Hana house description
You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA’s most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches—there are six of them, all quite different—are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawai’i is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here’s why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks.
Kolea, timber-built in 2003, is located a mile from Hana airport on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of our fruit farm. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai.
Kolea’s principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. Soft linen and towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has plenty of storage and a separate pantry, oven, microwave, blender, and ice-making fridge, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai. Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32” flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, internet and wi-fi. Any special requirements—give us a call and we will do our best.
We will on request provide snorkeling gear and beach towels, and we can guide you on the eating possibilities, hiking and many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away.
Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the fall.

Hot Times at the Hana House
Hot Times at the Hana House
The lush vegetation around the Hana House is breath taking, at least for those of us who grew up in the desert. Beautiful red Ti plants circle the house as a natural privacy barrier. We stayed two nights in October. The days were warm as the trade winds were not cooperating, we asked the Cottage owner, Andrew, for a fan. He not only brought us a fan but some cooking oil as well,.. and some fresh picked avocados and bananas. Andrew encouraged us to wonder about the property and we did. On a walk we ran into him and his friendly dog which resulted in a tour of the various exotic fruit trees on his property. He was in the process of planting a crop of Palms to harvest heart of palms, we wish him success. The house is very comfortable (with a fan), although it rained all night the second night and no fan was needed. I slept great on the queen bed. The house was clean and doesn’t show the wear and tear as you might think a rental would. I saw a previous review where someone complained about some dead bugs in the house. Yes there are bugs, the house is in a tropical rain forest and you should expect bugs. Having said that, the door and window screens were in perfect condition to keep most bugs out. As you visit around Hana you will see bugs and spiders everywhere and the locals just put up with them. I highly recommend this property, and that you plan to stay in Hana instead of trying to drive around that end of the island all in one day. There are too many sights to see to just buzz by them. I have rated the property as good only because I think the house should have ceiling fans in the bedrooms for rare hot nights, and because there was no out door grille. The kitchen however is fully stocked and ready for cooking. I really believe that this house is probably one of the better private rental properties in Hana.

Very nice cottage
Very nice cottage
Secluded location, calm, but only within 10 minute drive to a beach. Very well maintained and clean property. We haven't seen any bugs or cockroaches. Some ants may come if you leave sugar opened, but if you keep food covered there is nothing to worry about. There were some mosquitos outside in the evening, but, just a few. I am a mosquito magnet but I barely saw them after a small sprinkle of deep wood. These are all (so negligible) negatives that I can list. Overall it was an excellent and hassle-free stay. I can recommend this location to anybody. If you look up my facebook account, I have some recent pictures from Hana and areas to the south. These places are must see, especially red sand beach, and I'm so glad I stayed there. The view from cottage is beautiful, nice to rest after "surviving" road to Hana. The owners care about guests. It was pleasing to find little bananas waiting for us, very tasty, but I guess it might be seasonal. Thanks, owners.

Our family (3 adults and an almost 1 year old) drove the lovely road to Hana looking forward to the quieter more lush part of Maui. We arrived during what was probably a heat wave and were immediately attacked by mosquitoes. Note that there is only 1 fan in the cottage, so if its hot, its really hot. The disappointing part was that the place looked only minimally clean. There were bug bodies everywhere, some of the dishes had bugs in them etc. I've lived in the tropics so I can understand that bugs are inevitable, and we enjoyed seeing the geckos, but I would not let my infant crawl on the floor as I am sure that it had not been mopped. I could literally tell where raid was sprayed because of the pool of dead insect bodies. Some of the bed linens smelled of mildew and the shower also left something to be desired. The location is amazing, and the cottage could really be wonderful, if perhaps the owners hired a professional for the cleaning.

Owner response: We have sent an apology to this guest for failing in the high degree of cleanliness we aim at. We have changed our housekeeper and the home has been thoroughly spring-cleaned this week. We have every intention of maintaining excellent standards in this respect, and thereby earning once more the almost universally high satisfaction ratings we have enjoyed in the past. We are happy only if our guests are happy.
Not worth the money
Not worth the money
After driving the road to Hana, my 2 friends and I were hoping to find a calm, peaceful place to stay for the night. The house was fairly well located, surrounded by nice trees, and it was indeed calm. Unfortunately these are the only positive points we could comment on. Obviously the house is located in a more tropical/wet area of Maui, so it is normal to expect bugs.. but not inside per se, especially for the price. Within 20 minutes of my arrival I had found a cockroach on the kitchen counter, 2 geckos in the bathroom and bedroom, and several ants, spiders and dead mosquitoes in the corners of the rooms. It seems as if things were only superficially cleaned (towels and linen change) but that's all. The coffee machine was almost rusty. When I tried to use the dryer, it was full of clothes already, which I had to discard myself. The TV remote barely worked. I wish I only had positive comments here, but unfortunately, for that price, It was not worth it. I do not recommend it.

Owner response: We apologize to this guest for failing in the high degree of cleanliness we aim at. We have changed our housekeeper and the home has been thoroughly spring-cleaned and will be maintained to the highest possible standard. However, this guest may not be aware that, in a tropical rainforest, standards to be expected in a five star city hotel are not possible. Spiders and other bugs are endemic and it is impossible to exclude them entirely from any home even if entirely screened in like ours. Gecchos are always around. Any travelers allergic to bugs should think carefully before coming to our area at all. We have nevertheless enjoyed hundreds of thoroughly complimentary comments in the past and have every intention of continuing to earn them. We are happy only if our guests are happy.

This part of the island is a must see! It is so lush with vegetation and has a very laid back character. The two grocery stores alone are an adventure! Best banana bread around and great fruit stands. The cottage has a beautiful, open design and wonderful skylight that keeps it brightly lit. It was nice and clean and ready for our early arrival. The location is very easy to find and quite private with a distant view of the ocean. The grounds are landscaped with much color. We were lucky to observe the tropical storm Flossie from the front porch! The owners kept us informed about the current weather status and encouraged us to arrive before the storm was to hit. We had a quiet drive to Hana with little traffic due to the upcoming storm. We're very glad we didn't cancel our trip. The owners graciously gifted us with a nice variety of local fruit and a lovely tour of their farm. The furnishings were fairly comfortable and the kitchen had just enough supplies for cooking. This is a gem of a space for a get-away from it all! The owner was very conscientious regarding our comfort and safety in the storm. Thank you!

We loved our "jungle house" in Hana! Clean, spacious, and a fun house for our two little ones aged 4 and 2. It was very well situated for our two days spent exploring Hana and vicinity, and the owner was great with giving tips and advice. We loved being able to pick our own papayas from the gorgeous garden as well. It was without a doubt, a memorable stay, and we would definitely recommend Kolea Cottage as a fabulous, unique place to stay in Hana.

Quiet Retreat to Nature
Quiet Retreat to Nature
This is true Hawaii! Lush flowering surroundings with no building in sight and the ocean on the horizon. Birds strutting the front yard and calling; feels like heaven: spacious living area, dining and kitchen in the round, spotless home, great front porch and comfortable beds. Andrew and Robin were very hospitable, forthcoming with advice, and generous. Filled fruit bowl from their banana The location was great for exploring Hana and the Seven Sacred Pools area. Beautiful black sand beaches: we like Koki Beach best where we saw Frigate and White Tropic Birds. Toby's Beach Food Stand had great food. I would like to return and I would recommend the property to everyone.

Beat the crowds
Beat the crowds
It was great being able to avoid the tour bus loads of people by hitting the sites in the early morning and late afternoon. There is so much to do in the area that one day isn't enough so staying a couple nights is well worth it. Also having Andrew show you around the farm is very enjoyable. Hope to be back sometime in the future.

Comfy and quiet - with a view!
Comfy and quiet - with a view!
After spending a rainy day hiking and exploring along the road to Hana, this house was a perfect haven! The main area (kitchen and living area) was inviting - open and airy, and well furnished. The bathroom and bedrooms were very clean (and I am usually picky about kitchen/bathroom cleanliness). Having breakfast out on the front porch was a special treat! The owners were very responsive and informative. We felt as though we were very secluded. Wish we were able to spend more than one night in this lovely home!

Truly Heavenly In Hana
Truly Heavenly In Hana
My husband and I found this piece of paradise on the internet and loved it. We are kama'aina and love to go to Hana to relax and chill out. This time we came to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary and had the best time ever. Kolea is perfect...well appointed like it says and very clean and comfortable. Truly a home away from home...only better. The location is great - just about a 6 minute drive into town. We originally made our reservation for three nights and loved our time here in Hana so much we extended another night. A hui hou, Kolea Cottage!
