Jamestown, Rhode Island is New England's best kept secret. And what better way to discover it than with another family (or two) in our spacious, bright, Victorian home. The house sits on a high bank over a large front lawn, ideal for badminton or croquet. From the spacious covered front porch you can sit in comfort and watch the panorama of Narragansett Bay: the colorful spinnakers of regatta sailboats racing down wind, the towering sails of the 12 meter boats from bygone America’s Cup races, and ferries on their way to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard. In front of you is the quaint Conanicut Marina, and the main street of Jamestown village is a mere block away. A mile north, the Newport Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in New England, soars over the bay, glittering lights at night, connecting Jamestown to historic Newport with its famed colonial architecture and turn-of-the-century mansions.
A short walk from the small-town charm of Jamestown’s shops, galleries, excellent restaurants (including a fantastic brick oven bakery,) children's playground, and local library, the house’s location also provides an easy drive to the public beach, a local glass blower's shop (and demonstrations), and even watercolor lessons at nearby Watson's Farm. Or you can leave your car behind and catch the ferry to historic Newport from the village.
This middle house of the historic “Three Sisters” Victorian-style homes is ideal for a two or three-family shared vacation or a family reunion. With easy access to the village, tweens and teenagers alike can be independent, leaving you to luxuriate on the front porch. And with a protected, large front lawn, the younger children can run amok while staying in view.

Climbing and picnicking on scenic rocks at south end of island called Beavertail
Year Purchased: 1960
About the owner: I live in South Orange, New Jersey with my husband and two children. I work as a film and photo researcher. I own the home in Jamestown, RI with my two sisters and brother.
Why the Owner Chose Jamestown: My parents bought this three story 'cottage' in 1960. They were visiting old family friends, had no intention of buying anything there, but fell in love with the island and found the perfect house. While the island has been discovered for its natural beauty on Narragansett Bay and close proximity to historic Newport, it still maintains a wonderful small town feel. While there are wonderful restaurants, beautiful walks, excellent shops and recreation, there is never a sense of crowding. Local residents are friendly and happy to share the island's fascinating history with all comers.
The Unique Benefits at this House: A wonderfully spacious, light, airy house that feels cozy like a home; a front porch that you may never want to leave; a 3 minute walk to shops, restaurants, and boats (and ferry to Newport.) Plus an enclosed outdoor shower for those who like to stay under the stars!
