The Captain’s House is a landmark, waterfront, Chester property, built in the early 1800's by the settler, Rev. John Secomb. The historic, seaside village of Chester is the jewel of Nova Scotia’s south shore, with 180 degree views of Mahone Bay and its many islands. This stately, three story home was later bought by retired Captain James Allen. For much of the 20th century, the Captain’s House was well known as a restaurant and inn. Currently, the redecorated house is available as your home away from home, while touring this stunning region of the Atlantic coastline.

From the Captain’s House, sip your coffee and watch the sun rise in the Front Harbour. At the end of the day, savoir a cocktail from your own bar, and watch the sun sink to rest in the Back Harbour. Minutes away, in the village centre, you can enjoy live theatre, art, shopping, cafes and fine dining. On Sunday evenings, the air perfumed by roses, the sailboats bobbing gently, relax on your flagstone patio, and listen to a summer time concert, from the historic Chester bandstand.

Spectacular ocean views of Mahone Bay and islands. The Captain’s House is steps from the Chester Yacht Club, an active racing club. The highlight of the summer season is Chester Race Week, the largest keel-boat regatta in Atlantic Canada, held in mid August. The surrounding waters, dotted with sailboats, attest to that. Also steps to Peninsula Road, ocean on one side, century summer homes on the other, the perfect start to your daily walk. Located at the start of Peninsular Rd, is Freda’s Beach, and the Lido, a salt water swimming pool.

Chester lies between Halifax (a vibrant, historical, university city, 45 minutes away), and Lunenburg (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 30 minutes away). Located on the Lighthouse Route, the Captain’s House is conveniently located to explore natural wonders like towering tides of the Bay of Fundy, hiking and biking trails, birding, whale watching, sailing, kayaking, golf , tennis, and building sand castles. History abounds from Canadian beginnings, French Acadian culture, to Victorian architecture. Halifax offers live theatre, Symphony Nova Scotia, a hill top fortress with historical re-enactments, gourmet restaurants, tours, shopping, gallery hopping, and six universities. All within an hour of your home, The Captain’s House.

We could not have been happier to stay and hold our wedding at the Captain's House in July 2012. It was a magical place with loads of room for everyone and a fantastic kitchen for lobster boils. This place will stay in our fond memories for years. Highly recommended...

About the owner: We are urbanites who love to escape to the peace of the countryside. Chester is an historic village surrounded by the deep blue Atlantic Ocean, and a necklace of islands. At the Captain's House, relaxation will wash over you like the sighing of the sea beyond your windows. Our children spent their summers in Chester, sailing, cycling, beach combing, making art and participating in children's theater. Now they hang out with dear old mum and dad on the local ocean front golf course. The spaciousness of the Captains House, and the variety beyond its doors, will keep you all entertained, but above all - rested. Carol and Colin, Halifax, NS.
