Location: Terlingua, Big Bend Country, Texas, USA (Approximately 25 Mile from Terlingua) View Map
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)
Dos Corazones Ranch (Spanish for "Two Hearts"), with its unique buildings and scenery is the ideal getaway - serene and tranquil, it evokes the West of a hundred years ago. The main adobe house in the style of an old Chihuahuan hacienda and a second adobe house (not accessible to guests) used as an office/studio sits on 30 acres of land and is situated 10 miles along the main paved road into Terlingua Ranch Lodge.
The desert mountain scenery is stunning, the wildlife abundant and the area one of tranquil beauty. The night skies provide some of the best stargazing in the northern hemisphere. The quiet is amazing. This small ranch must not only be seen, but felt.
MAIN HOUSE:
The main house features a living room with fireplace. On one side two large picture windows provide unobstructed views of the magnificent Corazónes East and West Mountains, on the other side the front door opens onto a three sided courtyard featuring a fountain and a sitting area to enjoy the view of the Rosillos Mountains to the east. The living room features large vigas and faux latilla ceiling.
Flowing though from the living room is a study with large built-in floor to ceiling bookshelves, an alacena for additional books, a large entertainment center and a desk looking onto the Corazónes.
The kitchen/dining room shares the living room fireplace. The room is open plan with a dining area and a large center kitchen island with large cabinets and a seating area with 3 bar chairs. Conveniences include a large refrigerator, antique school sink, oven and separate gas/electric hob. Cabinetry is custom made of aged distressed alder. The ceiling is very old Texas long-leaf yellow pine, a rare wood. Faucets are old copper and brass fittings from South Africa, as are the exposed plumbing features in the showers and the bath tub (decoration only).
The master bedroom with fireplace (decorative only) looks onto the Rosillos. The ceiling is pecky cedar as is the master bath.
The master bathroom is en suite and features a fireplace (decorative only) and a Victorian slipper tub (decoration only) looking out a large picture window onto the Corazónes. A large shower with hanging plants opens onto an enclosed courtyard. The room features an antique Moroccan window with decorative bar-work.
The guest bedroom has a corner fireplace (decorative only). The ceiling is in the same Texas long leaf yellow pine as in the kitchen. The guest en suite bathroom has a shower.
On the south side, facing the Corazónes Mountains, is a flagstone verandah/rock garden with desert landscaping. This verandah provides perfect evening lounging and adjoins an area with a table and chairs for dining out near a built in barbecue fireplace.
All interior floors are tiled in Italian ceramic tiles except the floor by front door, which is tiled in distressed Saltillo. All rooms feature large vigas and high wooden ceilings and ceiling fans. The house is cooled and heated by two heat pump systems, though the adobe construction provides sufficient insulation to require minimal heating and cooling.
The house, though remodeled in 2003, is designed and antiqued to look like an old hacienda. Many of the exterior and all of the interior doors are antiques from Mexico or Morocco and either mesquite or pine. Door hardware is mostly from a hand forge in a South African Living Museum.
WATER
Both houses are used for water catchment with containers able to store 19,500 gallons of rainwater, which is run through a separate pumphouse. The rainwater has been tested and is free of bacteria and heavy metals or other pollutants. It is excellent for drinking after passing through a small filter system. The property also shares in a well which is used for gardens and the small adobe building. Water in the second building (not accessible to guest) and outside faucets is not potable.
Water is very precious so conserving water is essential.
