Hodgson Lumpkin House
As you drive onto The Hill (common name for the location of houses) one of the first houses you come to is the picturesque Hodgson Lumpkin House, commonly known as the A&D House. The Plantation Plain style 2 story home is the most recent addition to The Hill but one of the oldest to Athens. The house was constructed in 1801 on Oconee Street, just past downtown Athens, GA. In the late 20th century the building had fallen into disrepair and was only used as storage for the owner. As a bicentennial project in 2001, the Epting’s took on the task of moving it to its current location and restoring this home to its original splendor. A full length screened in back porch was added for those perfect evenings on a rocking chair with a good book. The interior is completely furnished with period antiques and includes 3 bedrooms (2 queen beds and 2 twin beds, 2 twin air mattresses), 3 full baths, a living room, dining room, den, and kitchen.
Two other rental houses are on the same property. Each can be rented separately or together and can be used for special events such as weddings for up to 400 guests.

My family had the pleasure of staying here for my niece's wedding in Feb. 2011. There were six of us and we thoroughly enjoyed the spacious and well decorated bedrooms -- with three FULL baths. It was the perfect house to host the wedding after-party. The well appointed dining room, family room and living room (all with fireplaces) allowed us to visit with out of town family members without being crowded and it truly felt like our own "house" for the two nights we were there. I would love to spend a Thanksgiving with family here it is such a homey place!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

The home exceeded our expectations ~ it was wonderful!! Beautifully decorated with antique furniture, secluded on The Hill, but just minutes from downtown Athens. The home was clean and well-maintained & Abby was extremely wonderful to work with in scheduling our trip. We had a fabulous time and would definitely stay again, if ever again in the Athens area. I would recommend this property to anyone traveling thru the Athens area. Amazing!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

About the owner: A native Athenian, Lee Epting has influenced and helped shape the local community for decades. His catering business began with Lee, one cook, and one bartender and has expanded in its inception as Epting Events with over seventy-five employees today. Lee’s major outside interest is Historic Preservation and he has served as a Trustee for the Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation while moving and restoring fourteen historic homes in and around Athens. Eight houses comprise what is known as The Hill. The latest venture has been the opening of Harry’s Pig Shop – a "more than BBQ" restaurant in Athens, GA. He and son Ashley were Executive Producers on the feature film "Not Since You" which was filmed on the Epting property called, The Hill.
