We stayed a week as a family of five (two adults, three kids) and really enjoyed the place. Our main criteria when selecting a place to stay are (1) privacy from surrounding homes, and (2) a beautiful view. We've rented four VRBO places (Vermont, PA, VA, and this one) and this was tied for first among those, with the edge going to this one since it was closer to home and most affordable. The house is situated right atop a long ridge in the ridge-and-valley region of WV, with views both front and back. We had plenty of room for sleeping and activities. Only downside worth mentioning is the very limited availability of food and drink. Referring to groceries here -- we didn't explore the restaurant scene, which the guestbook suggested was nice. About 25 minutes from a convenience store, and 45 minutes to a real grocery (we didn't go, basing this on the guestbook comments). We brought all our own food, so this didn't matter (except for the inevitable few things we forgot), but something to keep in mind if you rent this wonderful place. A++

Our stay at the Lost River Cabin was one of the nicest getaways we've ever had. The cabin was adorable and we loved the fireplace and the new stone wall. The cabin was very clean and well maintained and the owners had a nice stock of common cooking necessities like salt, pepper, flour, spices and condiments. That was a really convenient touch as the cabin is quite isolated - which we loved. We stayed 3 nights and I only with is could have been longer. It was perfect and peaceful. Sitting out on the back porch and taking in the "silence" was extremely relaxing and the view was heavenly. I'd highly recommend the Lost River Cabin to anyone looking to get away from it all. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer home.

David and Dave's cabin is the perfect place to get away from all the pressures of everyday life. Situated on a secluded mountain top, its views are amazing. The cabin's photo ads don't accurately show its loveliness. We enjoyed creating meals in the well supplied kitchen. The shower was fantastic!! They even have a great hammock for the deck. Life was GOOD in that hammock looking out over the mountains. There are state parks nearby with great hiking trails and horseback trail riding as well as a very nice pool. Thanks David and Dave for sharing your home.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful cabin. We had an incredible time despite the unusually high temperatutes! The cabin is just as described and was very clean and had pretty much everything that we needed. We really couldn't have asked for anything more. The view from the deck is so amazing. I really didn't want to come home. There are 2 parks near the cabin that are really nice. Lots of hiking trails that we hope to hike on our next visit. (It was too hot this time...) We ate at The Guest House, The Lost River Grill and The General Store. All were very good. I highly recommend this cabin. It is everything as described and more. We are planning a return trip next year. Thanks again!

My four teenage kids and I spent a week in this beautiful, well equipped cabin. The cabin itself was gorgeous, well stocked, spacious and clean. We all had a great time playing board games, cards and putting puzzles together by the fire. The views are breathtaking! The beds in this cabin are super comfy and the bedding is top notch. Dave and David have a whole binder in the cabin with information in it on local activities. We were able to find everywhere we wanted to go with no problem. The wifi was a big hit with my kids and their iPhones and also allowed me to put out some "fires" at work while away. :) I work six days a week and could not ask for a more relaxing and rejuvenating week! Thanks to Dave and David for sharing their little piece of heaven with us. Paula, Ram?n, Anthony, Jazmyn and Alex

Owner response: Paula, Ramon, Anthony, Jazmyn and Alex, We are so glad you had a relaxing and fun week up in Lost River. We don't get to use the cabin as much as we would like, so it's always great to hear that others enjoy it as much as we do! It has become our touchstone for relaxation and rejuvenation, so it's wonderful to hear that you were able to take advantage of the escape to recharge and unwind. All our best, Dave & David

My husband and I had a fantastic time at Lost River Cabin. Peaceful, relaxing, and secluded, the cabin and scenery are every bit as beautiful as the pictures and are just as advertised. We could not have asked for a better escape. Relaxing on the deck or on the screened in porch at night after a day of hiking or sight-seeing was the perfect way to unwind. The view from the loft bedroom when we first woke in the morning was spectacular and a great way to start each day. I highly recommend this little getaway to anyone.

David and Dave's cabin was perfect for our mini relaxation getaway! It was the first cabin I came across when searching online for the best place to get away too for a relaxing weekend and I immediately loved the description, photos, etc. After continuing the search, I quickly saw how this cabin was way better then most. When my husband and I arrived, we explored inside and out and absolutely loved how cozy, comfortable, inviting, clean and bright it was! The decor is very warm, inviting and definitely modern. The little touches, like complimentary wine, coffee, extra food, spices, candles, dvds, books, appliances, toiletries, and so on made us feel like we were staying at a family/close friend's house. Everything was provided and setup so thoroughly to ensure a comfortable, relaxing stay with no worries. We especially enjoyed the fireplace, lounging on the deck in the warmth of the sun, surrounded by such restful sounds, and loved waking up to the sun coming in through the huge windows while sleeping upstairs in the loft. The ipod dock station was really thoughtful and in a great spot; we loved being able to hear our music throughout the entire cabin as we slowly woke up, drank coffee, and started our day. The only suggestion we had was for the blinds. It wasn't a big deal because around this time of year, there really wasn't anyone else staying in the surrounding cabins, but the blinds in areas of privacy, like the bathroom and bedrooms, were pretty much see through so at night time, someone could easily see into these rooms which could cause an insecure feeling. Also, when we were hanging out on the deck, the sight, the sounds, the air... everything was so perfect! And the only thing that came to mind that could make it even more relaxing would perhaps be adding some kind of pond or small area of water outside the cabin.Regardless, we still had such a wonderful experience! Good spots to stop at are the Lost River Brewing Co. Restaurant and Trout Pond. Thank you so much for opening up your cabin for the enjoyment of others, taking such great care of it, and putting so much thought and warmth into it! We hope to stay there again soon!

We spent 3 nights at Lost River Cabin in Feb 2012 and the experience definitely exceeded our expectations. The house and the neighborhood were so great we only drove out once in the 4 days we were there. The rest of the time was spent walking the quiet streets, relaxing, watching movies, and cooking up a storm in the great kitchen. If you are looking for a rewarding walk, we enjoyed walking down to the Guest House and having a drink. The service there was great. We really enjoyed our stay. Dave and David have done a great job with the house. Amy and Todd

Owner response: Amy & Todd, Thanks for your great feedback! Glad you visited the Guest House, we find that renters enjoy dining there or just grabbing a casual drink. Cheers, David

Wonderfully lonely existence in this time of the year without neighboring cabins occupied, almost scary at night listening to unfamiliar sounds. But the cabin is warm and inviting and the fireplace a absolute essential element of the cabin feel in winter. Dave and Dave should give each other a two headed rain shower for their birthday is about the only thing I could suggest to make it complete. Thanks for the coffee and wine

I LOVED this place! I stayed here for a week for an all-stops-out writing project, Just me and my two dogs. We walked along the ridge in the early morning, as the full moon was setting. I cooked great meals in the well-appointed kitchen. Slept like a baby in the utter peace and solitude. And worked my tail off with an inspirational fire ablaze in the fireplace. I've rented through homeaway.com for two decades -- in this country and overseas -- and this sweet home is as lovely as any I've rented. The views are amazing, of course (just look at those pictures!). (NOTE: One of my pooches had an "issue" that involved an emergency trip up the mountain by the owners' maintenance man -- who was fast and kind and competent! -- just an aside, not that you would expect any trouble in this beautifully maintained home . . . but it's nice to know you're not "alone," when you ARE alone.) I loved this place in winter -- and can only IMAGINE how delightful it is in summer, spring and fall.

What a retreat! Lost River Cabin is the perfect getaway. Dave and David have made sure to think of everything. We arrived to a bottle of wine and a bag of coffee (much needed after the bottle of wine...) and a comfortable home to relax in. We were absolutely comfortable! We cooked in most nights and found everything we needed with the pots & pans and pantry items. The loft bedroom was amazingly comfortable and waking up to the sunrises each morning was a real treat! The surrounding area is great, we went for long walks through the "neighborhood" with our dog, explored the Lost River State Park, drove down to Mooresville, took hundreds of pictures, really, truly relaxed. We plan on coming back to Lost River Cabin many more times, hopefully in different seasons to really enjoy all the views that we can. Thank you D&D for an amazing vacation! Much Love, Daniel & Kimmy

Dave & David's home is absolutely beautiful. As other reviewers have said, the photos truly don't do it justice. The views (especially from the decks and the master bedroom) were wonderful, and the interior is so beautifully decorated! D&D have thought of everything - fantastic board games, great books, a fun movie collection, an incredibly well-stocked kitchen, a hammock for the deck, putting together a comprehensive guide to the area, etc. etc. etc. We would have happily stayed another week! The Lost River Valley was also wonderful - great hiking at the National Forests (where there's also access to a pool, tennis courts, horseback riding), a small lake nearby for swimming, beautiful views, and total peace and quiet. I truly cannot say enough good things and hope to return again.

Lost River Cabin provided a wonderful base for relaxing in beautiful mountain scenery. We had a lovely time in this very well-appointed and comfortable cabin. While the cabin itself had everything we might want, sitting out on the decking was the icing on the cake. During the day we relaxed watching beautiful birds and butterflies and at night we enjoyed star gazing. We were furnished with very clear directions for getting to the cabin. Dave and David were really helpful in advance of our visit. To be honest, we didn't do anything around the area but we were provided with information about a range of things we could do. We'd definitely recommend Lost River Cabin to anyone looking to get way from it all in beautiful surroundings.

Lost River Cabin was the perfect place for a retreat with friends and family. We loved the views, the deck, the screen porch, cozy interior, and comfortable rooms. We stayed in late July during one of the area's hottest weeks, but it still cooled down at night and we slept well. The owners provided great service from start to finish; you can see that they care a lot about the guests' experience. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing week or weekend getaway. We plan to go back in the fall or winter and enjoy watching the seasonal views from the cabin.

We just completed our stay at Dave’s and David’s cabin (6/26/11-7/1/11). The cabin is very well maintained, with an updated bath (nice rain shower!!!), well stocked kitchen (which we made great use of), large deck with wonderful views (I can only imagine the fall foliage - must be spectacular), clean comfortable beds and large living room with plenty of seating. Additional amenities include wood burning fireplace, outside private balcony/deck from loft bedroom, great WIFI internet (worked flawlessly) and cool screen-in porch. Overall, a fantastic value for an enjoyable get away. I would not hesitate to plan a future visit

Lost River, WV is a hidden unspoiled gem outside DC. It has all the charm that weekend vacationers seek in the Shenendoah without the high traffic of visitors! We spend multiple weekends a year in the area, however had never stayed at David's cabin. Thus, we decided switch it up a little bit and relax at a different cabin. This quaint home is perfectly located at the top of the mountain (Toms Knob Approach) overlooking the valley. You can't ask for a better location or better view. After a long day of hiking in the Lost River State Park, we could not be happier coming back to the bathroom that included a rain shower! Yes!!!!! A recently renovated modern bathroom with proper hot and cold water, high-end tile, restoration hardware vanity / accents, and rain shower! Just lovely! Thus, we will be returning soon and this will be our new place to hide away in lost river! :) Enjoy!

My husband and I stayed at the Lost River Cabin for a weekend to celebrate our first anniversary with another couple and our three dogs. The cabin and area were beautiful - the pictures don't do it justice! Everything was cozy, clean, and beautifully decorated. One thing to keep in mind if looking to rent this cabin with dogs... the spiral staircase leading to the loft master bedroom is very narrow, and was difficult for our dogs to climb safely. There is also no door at the top of the stairs to prevent a dog from trying to make the steep descent from the bedroom during the night. Not a problem for the humans in our group to go up and down though, and it didn't put a damper on our trip. We enjoyed cooking in the well-stocked kitchen, grilling out on the deck, walking the dogs through the neighborhood, and relaxing by the fireplace in the evenings. We would absolutely recommend Lost River Cabin to others. We had a great time and can't wait to go back. Thanks so much Dave & David!

Very homey cabin. Love the decorating. Could use some towel racks in the bathroom and a dresser or use of a closet in the lower bedroom, stayed in that bedroom so the dogs wouldn't cry all night. Our dogs loved the long walks, but the muscles in my legs didn't:)...way too out of shape. Ordered take out from the Guest House, had the Wild Mushroom Ravoli's, very, very good. Stopped by the Lost River Store, loved that, ladies are very nice. Hated to leave, Sunday was the best day out of the three. Would like to stay again but for a longer time, go see some of the sites. This is a lovingly tended and beautifully decorated home on top a mountain and overlooking a lush valley. We came to escape work, etc., and did it thoroughly and completely - spending nights star-gazing and days fishing at a nearby lake in the George Washington National Forest. The home is very clean and has all kinds of amenities -- including kitchen tools for serious cooks, Internet service, and AT&T cellphone service. If you need TV, bring your own DVDs though -- we loved having no TV, but that might not be to everyone's taste. The owners also have a fabulous collection of books and magazines available. (The owners also leave a small guestbook and have small photos of themselves in the living room, making the experience seem somewhat like you've already made friends you don't yet know.) We stayed at the home in high August - the heat of the season - and didn't miss the AC; the home has overhead and portable fans to keep you very cool, and the breezes on top the mountain are heavenly. There are two bedrooms - one up a circular metal staircase and one on the first floor. We weren't anxious to climb stairs (one of us was recovering from a broken ankle) so we used the bedroom on the first floor. The bathroom is on the main floor too, which means you can make this home a one-story experience if you like. We loved it - hope you do too.

It would be impossible to fully describe how beautiful the setting is for this cabin and how comfortable it was to stay here. My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves and we would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a comfortable and secluded get away. The place was exactly as described - well equipped, very clean, very comfortable, and very easy to move around in. The beds were great. We really enjoyed watching the beautiful sunrises from the balcony. If anything, I would say that the owners' description was a little on the modest side. We hope to come back for a longer stay. We made good use of the fully-equipped kitchen, including the wonderful pots, preferring to cook most of our meals at the cabin. We did some hiking at Lost River State Park and as we are from Toronto, we made a day trip to Harper's Ferry to visit the national park and the battle grounds (Bolivar Heights). We highly recommend the Whole Foods store in Pittsburgh for anyone coming from the North West for stocking up. Marilyn and Alex from Toronto

We are outdoorsy people; and as such really enjoyed the area. Between the hiking trails, canoe opportunities and the beach, we had a very good time. We would recommend this property very much to families looking to get away from the big city for a relaxing vacation.

My wife and I have stayed at the Lost River Cabin twice. Once for a week in August 2009, and then again for a three night weekend in July 2010. From the very first day of our first visit, we were immediately enthralled with the isolated location, the commanding view of the mountains from the HUGE deck, and the cozy interior of the cabin. Our days were spent reading on the deck, grilling out, watching for passing deer, and going for short walks along the cabin road (which offers beautiful views in places in almost every direction). Since the cabin is situated atop a narrow ridge at least 1,000 feet (probably closer to 2,000 feet) above sea level, you really get the sense you are in the clouds. And, in fact, often times we experienced clouds pass right by us on the deck, and lots of fog, and low hanging clouds. Don't worry about hot temperatures in the Summer. We were there when heat waves were impacting DC, but who would know? In the mornings it easily dropped to the 50s, and the high temperature struggled to reach 80F most days. Both summers, we were treated to several dramatic thunderstorms - there's nothing like observing cloud-to-ground lightning hitting the mountains and valley right in front of you! On clear nights, the sky is awash with stars and constellations, shooting stars and passing satellites. With our shortwave radio, we picked up all sorts of fascinating music ranging from appalachian folk songs to bluegrass, country western and big band jazz. There's usually a lovely fresh breeze that passes through the open windows of the cabin during the day, which keeps the cabin cool in the summer. We did a lot of baking and cooking in the kitchen, and found it well equipped. My wife and I frequently reminisce about our vacations at Lost River Cabin. It is probably the only place that we've gone that has offered the opportunity to fully escape human noise and stress. You'll truly notice long moments in the middle of the day with no engine noise and no airplanes flying overhead --- only you and the sound of the wind blowing over the mountain. The last day of our second visit, my wife and I were sitting on the covered porch and it was time to check-out. A lone bluebird was sitting on a branch and singing. The wind was softly blowing through the porch and it was so peaceful and tranquil and we were so refreshed we didn't want to leave. We promised each other we'd return to the cabin as soon as possible. Grant and Suzanne

This cabin was extremely comfortable and well equipped. Our stay was wonderful and gave us a chance to focus on just relaxing from our normal hectic pace. The view is breath taking and make sure to bring your telescope since the moon, stars and planets are very clear. Overall we would like to return for another vacation

Lost River is such a beautiful area and the cabin boasts spectacular views!! I just loved the sunrise and sunsets. Compared to many other areas i had been to in the shenandoah valley, this place was a gem. We enjoyed taking walks outside and sitting on the deck. It was cold when we were there but that did not stop us! The kitchen is well equipped for a comfortable stay complete with a nice coffee maker and griddle. A minor downside was that we did find the beds in the rooms a bit small. I would highly reccomend it and will be back again!

Owner response: Thanks so much for the wonderful review! I'm so glad you all had a great time and enjoyed yourselves up in Lost River - you are welcome back to Lost River Cabin any time! Thanks also for the note about the beds - as reference for future travelers, the two beds are standard queen (in the loft) and standard double (in the 2nd bedroom). If you are used to a King or a California King, they definitely are more cozy! :-)

The quiet and cozy Lost River Cabin was the perfect setting to rest, recuperate, and reconnect with my husband. The cabin is outfitted with everything you could possibly need, and truly felt like a home away from home. Fun adventures included hiking at Lost River State Park, a visit to Smokehole Taverns, and dinner at the Guest House where we were treated like a King and Queen. We would recommend this cabin to anyone needing a break from it all. We can't wait to go back!

Our stay at Lost River Cabin was the best vacation we have ever had!! The awesome views, comfort and beauty of the cabin was much much more than I expected. The owners of the cabin have done a wonderful job and provide the upmost stay. My son and I enjoyed our stay and we will return!!! We have fell in love with Lost River Cabin. It is the best getaway. It is close to a lot of wonderful things to do. Caverns, Skyline Drive, Battlefields and more! We enjoyed the views and the sunrises in the morning. We loved that we could enjoy the local wildlife as well from the birds, the opposum on the porch the night we arrived to the deer walking on the property. My husband drove up for a few days and someone who is not fond of the mountains has now a newfound love for them because of Lost River. He loved the views and the peace and quite that it offers you. He is already wanting to plan another getaway back. I have been telling everyone I know about Lost River Cabin and I hope that they will go and plan a awesome vacation to this wonderful place. You can not go wrong!! Thanks so much David for a wonderful stay!!!!!

I met my parents halfway from Nashville and me from New York..it was a great Thanksgiving getaway. The cabin was clean warm and cozy.(the bedding was just like home) They had everything one would need to enjoy a peaceful week. We prepared a wonderful meal for Thanksgiving and they had every baking dish, pan and let's not forget wine glasses to create a feastive feast. We watched movies, read books and talked the night away. We took deep breaths and enjoyed the view in the morning, walked during the day and lounged at night. Bella (my dog) loved sitting out on the deck all day... Thanks for a great time! We will be back

We stayed for 3 days and greatly enjoyed listening to the crows squabble while watching the sun rise over the mountains (aided by the timer-enabled coffee maker). Some rental places can be sparse but this one felt like a home. The kitchen had just about everything one could want: coffee grinder, meat thermometer, cookie sheets, bisquick, tea, general spices, olive oil, even backup pasta if one were to arrive unprepared. The only thing we couldn't find (oddly) were measuring spoons but perhaps not everyone bakes while on holiday. (Look under the stove for the bbq tools.) The living room had a bird guide, a tree guide, binoculars and a spotting scope. The beds had great linens.

Owner response: So glad you enjoyed your time up at the Lost River Cabin, and appreciate the feedback on the measuring spoons. We will add a set to the kitchen inventory for future guests.

the house is very nice, clean and well stocked. The beds are comfortable and the linens are perfect. The view is great and the deck comfortable. the house is close to both lost river state park and trout pond national forrest area which both have great hiking as well we cooked every meal in and so we needed extra kitchen linens which we brought. The house is built for men or tall women..the kitchen sink and bathroom mirror are clearly for the 5'8''+ crowd...a very small inconvenience in an otherwise perfect mountain home

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Owner response: Thanks for the great review and tip on mirror positions! For future renters, we have installed a 2nd mirror in the guest bedroom that is lower on the wall. For those interested in the hiking mentioned in this review, please feel free to check out Lost River State Park and Trout Pond State Park. We have been to this cabin a few times - with kids, without kids, with dogs, without dogs and always have a relaxing and fun time! It is a joy to sit on the deck with a cup of tea and just enjoy the view! Hiking in the state park is fun and the road cycling is amazing. (nice warmup in the valley before hitting the hills!) In the evening - the the cozy living room has the perfect board/card game coffee table. We will come back again for sure.

This is the best cabin for a quiet getaway!!! My sister and I loved it!!! Everything was just perfect...beautiful cabin, awesome views and all at a great price....we couldn't have asked for anything more. The owners are so nice and easy to work with, they have everything there that you could need, and lots of info regarding the surrounding area. We needed a place to go and relax, and this was just the ticket......Oh and a great reading selection (I forgot my books:( , but no worries there.) Claim the loft bedroom, the views in the morning are fantastic. Oh and the bedding....hello...so, so comfy ....hummm....I think I might need to come back soon.....Thanks for everything.....Donna Rahe

I've stayed at this cabin a few times, with my last visit in April 2009. I loved being able to breathe in the fresh air and relax in the quiet peace of Lost River! I spent many hours on the deck reading, while enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. The living room area is also very cozy - comfy couches and a wonderful fireplace that's perfect for keeping warm on chilly spring nights. Bring your hiking boots and enjoy morning hikes or sunset strolls along the ridge. Kitchen is well-stocked with pots, pans, glasses, etc. - never went hunting for a necessary utensil that we couldn't find, which can be frustrating while you're cooking! We also had a lovely dinner at the Lost River Inn at the bottom of the ridge. This Lost River cabin is one of my favorite getaway destinations!

This is a beautiful cabin for a getaway!! Very secluded, private location. The view from the sundeck can not be captured with photos. We basked in the fall sunshine and watched the golden eagles soar over our heads. The cabin is well appointed. It is stocked with everything we needed ..... it was a pleasure to not worry about taking things with us. The bottle of wine provided was a welcome surprise!! We enjoyed a hot cup of coffee every morning. You won't believe the view of the stars at night!! Spectacular ..... to see what we miss living around city lights. We also highly recommend visiting the Guest House at Lost River!! It is on the way up the mountain. We took a tour with Tammy during the day. Later, we had a wonderful dinner after drinks in the beautiful bar. The owners and all the guests we met there were fantastic. Thanks again for sharing your cabin!! We can not wait to come back. If you want to get away from it all, spend time soaking in crisp mountain air, stargaze on the deck with a glass of wine, sleep in downy beds and wake up to an array of outdoor activities, this is the place for you. Plenty of room for a group of friends to relax and dine; cozy enough for a couple to enjoy the wood-burning fireplace and other amenities. Beautiful restaurant located down the country road where you can stop in for a cocktail, or opt for someone else to cook you a feast to remember. Classic country store at the bottom of the mountain where sandwiches can be made to order for a day tromping through the wilderness. Wineries, festivals and more always underway. Don't turn down an opportunity to visit this very comfortable cabin in the woods. You won't regret it!
