We are a young group of seven from different parts of the U.S. and we visited Montezuma at the beginning of April. Chez Mu made the trip across the bay well worth it. From the minute we made contact with Eric the process was extremely easy. He guided us right through the booking process, answered all questions we had promptly, and made the vacation great. Chez Mu is everything you see in the pictures. Great views from the awesome pool. Full kitchen set up. Short drive or 1/2 mile walk from town. Cleaning lady was very nice and mindful. The wild life was abundant, we even saw a couple monkeys in the trees above the house. We strongly recommend this house. We had the same concerns you do, we didn't want to be ripped off by the internet scammers. You never really know what you're getting until you get there. But this place is the real deal. And making the payments was straight forward with no hassles or issues. It slept seven of us comfortably, and it would've slept eight easily. Thanks for everything, Eric. This was an awesome vacation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My wife and our 3 kids (6 years, 3 years and 1 years) stayed for a week and loved the villa and the whole Montezuma experience. The place was as advertised on the website and through e-mail conversations with the owner, except that the washer didn't work, but the cleaner who lives in the house below the Villa was happy to do a load of laundry when ever we asked and we tipped her a little something extra. The external doors didn't lock, but with the safes in each room for valuables we felt perfectly comfortable, especially that the gardener/cleaner couple lived in the house below the villa and were always around. A house book is provided by the owner which is loaded with lots of directions, local information and recommendations on restaurants - the information was very accurate and useful. We had a GPS map purchased through one of the links in the house book - and using the coordinates provided by the owner it was no issue finding the villa even after dark. We enjoyed the Montezuma waterfalls, Curu Wild life park, Cabo Blanco wild life park (look up Gerald at cabo blanco travelers.com his tour booth is downtown Montezuma, he was an awesome tour guide and great with the kids), horse back riding (again Gerald hooked us up with a private family horseback riding our) Tortouga Island and touring Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. We would use this villa again and definitely stay in Montezuma again - there are many excellent restaurants.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Decent house with a great view. Nearby staff limits privacy. I got an ear infection in both ears after swimming in the pool, and suspect it may have been from the lack of sanitizer. PROS --Great view. --Nice outdoor eating and deck area. --Well stocked with cookware, dishes, etc. --The house comes with a printed guide to Montezuma, including maps and details on restaurants, activities, etc. --Staff is very friendly. CONS --Water pressure and hot water were intermittent. --Washer and dryer were non-functioning, and not hooked up (although the staff volunteered to do laundry for us). --Exterior doors did not lock (there were three safes to store valuables). --The internet access is very slow, not at all "high speed". --Staff is very close by, living in a house just below Chez Mu. They do not speak any English. They come by frequently when you are away from the house (rather than at a specific fixed time every day). --I got an ear infection in both ears on the last day of my visit. We checked the pool with the test strips in the house, and they came up blank for chlorine/bromine sanitizer. When the pool sanitation issue was brought up with the owner, he said that they do everything "by the book".Owner response: We appreciate all feedback from our guests. We aim to continuously improve the villa, as the partners David, Luis and I also use the house very often with our families and friends. Between October 2012 and January 2013 we invested in significant upgrades to the house addressing all of Jonathan's concerns, and many more improvements: - We installed a new water pump system for higher pressure and more constant hot water. We also now also have a private well, so unlike most of Malpais, Sta Teresa and Montezuma, we have a reliable source of fresh water especially in the very dry season - We have installed a new rail system for the terrace doors, and changed all locks. We also have solar-powered motion-activated flood lights in the exterior, and of course the digital safety boxes in each bedroom. These are just precautions, as luckily the area continues to be extremely safe. - The Internet service was not properly programmed. We’ve upgraded the router, and now have a reliable 1.5 Mbit/s connection. A free Skype phone is also available. - The housekeepers typically do the cleaning when guests head out to the beach. If you have a specific time you would like them to come by, just let them know. - The pool continues to function perfectly. Jonathan was unfortunate to visit in May 2012, when there was an unusual “red tide” contamination off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Local newspapers warned of the potential irritation to skin, ears, throat and eyes. Please look up the report in La Nacion on April 4th, 2012, available at the web site: nacion.com/2012-04-05/AldeaGlobal Also among the many other improvements: marble floors throughout the house (including anti-slip in the terrace), bathrooms totally redone, electrical system upgrades, etc.

Chez Mu is truly amazing! We stayed there for 4 nights and did not regret it. The views are breathtaking. You feel completely secluded from everything. Our group of 7 fit perfectly in the house, having plenty of privacy among us. One thing that was a bit difficult is the housekeeper only spoke spanish, so at times it was a bit of a cluster to figure things out, but nothing google translate can't fix. It is up a steep hill so walking to and from town is difficult. We would call a taxi, costing us about $10 a time. The best thing about the place is the openness and the pool. You will not regret staying here!! Eric is a pleasure to work with and is very reliable.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We had a fantastic time at Chez Mu - a lovely house in a fab location that was totally perfect for our family break away!! I loved watching the sun go down from the hammock - i have bought one to bring home to try to recreate the moment in our British Summer ha ha! The pool, the view, the beds, the outside living area - all absolutley fabulous. Bearing in mind we are quite fussy and have high expectations there was very little we could fault!.........however for some constructive advice i have the following; The dishwasher didn't work and didnt seem to have been working for a while - would have been good if it had worked Quite a few of the plastic glasses could do with replacing as they were either cracked and leaked or were just generally overused. My sister and her boyfriend were in the small upstairs bedroom with 2 single beds and it did smell quite damp, needed airing a bit more regularly as was better towards the end of the week. and that is probably it, so as i said we are picky and these are really small complaints but if it were my house i would want to know!......so i hope you find it useful. We tried the Italian restaurant recommended which was great, also the one which was the best in Montezuma (on the beach) - twice and delicious again so some great recommendations in the fantasically informative house manual. Very steep and bumpy roads to get around the area a 4x4 is recommended so pleased i read some of the other reviews and followed suit. If you stay here you will be hard pressed not to have a brillian break away!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Chez mu is fantastic! We stayed here for one month and enjoyed every minute. It has all the amenities that you will need. It is secluded enough for privacy but also close enough to town. The deck and pool are great. Everything you need for a great vacation. We had a medical emergency while we were there and the owners were wonderful to us. They kept in contact with us just in case we needed anything. They made us feel less stressed and confident that everything was taken care of. Even came to the hospital to check on us. made a difficult situation much easier. We highly recommend Chez Mu and will be returning next year. Absolutely a 10! We had a wonderful stay at Chez Mu during the last week of March 2011. The house is very nice and the layout between the kitchen, living room, deck, and pool is incredible. It feels like one big open room. The patio area is great with a part of it having a covered kitchen table large enough to accomodate 8 people. You can eat dinner and look at the ocean or stars depending on the time of day. The house is surrounded by a large wooded area where we saw monkeys from the property!! It is also a bird lovers paradise with all different types of birds fluttering around. There are butterflies everywhere as well. The house is built into a hill which is actually really nice because when you are on the patio you are level with the tree tops. Feels like you are in an adult sized tree house! Infinity pool is also very nice for cooling off on a hot day. Montezuma is also a great little town with lots of good restaurants. Overall a wonderful house / area, the only thing is you DEFINITELY need a 4 x 4 because the roads are unpaved and steep all over the Nicoya Peninsula. Definitely would reccomend the house / area and would love to go back again. Amazing beaches within a 10 minute drive with very few people on them too!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

What can I say? Truly a magical vacation. Our group of 8 stayed at Chez Mu for our wedding week in Montezuma. My husband and I had our wedding reception on the beautiful deck. We could not have picked a better place! The house is spacious with a great kitchen and the view is incredible. The infiniti pool was a great hit with the kids. The rooms were very comfortable & well air conditioned. We LOVED the house keeper; Judith & her family, they were so attentive to our needs & went above & beyond to make our wedding so special. A 4X4 rental is an absolute must due to the steap & bumpy road conditions of the area. We loved Chez Mu & would definitely stay there again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We're very proud that Lisa and Tom chose our villa in Montezuma for such a wonderful occasion. The main deck around the pool was filled with tropical flowers, with a live band and a reception for over 20 guests. One of my partners in the house also had their honeymoon there the year before, so if this keeps up we'll have to rename it "Chez Amour"! :)

my husband and I stayed at chez mu with 2 other couples and loved every second. the location is amazing (so close to town, walking distance to zip lining and atv's). It was so beautiful and the housekeeper and grounds keeper were awesome. the view is incredible - you really feel off the map. it was the perfect balance of lounging and going on adventures. It was totally comfortable, cozy and clean. restaurants in town are fantastic and there is a great farmers market on saturdays. seriously the best vacation we have taken in a while. We loved it and are trying to plan another trip there asap!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at this "villa" June 2010. It was amazing I highly recommend this place. You definitely need 4x4 drive to get up the driveway the last 100+ft. I recommend checking out the ziplines and hiking the waterfall near by. Everything was great, there are some huge bugs in Costa Rica so bring bug spray!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We just completed our visit to Chez Mu in March 2010. The photos as presented do a very nice representation of the house. The ocean view is breathtaking. The infinity pool is wonderful on a hot afternoon. We thought the kitchen was well equipped for preparing a nice meal and enjoying it on the patio overlooking the ocean. (An ice maker would be a great addition to the kitchen.) Beds were comfy with nice linens. (4 pillows per bed would have made it better.) Towels were well stocked. (face clothes were not provided.) The overseers visited each day to "freshen up" and were interested in making our stay the best it could be. They do not speak English. The property was clean and well maintained. Minuses were that we were not told that the drive up to the property is quite steep. We would recommend that you have a 4 wheel drive to reach the property. Another minus (and curiousity) is that each bathroom had a large window which made it hard to feel a sense of privacy. We were able to "rig" our own covering, but this was definitely an oddity. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Chez Mu and would recommend it as a great place to stay.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

I recently organized a group of 9 graduate students to stay at Chez Mu. We found the owners very easy to work with regarding our arrangements and the property manager very nice. The amenities are great, views are beautiful and the deck gets wonderful sun for sun-bathing. Aside from some of the rough roads in Costa Rica, we think Chez Mu is a wonderful destination for people who want to get away and enjoy a relaxing stay in sunny Costa Rica. Easy access to snorkeling, surfing and various hiking trips (but you may just want to lounge inside).Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
