Location: Lake Wenatchee, North Central Cascades, Washington State, USA (half way between Steven's Pass and Leavenworth) View Map
Accommodations: Cabin, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths (Sleeps 10-12)
Built in 1901 by some of the earliest settlers in the Lake Wenatchee valley, this unique log home has been lovingly owned and maintained by their direct descendants ever since. All the hand built charm and rustic beauty are intact, but now coupled with amenities such as electricity (1920s) indoor plumbing (1940s) and high speed, fiber optic, wi-fi (2008). Most recently, we've remodeled the kitchen/dining area to a more open floor plan, and the downstairs bath just because⦠well, it really needed it. And we added a hot tub. Aahhhhhh.
The homestead occupies 15 private, peaceful acres and is a destination of its own, or a fabulous base camp for the area's many outdoor activities. It's only 25 minutes to either Steven's Pass or Leavenworth. Without even getting back in the car, you can cross country ski, snow shoe, sled, hike, bike, mountain climb and horseback ride (bring your own horse). There are chickens laying eggs for your breakfast, and our horses grazing in the pastures.
The house is furnished with an eclectic mix of comfy antiques, many of which have been here for generations. It easily acommodates two familes (2 king beds, 2 doubles, and a full finished attic with 2 twins plus lots of sleeping mats and sofas so all the kids can crash.) When you settle in for that second cup of tea, you know you're nestled in walls constructed of virgin timber and built by hand without electricity or fossil fuel. The cozy feel of the house takes you away from the cares of modern life, and back to a simpler time.
The Brown Family Homestead is the perfect place to get away from it all and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones. Make it your second home, but without the headaches of ownership.

Greetings from the mountains! I'm Karen Dickinson, and I consider myself lucky to be this generation's custodian of the old homestead. It's truly a special place, offering a direct link to another time, and another way of life. I'm committed to its preservation and to sharing it with the wider world. I hope to develop an on-going relationship with a few families, probably from Seattle, who want to make the farm a regular part of their lives. As I am living just 1/2 mile down the road, I will be on hand to personally get you settled in and make sure your stay is a wonderful experience. Wanna learn how to preserve peaches? hear about the best trails and the hidden berry patches? swap stories about horse riding wrecks? learn how to get the eggs from under a sitting hen without getting pecked? Call me and we'll talk about having you up. My family and I look forward to getting to know you and yours. Cheers, Karen

No kids, men or pets...lots of wine, great food and the best atmosphere you could ask for. This place is just magical. We have done several girls long weekends in a variety of places and by far this was our best experience. Karen and her family are just wonderful and you couldn't ask for more in terms of location and beauty. Loved the horse, chickens, cat and even the chipmunk that tried to join us. The kitchen is well stocked and that dining room table was the hub of our stay. We vowed never to go to the same place twice, but we all agree that some vows are meant to be broken!

We recently stayed a week at the Brown Family Farm. The stay was absolutely wonderful! We were warm and cozy in the cabin while the snow fell outside. The kids loved getting fresh eggs from the hen house, and feeding the horses grass. Our friends enjoyed the visiting neighborhood dog so much that they wanted to take her home. The kids wanted eggs everyday for breakfast - which was a nice change of pace from Pop Tarts and sugary cereal! We made big family dinners and enjoyed much lively conversation. The kids enjoyed Netflix each night, and a computer with internet made it easy for the adults to keep up with email and such. We streamed music from Pandora and enjoyed just relaxing together. There was plenty of space - and everything one could need was provided. A special treat? Our puppy was able to enjoy the vacation with us! We will definitely be back!

Going to "The Farm" is one of our favorite things to do! It is so comfortable, peaceful, beautiful...I could just go on and on. There are so many things to do in the area and Leavenworth and Stevens are just 30 minutes away. Karen is a wonderful hostess...We love "The Farm"!

I just wanted to send a quick note to thank you for sharing your family's home with us, Karen! We had a wonderful stay, and were really sorry to leave! The kitchen was fantastic and it was fun to have room to host friends for dinner. Thanks for the recommendation of the See-n-Ski trail. We towed the kids one day and enjoyed the sunshine on the river. The kids loved the sledding hill and bringing the horses treats, and built a rather impressive series of forts in the attic space. Hank the dog was threatening to stay, too. We'd love to come back in the summer.

We had a fabulous couples weekend at the Brown Family Farm, while researching the venue for our upcoming wedding. The farmhouse was warm and cozy with plenty of room to spread out, and the property was beautiful, even covered in snow. :) Our dogs enjoyed playing in the snow, discovering the horses and the chickens. All of us have nothing but rave reviews for the house, the farm, the area and the owner (Karen). I know our wedding will be exactly as I had envisioned it. Karen is creating a wonderful space for everyone to enjoy.

Karen, Thank you for the use of the Homestead. We had a delightful relaxing time. The house had plenty of room for the coming and going of various children/grandchildren and the privacy and quiet was incredible. Getting to bring our various dogs was great - it made it so much easier for everyone to gather without dog-sitting worries. We hiked, kayaked, read, and sat in the hot tub. The house had everything we needed and we enjoyed having a big kitchen/eating area to cook and gather in. We packed quite reluctantly to return home. My husband and I were pleased to get a chance to visit with your father and hear the history of the area and the Homestead. Thank you again for everything. You were the easiest person I've ever worked with in the VRBO network. We are hoping to return another time.

The Brown Family Farm is a lovely getaway. We loved the history, the comfort of the home and amenities, having lots of space to stretch out, and especially the setting and views. A great place to bring kids--two young ones in our party loved running around on the property, feeding grass to the horses and leftover veggies to the chickens, and gathering eggs. Looking out the kitchen window at the lawn, horses running in the lower field, and up the mountain was my happy place. The kitchen is very well-equipped, and the two bathrooms are updated and very nice. There's a great attic space for extra running around space for the kids (though lots of stairs to watch for small ones). The stars at night were fantastic, away from the city lights. Don't come expecting easy lake access from the property, but the state park a couple miles down the road has a fantastic view up the lake with high mountains on either side, a lovely swimming beach, and a playground. It's only two hours from Seattle (though a longer return through Monroe traffic on the way back), and Karen and her family were very welcoming. I came back wanting to recruit friends and family to join us for future weekends. A really happy spot.

This property is very sweet and comfortable. It's also very kid friendly. You are close to Lake Wentachee but not on the water (and therefore can send kids out to play). I think I need another couple of weeks there to fully relax. It's not meant to be the Hilton, it's an 130 year old log home. Having said that, the kitchen is awesome, the bathrooms are modern, the beds are SO comfortable (and I'm fussy). So the 130 year old part is the charm, not the comfort. Big comfy dining table, wifi, woo! The owner is completely lovely. We had 7 people and definitely didn't fill up the space (5 adults, 2 kids). Farm fresh eggs from the chickens, horses to pet, nice easy hiking trails (for the whole family) close by. It's kind of the family cabin that you don't have to pay the mortgage on. The drive is super easy from Seattle, and I could see being there in any season. The only potential accessibility negative is a steep staircase to the bedrooms. For most people it would be fine.

My husband and I visited the Brown Family Farm with four other couples (and a baby) to get out of Seattle for a weekend, and we all had an amazing time! Everything was so easy (including "checking in" and out) and the house was incredibly well stocked. The owner answered all of my questions in a timely manner and went above and beyond what was expected. We had originally planned on spending a lot of time in the town of Leavenworth since it is so accessible, but we ended up spending almost all of our time at the house because there was something for everyone to do there. The morning started with plucking fresh eggs from the chicken coop and feeding the horses carrots (both optional activities), and then we'd all pitched in to make coffee and brunch. Then some of us were able to find a place to go snowshoeing within walking distance, meanwhile others chose to go on a relaxing walk around the lake with our dogs or stay in and read or watch movies. There are also many great hiking trails nearby. At night, we played board games, made appetizers and dinner, created a bonfire with the already cut wood, and went in the outdoor hot tub (there were even extra towels to accommodate for this and a washer and drier). The house has modern amenities (e.g. high speed internet and DVD player) as well as old world charm. You can see snowy mountains off in the distance, even though it was sunny and warm while we were there, and there is a whimsical tree house on the sprawling land. You can also see the original home where the Brown family lived. Combined, it is hard for this place not to bring out the inner child in you. It was easy to forget all of our worries from our daily routines and settle nicely into Brown Family Farm living. My husband and I both travel a lot, and this was one of the most fun, relaxing weekends away we have ever had. This was both due to the good company and because the house is so charming that you are automatically in a good mood. We will definitely go back!
