Enjoy a relaxing stay at HALE HAPUU ii (the Tree Fern Cottage)...a nature lovers' retreat in a botanical garden setting. Stay in a comfortable newly restored hunting cottage from the original 4500 acre ranch. The hapuu ii is a rare native giant tree fern growing on this special property. The one bedroom cottage is surrounded by manicured lawns and gardens and is ideal for a couple or someone wanting quiet and solitude. It is located in a very private six acre setting on the edge of a tropical Forest Preserve yet convenient to many nearby beaches and all the Big Island has to offer. Access is fully paved with secure automatic gated entry. Experience refreshing cool mornings. Sleep soundly with cool nights and warm sunny days.
View sunsets and moonlight on the ocean from your own large and private covered lanai, as well as some coastal views all the way to Kailua, through massive forest primeval trees. The home is surrounded by ancient forest and centuries old trees and huge tree ferns. The flowering native trees (red and the more rare yellow and orange Ohia) are home to many varieties of colorful and rare native birds that will greet you each morning and put you to sleep at night.
Only one mile down to the highway or two miles to sea level and unique black 'Pebble Beach' for snorkeling, kayaking and dolphin and whale sightings (whales in winter months). The cottage is convenient to all the Big Island has to offer and there are many different and outstanding beaches nearby within a ten to twenty minute drive. They include Honomolino Beach and nature walk (a black sand beach), Hookena Beach Park (a salt and pepper sand beach offering snorkeling and kayak rentals, concession stand, lots of sun or shade and famous for spinner dolphin sightings), historic Place of Refuge National Park (with excellent snorkeling, tide pools, grills and picnic tables under palm trees and many Hawaiian cultural displays, old royal canoe landing, ancient walls and dating from the 1500's) and very pristine Kealakekua Bay Marine Preserve (for more great snorkeling or kayak rentals). It is also centered in the heart of ranches, coffee and macadamia nut farms and mills, country stores and stands offering locally grown fruit and produce. Also nearby are the old Painted Church (wall murals), Hawaiian Ethnobotanical Garden and a wonderful ornate Buddhist Temple open to visitors. There is also a great variety of restaurant options (pizza, Chinese, Mexican, gourmet, deli sandwiches for beach take-out etc.) a short drive away. Or it is an easy drive into 'downtown' Kailua-Kona for extensive shopping, dining, movie theaters, fishing, boat harbor and night life. Volcanoes National Park is a short day trip to the south.
The newly restored home boasts tile and hardwood floors and a fully equipped kitchen with stainless appliances (no dishwasher). Everything you need is provided in the kitchen as well as all linens and beach supplies (cooler, chairs, towels). There is a large living/dining area. The large separate bedroom has it's own lanai entrance and plush top queen bed. Rental also includes: Free wireless internet access, Sat TV and DVD/stereo, ceilings fans, tub/shower, parking (a 150' walk to the cottage). It is always advised to be prepared on the Big Island with warm clothing and for rain. Sorry, no smoking indoors and not suitable for small children. Accommodates two. Checks or credit cards accepted (through PayPal). Four night minimum stay and fully refundable security deposit. Charming (remote controlled) gas fireplace operated seasonally.

Arriving in the dark, after a long flight from a cold climate, made what we were to wake up to that much more magnificent - the lush tropical beauty of such a well attended to land - the glass windows surrounding this fairytale tree top home made the feel as heavenly inside and out. Just walking around the gardens feels like I'm in a piece of art! We have enjoyed our stay so much, wish it could be longer!!! It has been very meditative and romantic for us - my husband could not have given me a greater gift for my 50th birthday! We will be back some day! Thank you Dennis.Did you find this review helpful? The house is perfect for a couple trying to relax and get away from it all. There is a wonderful lanai you can relax on. Quiet and peaceful , clean very calming , beautiful gardens and great host ..... But don't plan on doing any business dealings using internet , it is lousy tv & radio is 15 years behind the times and due to elevation cottage is damp , great owners and is you want to relax you will love it perfect to readRecommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Basically the whole point of the Tree Fern Cottage experience is the complete quiet and the lush tropical gardens affording a very relaxing stay. We caution that if the windows are left open while away for the day it can rain and thus get a little damp. The wireless was recently strengthened. These particular guests live on the Big island and stayed in the cottage while work was done on their house, so were trying to run their business as well. No one else has seemed, or mentioned, having a problem and my laptop always has good reception at the cottage. There is basic TV and radio and the average short term visitor would hopefully like to retreat somewhat from other artificial forms of entertainment.

I have an affinity for the relaxed atmosphere of the big island. I have never been disappointed visiting it, and this trip was no exception. Well, maybe it was an exception because this trip quickly became the top of my recent trips because my fiancé and I chose to get married on the island and to stay at the Tree Fern cottage instead of some busy resort. The drive to the property is fun! Hwy 11 is a fun road to take on night or day. Once you get to the gate, you will drive up the private road to the property, and you might just see the local Turkeys there too. The property is a mint condition. Dennis has paid careful attention to every detail. You can tell by just opening the kitchen drawers to note that every cutting utensil has been neatly placed in there. The grounds are beautifully well kept. The cottage has a beautiful lanai that looks brand new. While the big island provides some excellent views, this place amplifies it because of its surroundings. The forest that the property lays against is nice and lush, and in the early morning, you will hear the birds chirp, which I guess could be considered annoying by some, but we loved the early morning symphony. It was a much better wakeup call than a radio alarm. Since the Tree Fern cottage is near the Kona coffee belt, you can wake up early, roll down your car windows and take a ride down the road (Oh, you will see neighbors walking in the early morning, be sure to wave at them). You will smell the coffee beans being roasted, and if you’re in the mood, you can always stop by one of the nearby plantations, and get a cup of fresh coffee too! After a long day of trekking, hiking, snorkeling, horseback riding, ATVing, kayaking and simply absorbing the beautiful Hawaii sun and weather, we could not have imagined a better suited place to retreat to than the Tree Fern Cottage. We had a fun ten day Wedding/Honeymoon trip there, and we thank Dennis for providing us with a wonderful cottage to stay at. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, sightseeing.

The Tern Fern Cottage was just as described and the pictures trigger our attention. We were looking for a very quiet and remote place with simplicity and charm in it's setting. That is exactly what we found and and much more. The cottage is perfect for a real getaway and peaceful retreat. The property is immaculately maintained and beautifully landscaped. Owner was very helpful both over the email and in person. He pointed out activities like hiking, swimming an dining, all near by and splendid. The sunsets on the deck were magnificent. The light breeze was very welcome. We were sad to leave and eager to return.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

This was our first time coming to Big Island and we were so excited to see a new island. Compared to Maui and Oahu, the visual scenery on Big Island cannot be beat. The vegetation is so lush and LARGE and everywhere...we chose this cottage as it looked so peaceful and private in the pictures. It is everything you can think of and MORE in person. The cottage is very large and has an amazing view of the greenery and ocean. We loved hearing the sounds of crickets and birds throughout the day...it felt like we were in our own little hideaway above the clouds. The bed was the comfiest I have slept on and the kitchen was well stocked. Dennis was very easy to deal with and gave us our space at all times. His yard is an absolute oasis with the most stunning plants and trees surrounding every little corner you can think of. We stayed for 4 days and enjoyed every bit of it. A few points of caution...there are many winding roads and very deep/steep cliffs so DRIVE SLOWLY...this area is very vegetarian friendly and caters to those who are vegan. Try REBELS KITCHEN For huge portions of food at cheap prices, and be sure to visit the MACADAMIA NUT AND COFFEE FARM for the best tasting mac nuts you will ever find between the islands. The temperature gets quite cool in the mornings (mid 60s) but does warm up to high 70s by the daytime...the weather was not on our side when we arrived as we had many clouds and heavy rain showers, but the sheer beauty of the island will make you forgive the weather gods!! My husband and I would definitely come back to this cottage again...it was a ways out from any shops but a welcome relief to have a quiet home with only the sounds of nature keeping us company. This really is my favorite spot on the planet! Thanks Dennis!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

This cottage is nothing less than everyones idea of Paradise. The vibrant colors of the gardens come to life on their own. There is a sense of peace and a hint of magic staying at this cottage. The unit itself is very private , clean and extremely well stocked. Dennis does a wonderful job of keeping up the property and caring for all of the scenery. For our first visit to Kona, we feel very blessed to have been a part of this beautiful environment. Four days was not long enough. Our stay was a little slice of heaven and we will make a return back to this cottage soon. Best wishes to Dennis and all those who are lucky enough to stay here.Did you find this review helpful? Mahalo Dennis, We had a really good time at the Tree Fern Cottage. Having been to the islands before, I was quite surprised at how clean and pest free the cottage was. We really enjoyed the landscaping, especially the varieties of Ti plants. Waking up to the birds was a real treat, I even got to see some of the native red honeycreepers in the early hours in the Ohia trees. Thank you so much for the stay! Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook:
The cottage is located in a very pristine area of rare native plants and birds, yet convenient to everything, and offers complete quiet and peace. It has one of the largest concentrations of rare native tree fern varieties. They only grow 1' per year and some are 20' tall! There are limited hiking trails or roadways to explore the area on foot.
It is also the perfect climate and away from traffic making it easy to explore all parts of the island.
