Le Trayas studio description
Welcome to our studio in Le Trayas, where a gorgeous sunrise over the Mediterranean seems to be the rule and preludes a lazy, sun-drenched day under cerulean skies. Imagine breakfast on the deck with fresh coffee and croissants to fuel your sun- and fun-filled day in Provence/Cote d'Azur, the air redolent with the scent of rosemary, lavender, thyme and bayleaf.
The studio apartment is adjacent to and attached to our villa. About 40m2 with soaring ceilings and a wall of french doors to a large balcony with stunning views over the Med and the garden, it is fully equipped to provide all you need for a relaxing vacation. The kitchen has all of the utensils and appliances you could wish for, from fridge, cooktop, microwave/grill, dishwasher to tablecloths, candle-holders and wineglasses. Luxuriate in the large walk-in shower with rainhead and the large fluffy egyptian cotton towels. Double sinks, vanity and medicine cabinets with plenty of storage space, hair dryer and a washing machine complete the bathroom. The european king-size bed (160cm) is beautifully appointed with luxurious linens. Reversible heating and air conditioning keep you comfy all year round and there is plenty of onsite parking.
There are a variety of local beaches within a short walk- from sandy to rocky, from large to quite tiny and private, there is something for everyone. Hikes of all levels and lengths in the adjacent Esterels are a great way to get some exercise and enjoy some of the most stunning scenery anywhere. Mountain biking and road biking are both extremely popular here, thanks to the varied and striking terrain. A game of petanque anyone? The town hall (5 min. walk) has several courts...
Dining is one of life's pleasures here in France. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance. And the wine... unbelievably good and very inexpensive.
While having a car is preferable, we have spent most of our time here without one and have been able to enjoy most of what the area has to offer. The Le Trayas train station is serviced by 10 trains per day in either direction. The 2 buses run to Theoule/Mandelieu/Cannes in the east, and St. Raphael in the west. The train from the airport (Nice St. Augustin station, about a 15 min walk from the airport) takes less than an hour to Le Trayas.
Your private balcony is separated from the main house's private terrace by a tall screen of bamboo plants.
Detailed maps, site information, food basics, instructions for appliances, dishwasher and laundry detergent are provided.
You can find several photo albums on our facebook page- Trayas Provence.
Please note that this region is very hilly. We love it- walking anywhere is a great workout. When we come from Toronto, we fly into Nice, walk to the train, ride the train to Le Trayas, then trudge up the hill with all of our luggage. It is not easy after a long flight. We spent our first 2 years here without a car and used the buses and trains. It is definitely preferable to have a car while here- you can go anywhere, anytime and it is much easier to carry luggage and groceries.
Provence consists of 6 departments- Bouches du Rhone, Var, Alpes Maritimes, Alpes de Haute Provence, Vaucluse, Hautes Alpes. Our home is on the border between the Var and Alpes Maritimes (we are actually about 2 houses into the Var). Our bay has its own little micro-climate which happily supports plants which don't survive well just a bit further inland- lemons, oranges, cacti, bougainvillea etc. It is truly a little piece of heaven!
Keywords: Spacious, airy studio apartment in our villa, with amazing seaview, large balcony, walking distance to beaches, restaurants, store, train and bus, adjacent to Esterel hills for hiking and biking, large balcony with seaview, parking, fully equipped with kitchenette, washing machine and dishwasher. Cozy accommodation with great seaview
This studio was perfect for the two of us. We had trouble finding accommodation for just two people and didn't want to pay for a whole house. The hosts were terrific, providing information about everything we could ask for. We were in France to househunt and the location was good for us- Le Trayas is close to the towns of Theoule and Mandelieu to the east and St. Raphael and Frejus to the west. Feb. is not the best month weather-wise, but the studio was nice and warm and big enough to spend some time in. I really appreciated the heated towel bar! We had some really good days and were able to go on long walks along the coast and up into the hills- just lovely. We visited a handful of wineries recommended by Richard- so picturesque and the wine was delicious. Unfortunately, we didn't find our 'house'- maybe next time! Would definitely stay here again.

Great holiday on the French RivieraGuest comment entered by owner
Great holiday on the French Riviera
My boyfriend and I spent a fabulous week in the studio apartment. It was beautiful and comfortable and very well equipped. We really enjoyed the hiking which is right next door! The views from the hills were amazing. Speaking of views, the view from the studio and its balcony made us not want to leave. We had a car and were able to explore Provence, from St. Tropez to St.Paul de Vence and the medieval perched village of Gourdon. There is a great restaurant just down the hill, which has a really inventive approach to french cooking- loved it! The hosts were lovely- helpful and friendly and they invited us over for aperitifs one evening. We didn't have the best weather, but we did have the best time!

Studio apartment in Le Trayas
Staying at Richard's studio was absolutely amazing! The apartment has been beautifully renovated, the view is spectacular, and Richard and his wife are such great hosts. They are super helpful with tips on the area, and are very well organized with a guide folder they put together for guests! You have everything you'll need in the studio to cook and even beach stuff. The area isn't far from Cannes, and has a more comfortable relaxed feeling. I would recommend renting a car to explore all of the neighboring beaches and towns. Overall, it was an incredible vacation and I would recommend their place to anyone!

Beautiful Location and a Good Place to Relax.
Beautiful Location and a Good Place to Relax.
We were told that you could walk to and from the train station--but found this was totally unrealistic with luggage. You can walk to the bus stop and small store, but the walk back with groceries is challenging not because of the distance, but the very steep incline of the streets. We are seasoned travelers and look forward to walking in Europe, so are not unaccustomed to this expectation. A car would be necessary if you really want to use this as a home-base for investigating the area and beyond. If you don't have a car, a recommendation would be that the owners arrange for some kind of pick-up and delivery to and from the train station. A "private" patio is a huge plus for this studio as the views are truly stunning. However, we experienced owner and guests traipsing back and forth on steps that that lead down to their pool that hem the edge of the patio and french doors--eliminating the privacy claim at those moments. We ate at a local restaurant that was recommended by the owners, Jillali, and it was fabulous! Setting, staff, service, and food on par with any eating experience we have had anywhere....Europe or otherwise. We walked to beaches, restaurant, and the bus stop. Bus rides along this Corniche d'Or is a pleasant experience as the buses are very clean and well maintained and the views of the coast are amazing. We feel it is worth a mention that the requirement to pay ALL of the rental fee up front was off-putting and nothing that we had experienced in all of the many other rental we have used in Europe. Also the 500 euro damage fee was excessive. We would not agree to do this again. We would recommend this rental to those interested in a "get-away" in a residential area. There is no village of Le Trayas as it is really just a neighborhood with a small cafe and store. If you don't want to rent a car, be prepared to hike steep roads that offer beautiful views when you stop to catch your breath.

Owner response: These guests were coming from Italy, on a Sunday. Travel to us involved 5+ hours of train travel, with 3 changes. They mentioned several times that they expected they would be exhausted after such a long train trip and asked that we arrange taxi pick-up from the main town of St. Raph which is 22 km away. We obtained taxi charges and contacts for them from St. Raph and 2 other stops. I described the 15 minute walk up the hill from the train station as well. When our guests called us from the local train station to inform us of their imminent arrival, my husband immediately drove down to pick them up. Our guests spent the next day recuperating on their terrace as they were, they reported, exhausted. My husband also drove them back to the train station on their departure day. There are three routes down to the coast road from our villa- the route to the train station is the longest at 15 minutes because the hill is the least steep. In fact, it is the route the local cyclists choose to cycle up. Quite coincidentally, I went for my 'daily constitutional' about an hour before this review came in. I walked to and from the train station in 30 minutes. I was not rushing. We are in our late 50's and we walk up from the train station with all of our luggage every time we arrive here after our flight from Toronto and train ride from Nice. We enjoy the exercise after being sedentary for so long. It is an uphill walk though! The studio, which has a separate entrance, is attached to our villa so it is inevitable that we will see each other when we are here. Most of our other guests have appreciated our presence in that we are able to provide information and advice whenever it is needed. It is definitely easier to see France with a car. We state this in our ads and in our private communications with renters. We provide contact info for a reasonable car rental site we have used frequently. Without a car, one is obviously subject to the vagaries of local transit. 2012 has been our first year renting through VRBO. We read the advice given by VRBO and use their policies and templates for our contracts and damage deposit policy.
L'allure de la Cote d'Azur
L'allure de la Cote d'Azur
My wife and I stayed here for several weeks last fall. The location is spectacular and the accomodations are excellent. We had a fantastic holiday and would definitely return. We are adventurous travellers so a car was a must if we wanted to get out and see the back routes of Provence. Driving in this part of France can be a challenge for the timid but a joy if you have any latent rally cardriver genes.Public transit (bus and train) can get you anywhere up and down the Riviera and is very convenient, so a car is not a necessity. The web site photos are great but they don't let you know how really special this place is. Photos fail to capture the atmosphere of the spectacular sunrises and the panoramic views of the Mediteranean and the small harbour in the village bellow your terrace. Your hosts will be only too glad to familiarize you with the ins and outs of the Cote d'Azur. They are very approachable, helpful and informative. You really feel you have your own space. They are like next door neighbours, not inn keepers. We used the place as base for both day trips and overnight excursions. Cannes, Nice and Antibes are must see local towns that are a short train ride eastward along the coast. Don't try to see them all at once. Each deserves at least a day to explore on foot. The markets, restaurants museums, architecture and beaches are all part of the region's appeal.. One of the local highlights was a castle in la Napoulle just down the coast that was owned by an eccentric American artist named Henry Clewes. He and his wife restored it in the 1920's and now it's a museum with a fascinating history and beautiful grounds. Arles, Nimes and Avignon are worth an overnight trip if you want a taste of inland Provence. We wanted to see Marseilles and Toulon but didn't have time.. we'll have to wait till our next visit. We are active, rural retirees and did not go to veg out on a chaise, but if you are going to unwind from a hectic career in the city le Trayass is perfect for that type of holiday. Stretch out on a chaise under the palm trees with a favourite novel and you'll be in heaven. The weather was spectacular last fall... unusually hot, so a dip in the Med was another must! It rained once! There is free internet access to keep you in touch with the real world.... if you really want to. We went to France for a month, 3 weeks in le Trayas and a week to get from and back to Paris. If we did it again we would skip Paris and fly to Nice

Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: We are a couple from Toronto who have recently 'semi-retired'. Our family has always loved sports, cooking and travelling. Now that we are 'semi-retired' and our 2 sons are grown up we spend about half of the year here in the south of France and are always sorry to leave, even though we are going home to work at jobs we love. So, about half of the time, we will be here to greet you, help you with your planning, and otherwise be available. The rest of the time this will be entrusted to a propery manager.
Why the Owner Chose Le Trayas:
When it came time to semi-retire there was a conundrum. Where was the weather good, health care excellent, great food and wine easily available, the sea nearby, museums/art galleries/shopping/gorgeous towns/wineries close by? Great skiing within a couple of hours would be good too. And we hoped for a seaview. The south of France won, hands down. We feel so at home here, despite our imperfect french language skills. We hope you will too. And the view over the Mediterranean is heaven!!
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
It is quiet, peaceful and very beautiful here, yet it is very close to bustling towns, glitz if that is what you wish, history, culture, sporting activities of all kinds (swimming, hiking, biking, kayaking, boules, boating etc etc). There is the setting and the time for quiet contemplation and introspection, for reading and cooking. There is great wine and there are great chefs nearby. Provence/Cote d'Azur provides a surfeit of nourishment for the mind, the body and the soul. It is everything a vacation should be.
