Great House if you Surf
Great House if you Surf

My boys and I, age 14 and 15, stayed in the house for ten days in August. The location is great and very convenient to surf spots, bike trails, the wharf and amusement park. We walked and rode our bikes everywhere! The house is very pretty, all white, and nicely renovated. The pool and hot tub were wonderful for us after surfing, but as an FYI, the pool is always partially shaded and only feels warm after you have been in the cold ocean. The roof top deck was great in the evenings for sunset. The beach towels and linens provided were very nice, and the kitchen stove, sink and fridge are very high end, but glassware and cookware was minimal. There were no wine glasses :( A couple of things about the neighborhood: The house next door is a rental (there are actually quite a few in that immediate area) and on our last weekend a VERY large group of fraternity brothers rented the house. Needless to say, they stayed up all night drinking, talking loudly, grilling at 5AM and an actual fight broke out one afternoon as the boys and I were returning from a bike ride. The driveway is shared, and the small bedroom is on that side of the house, making it very loud for whomever has that room. Also, the house two doors down, not a rental, has recently been court ordered by the City of Santa Cruz for the residents to stop maintaining a drug house. All in all we had a good stay. I would be careful with young children, or anyone who may be offended or frightened by party behavior, and accept that you may have less than desirable neighbors. We stayed busy surfing, riding bikes, and hiking, so were not at the house very much. Rich was great to work with, and booking was simple and direct. Make sure to get the tax rate and cleaning fees upfront, they were a lot higher than I expected.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers.
Owner response: This was an interesting guest. She wanted to come back, but I have better guests and options to rent to. The "party" next door only lasted about on hour, as I have my property manager available to monitor such things. She lives 2 doors down, has lived on the street for over 20 years, and has raised 3 children. She would never have allowed this to go on all night. Pool is solar heated, it stays about 85 degrees during the summer, but one must cover it each evening, as the maritime air will cool it down. Apparently this guest did not cover the pool. The house 2 doors down has a new owner as of March 2013. She is wonderful, has lived on this street before, and wanted to come back!! Manor Place is a quiet, family orientated neighborhood.

We rented this house for week. The location is perfect, a short walk to Cowell and Main Beach, the boardwalk and Steamer Lane. Its set back about a block from the ocean. There's abundant street parking without any permits which is a plus. The hot tub, pool and roof deck are all great features. The house is well equipped inside with a great living room, kitchen and bedrooms. The owner and property manager were all great to deal with and I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great VRBO property in Santa Cruz.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had the pleasure of renting this house for a month in mid-summer. The location is wonderful for going to the beach, surfing, kayaking, bicycling, hitting the Boardwalk, or just enjoying the walk along the ocean bluff. The back yard is great for entertaining children and adults, with a substantial, comfortable pool, a very nice hot tub, a built-in picnic table, a mobile fire pit, and two barbecues, one gas and one charcoal (the largest barbecue I have ever seen). There is also a heater outside on the deck, for taking the chill off the evening air. The interior of the house is comfortable, and the layout is particularly good for families. The owner and manager were a pleasure to deal with.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children.

We rented this beautiful home when we were in Santa Cruz to celebrate our son's graduation from UCSC. The location is excellent, walking distance to the pier and boardwalk and an easy drive to campus. We really enjoyed walking the short distance to Cowells Beach to watch the surfers. The house is beautifully decorated, the beds and bedding are so comfortable, there are flat screen TVs everywhere! The master suite is spacious and comfortable with french doors to the pool and yard. The family room is a great hang out at the end of the day. The kitchen is well equipped and the gas range and large refrigerator were fabulous. Best of all, the weather was unseasonably warm when we were there but the house stayed very cool thanks to the beautiful plantation shutters everywhere. The pool not only helped cool things off, but it was the focal point of our weekend. We put the large BBQ grill to good use, and enjoyed the roof-top deck while watching the sunset or having coffee early in the morning. There is plenty of street parking if you have extra cars. The owners were delightful to work with. We highly recommend this property.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/7

About the owner: Barbara Carey is a mother, businesswoman, inventor, entrepreneur and author. As an inventor and entrepreneur she has brought more than 100 products to market, launched seven companies, and been awarded more than a dozen patents. But when you visit Barbara in her modest offices in Orinda, CA – you would never guess that this jeans and t-shirt clad woman made $40M in 14 months with her invention of Hairagami®, a very popular hair accessory that has been sold worldwide in 37 countries as well as on QVC Network. Nor would you guess that she is currently in the mascara race going up against the “big boys” of the cosmetic industry. Everything about Barbara exudes warmth, confidence and a large dose of fun. It is not uncommon to hear her break out into peals of laughter as she discovers the latest YouTube video that sparks an idea for a new marketing campaign. But don’t mistake her fun-loving personality for someone who isn’t serious about her business. She is one of the toughest retail negotiators you’ll meet. Barbara embraced entrepreneurship at an early age, selling metal social security cards door-to-door at the age of 9 (she was attracted to the advertisement’s promise of “financial independence”), and again at the age of 23 – when she drove across the country to make what would be her first sale to K-Mart, with only a handmade prototype living off a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread. Barbara has been described as smart, sassy, creative, optimistic, tenacious, unwilling to fail, and a knock-out. Barbara’s story is one that inspires and encourages women of all ages as well as entrepreneurs and inventors.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
Our personal family vacation home now available to the public! We have enjoyed this home for many years with our son Richie and his friends. Our son is now grown and living out of state. Our home sits empty for many weeks, and we feel it's better to have a family in the house and enjoying all it has to offer.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Walk 100 steps to Cowells famous surf beach, Lighthouse Field and Steamer's Lane surf spot is a short walk down the street. 5 minute walk to the fabulous Santa Cruz Board Walk. We designed this vacation rental to have all the luxuries we enjoy on vacation. We wanted it to be very different than our main home which we are also renting out (listing #279987) We paid particular attention to the luxury Hotel linens and all the furniture was custom designed to create a 'Beach Chic' experience. There is no other vacation rental home like this little piece of paradise.
