better than described, it is is perfect, updated condition with every amentity listed. The layout is nice and the extensive decks are wonderful, we spent much time on the deck off the sunroom to enjoy our grilled meals in the evening. The neighborhood is quiet and the private beach was very peaceful. My son had fun catching hermit crabs and swimming out to the dock to jump off of. The location of the lodge is convenient to everything, we spent most of our days in Naragansett at the beaches and evenings we would drive into Warwick- the town is beautiful. Linda recommended Gardner's Wharf Seafood on Warwick Ave to get fresh steamed lobsters while you wait- that was a fantastic meal, along with the fresh stuffed sole we picked up there too. Linda was a wonderful host she called a few days in to see if we needed anything during our stay and wanted to make sure the place was to our satisfaction. Excellent vacation and excellent rental that was above our expectations. We had a wonderful time in RI at Baywoods Lodge.

This was one of the most relaxing vacations we've ever had. The listing description of this home is accurate, but understated. The pictures of this lovely home do not do it justice. It is meticulously clean. Every detail of this home reflects beauty and comfort. It couldn't be more conveniently located - just a few minutes from Narragansett, Newport and Jamestown, but in a different, more peaceful world. We enjoyed staying home as much as going out to see the sights, we were so comfortable and felt so relaxed and at home.

We loved our week at Baywoods Lodge. Linda's attention to detail made for a comfortable stay. Everything you need is provided. The cabin is immaculate(no bug worries here...not even a dust bunny hiding in a corner). Baywoods Lodge is located in a lovely, quiet, wooded neighborhood with the Bay and private beach at one end of the lane and Scenic Route 1A and 138 at the other....Making it the perfect location to get to all Rhode Island has to offer(& so convient to the airport). Linda is the perfect blend of a caring hostess available to immediately address any questions or concerns while giving you space and privacy to relax and enjoy this beautiful retreat she has created for you. You will not be disappointed if you choose Baywoods Lodge for your Rhode Island get-away.

I stayed in Baywoods Lodge with my smooth-coated collie in June and invited different friends to drop in. Everyone was impressed with how beautiful and tastefully decorated the house was. It is everything the Home Away description promised and more. The house is equipped with everything you would want to have in your own home. The combination of rustic cottage appearance on the outside and eloquent furnishings on the inside works surprisingly well. I would gladly consult with Linda, the owner, on interior design. Baywoods is meticulously clean. It is spacious inside and out with numerous decks as well as a decent size yard, including a fenced in area in the back. Linda was helpful, accessible, and an interesting person to talk to. Baywoods Lodge is a private, beautiful, romantic, clean, comfortable place to stay, a little off the beaten path but convenient by car to Narragansetts, Wickford, Jamestown and Newport. I hope to go again. The only problems were that it was hot in the second bedroom, and Linda was waiting for a new air conditioner which arrived just before I left. Also the private beach pass was not available until shortly before the end of my week. Both problems were minor, beyond the owner's control and were being addressed. I loved Jamestown, a great alternative to Newport. Beavertail State Park has wonderful vistas. Trattoria Simpatico has indoor and outdoor dining and terrific food. Wickford is an interesting town to walk around in, stop at the small cafes and shop. Don't waste your time going to Sergio's, the restaurant mentioned as nearby in the lodge description. The food was terrible and expensive. Instead, for a great dining experience, go to the Rhode Island Quahog Co. in North Kingstown. The staff is friendly, the service good, and the food is excellent. One of my friends went deep sea fishing out of Narragansetts Bay and loved it enough to return two weeks later. The area is pet friendly with a dog beach and dogs allowed many places including outdoor eating establishments. However, Baywoods isn't the best place to stay with a dog unless it is well trained like mine or with small children because there are too many beautiful, expensive furnishings and decorations which could be damaged. The owner is very protective of the property and expects her guests to be, too, as they should. She was around a lot. The house is a treasure. My security deposit was returned promptly.

Visiting Baywoods Lodge was like visiting an old friend. As soon as you pull in the drive, you feel as if you're home! The listing description is very accurate, but does not do justice to this lovely vacation home. The rocking chairs on the front porch are perfect for early morning coffee. The three outside decks are nicely appointed with comfortable furniture. The rear deck in particular, facing the woods, is a relaxing and peaceful retreat after long days of being tourists. The master bedroom with its adjacent sitting room and its own upper deck was the perfect place to get away for privacy. The house is laid out such that your family can be together, or you can spread out and have a little time to yourselves. The local beaches were very nice and Wickford was delightful and very welcoming with quaint shops and fine dining. The exquisite homes of Newport and the waterfront are so close by you can go back several times during your stay. If you're looking to spend time on the Rhode Island shore, Baywoods Lodge should be near the top of your list.

Everywhere I stay, the promises made is always more than the experience...except this tine, Baywoods Lodge in Saunderstown, RI is a hidden jewel! We experienced the cottage which in itself is a vacation! A wonderful cottage with a loft bedroom, lots of decking...don't forget the wildlife that will visit, cook outs on the awesome patio, full kitchen, and sunroom. Then there is the beach, being close to Jamestown and Newport, kayaking in Wickford, and using our tandem bicycle to get to places unreachable with a car...and that was just the beginning. It was romantic, exciting, and fun - fun - and more FUN. I would recommend this experience anyone who wants rest, relaxation, and excitement...all rolled into a vacation of a lifetime. AND...we loved it so much, we're doing it again in October! Hope the foliage will be there when we visit, if not, well there is plenty to do at the cottage! See you in October.

My husband and I stayed At Baywoods Lodge in early January for a long Winter break. We'd stayed in Linda's other Vacation Home, Cove Cottage, last year and were so pleased with it that we were eager to try out this new log home. It was even more beautiful, with the log walls, fireplace and antiques. And so cozy and comfortable. We hiked out to Rome Point to see the seals, walked to the beach to see the full moon rise over the bay, walked to the Italian restaurant 1 1/2 blocks away. We shopped in the quaint shops in Wickford, visited mansions in Newport, ate in small cafes in Jamestown, walked along Narragansett pier. All within 8 miles. But best of all was coming home and cooking in the kitchen (granite countertops - everything provided!) snuggling up in front of the fireplace, and sleeping in the gorgeous Master bedroom with balcony overlooking the living room. We can't wait to return in the summer to enjoy the sunroom and the huge decks and outdoor bar!

Baywoods Lodge was a much needed retreat from this chaotic past year. My husband and I had a fabulous time in our gorgeous, luxurious hideaway! Although there was a lot to do in the surrounding areas we opted to enjoy our time in the lodge. We played games by the fire, watched movies on the flat screen and cooked amazing meals in a better kitchen than we have at home. Our hostess Linda, could not have been lovelier. She was there for every detail of our trip. Thank you, We will definitely be back soon!

                  Year Purchased: 2009

About the owner: We are a mother and daughter who love to travel, but like to relax and enjoy life, too. While on the international executive circuit for a large company, our family lived in nine countries and visited over 50. In the process we spent years in resorts, hotels and furnished short term-rentals. So, we’ve come to know what we think makes the perfect vacation rental.

                  Why the Owner Chose Saunderstown:
We chose Saunderstown, and this gorgeous log home in particular, because we like to be in the middle of everything – historic sites, good food in lovely settings, beautiful natural scenery, shopping. We also like to be near enough to the sea to swim, boat, or sit on the shore and watch the waves. Then we want to be able to return to quiet, picturesque surroundings and relax or cook in our comfortable, yet unique and luxurious home. All without driving more than 10 minutes.

The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
We’ve created the vacation or executive rental homes of your dreams. Great views. Cozy, sumptuously decorated with rugs, art and antiques from our world travels, yet with comfy seating, restful mattresses and state-of-the-art kitchen. With every amenity provided. In an oasis of calm right in the middle of things.
