Romance and enchantment combine with excitement and adventure for an enticing cocktail if you choose to stay in this little house perched up in the trees. Many of us have enduring dreams of sleeping in a treehouse, and are drawn to the intimacy of cozy spaces. Imagine yourself soaking in the fragrant cedar Jacuzzi under the starry canopy, relaxing on the two levels of verandas. Sleep in the exotic bamboo bedroom, and awake to rainbows of light bathing you through the multiple stained glass windows. Throw open the French doors and sip local Hawaiian coffee on the lanai while you watch the birds of the forest flirt. This is a playhouse for grownups.

Treehouse Accommodation
Visiting a treehouse is an adventure, so staying in one is also an adventure. When booking a stay here, please keep in mind that some agility is required to hike into the treehouse through the forest, and ascend into it. To enter the top level, you will go through a trap door. The access is through the actual forest, and the house is built over top of a lavatube, in the trees.

Eco-Stay Aspects
Mahinui Na Lani is a treehouse designed by Roderick Romero, whose work appears in the book 'Treehouses of the World'. It is built of sustainable bamboo and recycled lumber and windows from Oahu. Power is from the sun and wind, and back up by a generator. Water is the rain that falls from the sky, that is captured onsite and stored in a catchment tank, then filtered. We provide drinking water. You shower and soak in the rainwater. Bathroom includes composting toilet and handpainted copper sink.

Forests of Kilauea
The location is just outside the gates to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in a forest of giant tree ferns and towering trees. This is the same forest that you enter through the main gates of the park. Altitude is about 4000 feet. Temperatures are cool in the evenings, and damp days can also be chilly. Your explorations of the area will take you quickly to warmer and drier areas. Often there is a fine mist, called pineapple rain. One of the more fun ways to get warm (other than in the cedar hot tub) is to drive into the park and stand next to a steam vent. Volcanoes National Park has an array of extraordinary sights and adventures, including flowing lava, petroglyphs, guided tours, hiking across volcanic craters and through lava tubes, a road to the sea, and a visitor center and gallery. Volcano House, the hotel and restaurant in the park will be undergoing renovation in 2010.

Of all the places you have stayed and will stay in your life, this is one you will never, ever forget. You will be awestruck from the moment you step through the moongate. The path to the treehouse has small treasures of purple bromliialdes, or a tiki to catch your eye as you walk the path. The treehouse is beautiful with rich woods, bamboo and subtle palm leave impressions in the stucco wall. Stained glass of birds continue to bring the outside in. Everything you need it here. Kitchen, hot tub, shower, the most comfortable and cozy bed on earth. And while it is really just right there, a couple of blocks off the highway, it seems secluded, as if you are far away from everything. I saw it listed as one of the top ten most awesome places to stay in the world and I whole heartedly agree!

Owner response: Thank you so much for the high praise. When we decided to change our lives we asked ourselves what we wanted to do, really. The answer we came up with was to add to the happiness in the world. You are telling us we are succeeding. Oh joy!!!! So happy you came to stay with us. wishing you aloha, much aloha. boatloads of aloha. We hope our paths will cross again, and in the meantime, many happy journeys to you.

My husband and I recently took a short vacation to the Big Island (5 days/4 nights), spending the first two above Waipio Valley and the following two at the Treehouse. As much as I was sad to leave the ocean, arriving at the Treehouse was one of the most incredible experiences, especially just to see my husband's face when we climbed up the stairs and he saw the outdoor grill, cedar hot tub, and then of course the trap door to the bedroom! I literally had to drag him away to get him to go hiking with me at the National Park (which of course was also INCREDIBLE--definitely check out the Pu'u crater from the Jaggar Museum at night--between the sunset and the fiery red glow, the view was heart-stopping!). Staying only minutes from the park entrance was also a huge bonus, as we beat the crowds and tour busses to the major sights in the park (even in the rain, there were still mobs of tourists on the weekend!), and we were able to hike nearly all of the trails we were interested in and then get back late afternoon to relax a bit before dinner. (Word of advice; purchase food BEFORE coming; the options at the General Store were extremely limited unless you enjoy eating junk food) and without cell phone service, we weren't able to make reservations at the Lodge. We instead waited nearly 30 minutes to be so much as acknowledged and have our name taken for the waiting list at Kiawe Kitchen--well-prepared food and nice wine list, yet overpriced and HORRIBLE service.) Upon getting back to the Treehouse at night, we LOVED the outdoor shower and especially the hottub outside! Even in the cold and rain, both were a perfect way to end the evening (followed by drinking tea and watching Volcano movies inside before heading up the ladder to the amazingly comfortable bed upstairs! :) Bottom line is that while we've stayed in some pretty incredible places during our travels, the Treehouse remains at the top of our list! I was so sad to leave I cried when we had to exit the Moongate on our last morning in Hawaii. Can't WAIT to come back!

Owner response: Oh, what a sweet review of your wonderful experience. So happy you stayed with us. As for Keawe Kitchen, it is a mixed bag. I had hoped they had gotten staffed up enough to improve their service, but it seems their troubles continue. I also enjoy the food there, but it can be a long night when you are waiting with a grumbling stomach... I will take a clue from you and offer future guests to text me and I will make their reservations if cell phone service is lacking. Please do return. any time!! thank you for taking the time to write this review. aloha, Gail

The little tree house was very cool - so quiet and relaxing there, I'm surprised I managed to leave. It was a great place to unwind and soak in the hot tub with my girl and some drinks. I'm really tall, so I always notice dust up high, but lower surfaces and the floors were clean. The trap door hole to the room is 2' by 2', and my 6'10" and 350lbs got up the sturdy ladder and through the trap door just fine. The bed linens and towels were clean & good-smelling. The kitchen was small but has just about everything you need. The inclusion of clean drinking water was thoughtful. The outdoor shower was fun, but because of my height the privacy bamboo wasn't quite enough for privacy - good thing there are only a couple other properties in sight! The Trader Joe's toiletries were different, but did the job with no off-putting scents. Don't let the compost toilet freak you out - my flusher @ home smells worse! Just follow the directions in the guide and you'll be fine. From here, we took a lava boat tour, being lucky to escape the rain AND see some great flow. We went to the one @ sunrise, totally worth waking up early for. We also checked out some of the parks along the coast and saw some green turtles on our way to Kona. Kona is rather crowded and touristy, but if you like coffee and have a few bucks to spend, might as well do it there. Since we were there during the rainy season, it rained much of the time, but we're from Seattle and it was in the 70s so it wasn't bad. We took about half a day to just drive around the entire island, and that was nice, though there would have been more landscape to see without the cloud cover. We didn't bother with the restaurants near the tree house, as we preferred to cook and chill @ the tree house. Other than Bubba Gump in Kona, we mostly cooked. It was great. This tree house is not what a traditionalist would be pleased with. But if you're open-minded and looking to actually get "away" on your get-away, call Gail and have yourself a different little adventure. Prepare to speak quieter, look and listen closer, move slower, enjoy the present and smile more.

Owner response: Aloha and thanks for taking the time to write a review. Thanks especially for including the information on your height and general size ~ it helps other large travelers know what to expect and what your experience was with that unusual trap door. You may not have had our greatest weather, but you lucked out with the lava flow. The surface flow is recent, and it may have reached the sea just about the same time you arrived on the island. It is very dramatic now, and should continue to be for the near future. A word about the privacy in the outdoor shower - although you can see a couple of other houses, it is the roofs you are looking at. No one can actually see into the shower. Even tall people are obscured due to the angle of looking up from below, and the forest adds another measure of privacy. You can see out but they cannot see up and over.... aloha!

The beauty of this property is impossible to capture in pictures. The craftsmanship is excellent and the natural beauty around it makes this a thrilling, but peaceful getaway. My wife and I stayed here as the last stop on our honeymoon a few weeks ago and we'll never forget it.

My husband and I spent the first three nights of our honeymoon in the treehouse and it was PERFECT! Very cozy and hospitable, and great to spend some time secluded after all the wedding festivities. The hot tub was wonderful, and the sound of the intermittent rain on the roof was so comforting and enjoyable to listen to that we spent most of our stay inside reading books and relaxing. Overall a fabulous and unique experience. We highly recommend it. Thank you!!

Hubby and I stayed in the treehouse for two nights in January 2011. Private, funky and fun. Even the off grid amenities were cool. Outdoor shower is private and beautiful. and, who woulda thunk a composting toilet wouldn't smell...AT ALL!! Rain on the rooftop, abundance of birds and relaxing with a glass of wine in the hot tub...wonderful! Thanks Gail and Robert!

We loved staying in the treehouse. It was cozy, romantic and fun. The cedar hot tub was amazing as was the outdoor shower -- two honeymoon highlights. The surrounding forest was so lush and beautiful. The bed was super comfortable too. Only a few minutes from the park. We wish we had stayed longer.

Owner response: Mahalo for giving us a review. Happy you enjoyed it so much. Thank you for mentioning the bed being super comfortable - it's important to us when we stay somewhere that the bed feel extra good, so we try to provide that for our guests too. There are times when guests can only stay a day or two, either because of their schedules or our bookings at the time of their visit, and that's OK. We have tried to adjust our pricing to encourage longer stays, not only because the treehouse is enjoyable, but the park and this side of the island are like no other place on the planet. aloha!

The hosts included a few edible treats and personal service daily. Great location for touring the national park. The facility is not for the physically challenged- so go now while you are young! We would recommend this property to everyone we meet!

Owner response: Mahalo Laura. We are delighted you enjoyed staying at the treehouse, and especially pleased you felt it was "something out of storybook". A lot of fantasy has gone into the design. We think of it as a playhouse for grownups. It is probably only a tiny bit more challenging an entry than a second story walk up, but it feels so different since it is up in the trees. Hope to see you again! Enjoy your travels!

We only stayed in the rental for two nights but found both the property and the owner wonderful! Charming, clean and in a fantastic location, our only complaint would have to be that we couldn't stay longer. A must if you are looking for somewhere different to stay during your travels. We are planning another trip in June 2011 and will definately be checking to see if the property is available!

About the owner: We are Robert and Gail, runaways from the mainland. We built this treehouse with expert help. The finishes are our part. We envisioned this as a honeymoon cottage, and it is a part of our rainforest wedding offering. We also have a pavilion in a separate location for intimate ceremonies. If you are interested in that, please let us know. Aloha!

                                  Why the Owner Chose Volcano:
We chose this place for the romance, for the unusual aspect of being on top of the volcano. It is a thrilling place to visit.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Here in the rainforest, you feel you are inhabiting a scene from Jurassic Park, or a wing of the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. In the treehouse, you step into a fantasy. For most people, it is their own fantasy they enter. One of the highlights is soaking in the cedar hot tub. During the day, birds fly by even at eye level, as you are so far off the ground. At night, you are under a canopy of stars winking through the leaves of the trees, or kissed by gentle night mists.
