What a perfect beach cottage! Loved the boardwalk and the beach. Found shark's teeth, watched the Osprey feed their young, the jelly fish, the ducks and their ducklings that would come so close, the waterpark which we had never seen before. Blondies for breakfast was divine! The cupcakes are yummy! We had wonderful side trips to Calvert Cliffs and DC. The paintings in the cottage are fabulous and perfect for a cozy beach experience. We all had a different favorite but agreed that they were all very cool. My favorite experience was the sunrise on the front porch looking at the glistening bay with a cup of coffee - that I shall truly miss. Thank you again for everything and we shall be back. P.S. Found some great beach rocks to make Christmas ornaments so we will always have our vacation with us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We celebrated our 2nd anniversary here at Heron's Rest last year and this year just had to return for our 3rd! Only this time with our 6 mo. old son. We had just as much fun here as a family of 3 as we did as a couple and hope to return again. Of course, we all enjoyed Blondies!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

What a cute place to vacation! A nice, quiet out of the way area that is a real gem! We enjoyed our stay - our 3 children were with us and we had plenty of room. We enjoyed the beach and a trip to Mt. Vernon, an hour away. We will definitely want to come visit North Beach again in the future.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

What a lovely way to spend Father's Day weekend with our two young boys (3 yrs. and 5 mos.) . . . with breakfast from Blondies on the patio or boardwalk, daily excursions down to the beach (perfect size, and not too crowded even on the weekend) and all the great local events (Friday night Farmer's Market, Cruise-In, and Eat, Drink, Go local events, both with great live music on the boardwalk). The accommodations and convenience of Heron's Rest to everything was perfect for a family of 4 . . . Our Family Weekend Adventure was awesome and our 3 year old has asked us many times if we can KEEP THIS HOUSE. We will be back.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were so lucky to have found this perfect beach bungalow - perfect for a few days relaxation after the week in DC. We loved the steamed shrimp from the shop which we ate every night on the deck out front with a glass or two of wine. Great position for the beach and a lovely touch to have the free breakfasts from Blondies . . .Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much for a lovely weekend. We loved eating breakfast on the deck with a view of the Bay. Being able to walk a block to the beach is so convenient and I enjoyed an early morning swim today before packing up. We also enjoyed walking through the town and looking at the cute shops. This was a wonderful Memorial Day and we look forward to coming back next summer.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Just spent a couple of days relaxing at Heron's Rest Guest Cottage with my husband. The cottage is charming and very comfortable. It is also immaculate. There were some very nice amenities we've never found in a rental before - two kinds of coffee provided, laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner in the shower, etc. It really is walking distance to all the local attractions that North Beach has to offer. The Bay, restaurants, cute shops, a convenience store, etc. Recommend Blondie's for breakfast, lunch, and/or terrific pastries. Nearby elegant dining at the Westlawn Inn, more casual food to be found at Sweet Sue's. Nice antique store on 7th Street. We didn't get to the nearby water park but it looked like fun. The owner was extremely helpful and cordial. I would recommend Heron's Rest without hesitation.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I booked Heron's Rest Guest Cottage for a 3 night get-away, July 12-14th, 2011. While the exterior of the cottage was indeed charming, it is tucked between an empty commercial property and a few private homes, as well as a 4-5 story tall condo building. It IS only 1/2 block to the beach/ boardwalk but the only real view is from a small upstairs window. The property was not well maintained nor was it clean. Grease was all over the walls in the kitchenette "closet" and the shower curtain was covered in mildew. There was toothpaste spatter on the mirror, left behind from prior guests...just to name a few problems. The only "real" bed is a full that is extremely hard with very loud box springs. We spent a sleepless night on the sofa and love seat in the entry room. Inspite of a strict no refund policy, we chose to stay elsewhere the remainder of our 4 day trip. The owner and property manager were very pleasant and responsive to our complaints and did go and replace the shower curtain and re-clean, etc. as well as offer to have us back for a complimentary stay in the fall. However, the bed, location, etc. are simply standard to the property and not what we find acceptable. Opinions are subjective, and everyone has different expectations. The cottage has a guest book that has several pages filled with prior guests favorable impressions. While I would not recommend Heron's Rest to a friend, North Beach/Chesapeake Beach is a lovely little area, and an easy drive from DC. The little bakery, Blondies, is a don't miss. The Railroad Museum is a great place to see the history of the boardwalk area. While North Beach seemed to be more of a hang-out for loud teens, we found Breezy Point Beach to be less populated and more family friendly. We took a great day trip down to Solomon to visit the Mariners Museum and The Sculpture Gardens.Owner response: For our new guests, we have replaced the bed upstairs with a new queen mattress. We also provide a queen sleep sofa in the living room. We cannot do anything about the location, which is 1/2 block from the Chesapeake Bay and the boardwalk, but this is the first complaint of this kind we have had. We appreciate the fact that this guest did enjy the amenities that North Beach/Chesapeake Beach/Solomon's Island had to offer.

About the owner: Lyn Striegel was born in Canada and now lives and works in North Beach, Maryland. She has devoted herself to painting since she was very young. The joy she felt as a youngster in creating on canvas remains today. From age 10, she went to painting lessons weekly. At 16, she moved with her family to Arizona where the desert colors shaped her vision and she continued college-level studies in fine art. By age 21, she had her own studio, studied with David Smith, the sculptor, and continued fine arts classes at Iowa State University. While attending college in Canada she was a pupil of H. Marshall McLuhan, considered one of the visionaries of the effects of technology on the brain. It was McLuhan who coined the term “the global village” and “the wired world”. At 30, Lyn made a career change to law and pursued legal studies and practice in the Washington DC area, but continued to paint and attend classes at the Corcoran. She continues to practice law and paint, a seeming contradiction, but as she says “law practice is not a term of art, it is art.” And, “art feeds the soul.” Her work has been shown at the French Embassy and at galleries in Iowa, Canada and the U.S. and is in many private collections. She is represented at Seascapes in North Beach, Maryland. Lyn’s current exploration into color, shape and movement defines her view of art today. The viewer determines the subject. The art paints itself. The artist intercedes minimally to achieve balance and surprise. The medium is the message.
