Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2003
Lyn Striegel was born in Canada and now lives and works in North Beach, Maryland. She has devoted herself to painting since she was very young. The joy she felt as a youngster in creating on canvas remains today. From age 10, she went to painting lessons weekly. At 16, she moved with her family to Arizona where the desert colors shaped her vision and she continued college-level studies in fine art. By age 21, she had her own studio, studied with David Smith, the sculptor, and continued fine arts classes at Iowa State University. While attending college in Canada she was a pupil of H. Marshall McLuhan, considered one of the visionaries of the effects of technology on the brain. It was McLuhan who coined the term “the global village” and “the wired world”. At 30, Lyn made a career change to law and pursued legal studies and practice in the Washington DC area, but continued to paint and attend classes at the Corcoran. She continues to practice law and paint, a seeming contradiction, but as she says “law practice is not a term of art, it is art.” And, “art feeds the soul.” Her work has been shown at the French Embassy and at galleries in Iowa, Canada and the U.S. and is in many private collections. She is represented at Seascapes in North Beach, Maryland. Lyn’s current exploration into color, shape and movement defines her view of art today. The viewer determines the subject. The art paints itself. The artist intercedes minimally to achieve balance and surprise. The medium is the message.

Just spent a couple of days relaxing at Heron's Rest Guest Cottage with my husband. The cottage is charming and very comfortable. It is also immaculate. There were some very nice amenities we've never found in a rental before - two kinds of coffee provided, laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner in the shower, etc. It really is walking distance to all the local attractions that North Beach has to offer. The Bay, restaurants, cute shops, a convenience store, etc. Recommend Blondie's for breakfast, lunch, and/or terrific pastries. Nearby elegant dining at the Westlawn Inn, more casual food to be found at Sweet Sue's. Nice antique store on 7th Street. We didn't get to the nearby water park but it looked like fun. The owner was extremely helpful and cordial. I would recommend Heron's Rest without hesitation.

My husband and I booked Heron's Rest Guest Cottage for a 3 night get-away, July 12-14th, 2011. While the exterior of the cottage was indeed charming, it is tucked between an empty commercial property and a few private homes, as well as a 4-5 story tall condo building. It IS only 1/2 block to the beach/ boardwalk but the only real view is from a small upstairs window. The property was not well maintained nor was it clean. Grease was all over the walls in the kitchenette "closet" and the shower curtain was covered in mildew. There was toothpaste spatter on the mirror, left behind from prior guests...just to name a few problems. The only "real" bed is a full that is extremely hard with very loud box springs. We spent a sleepless night on the sofa and love seat in the entry room. Inspite of a strict no refund policy, we chose to stay elsewhere the remainder of our 4 day trip. The owner and property manager were very pleasant and responsive to our complaints and did go and replace the shower curtain and re-clean, etc. as well as offer to have us back for a complimentary stay in the fall. However, the bed, location, etc. are simply standard to the property and not what we find acceptable. Opinions are subjective, and everyone has different expectations. The cottage has a guest book that has several pages filled with prior guests favorable impressions. While I would not recommend Heron's Rest to a friend, North Beach/Chesapeake Beach is a lovely little area, and an easy drive from DC. The little bakery, Blondies, is a don't miss. The Railroad Museum is a great place to see the history of the boardwalk area. While North Beach seemed to be more of a hang-out for loud teens, we found Breezy Point Beach to be less populated and more family friendly. We took a great day trip down to Solomon to visit the Mariners Museum and The Sculpture Gardens.

We had a captivating birthday celebration for our son at your cottage. He couldn't say enough about the scallops at Neptune's, and we'll ride the trolley tomorrow. He found a shark's tooth on North Beach and was very happy about that. We caught a family concert in the evening with ice cream on the pier . . . a perfect stay.

What a surprise special welcome - the beautiful card and gorgeous red roses. And the lovely, charming cottage to match, enhanced by original artwork. Enjoyed each day from sunrise to sunset. We couldn't have asked for a nicer setting "to celebrate the life we've made together" (a wonderful 50th anniversary gift from our daughters).
