Our family cottage, Keewaydin, was built in 1908, and has been continuously enjoyed by 5 generations of our family. The architecture, featuring an open living room facing directly up to the rafters, with a balcony running along two sides of the second story, was designed by Washington DC architect Frank Bibb.
In 2004 , a total renovation of the cottage was undertaken with the goal of not only preserving it for future generations by modernizing the interior, but restoring the gardens and grounds, including the original entrance, reconstructed from photographs. In addition to the amenities we have itemized, the cottage has a double screened in porch where we often take our meals. Across the road is the only private beach in the Colony, owned by us and one other family. You can keep your row boat, kayak, canoe or sailfish tied up there.
The cottage is located in Haven Colony, also known as Center Harbor, the location of Anne River Siddons' novel 'Colony.' The Center Harbor Yacht Club, which includes more small boats than yachts, keeps a running schedule of boating events for young and old alike. The Club's tennis court is steps from our door. But for those seeking R+R and a respite from human society, all you need is the house and the beach.
All the glories of Down East Maine are nearby: Deer Isle 20 miles; Castine 30 miles; Acadia National Park 60 miles. Our cottage does not have internet access but the internet is available at the Brooklin Library, 1 mile from the cottage. The cottage is a retreat in one of the most glorious places in the world. We offer it for just a few weeks when it is at its finest.
