Fantastic property - once we got there
Fantastic property - once we got there
Our experience at this property was really great, but we nearly cancelled out trip a week in advance due to such poor communication. We booked this trip several months before our stay. Calls and emails to the property manager went largely unreturned. There was confusion as to what day we could arrive, questions about the accommodations, etc. Finally about two weeks before our vacation, we got an information packet on the island. It basically told us to drive to either Portland or to Falmouth, find a place to park and call a water taxi. If we had any further questions, we needed to call Doug the caretaker. I tried to call Doug, only to find out that the phone number had been incorrectly listed on the sheet. I called the water taxi company to see what those costs would be, and was told that it would be $90 for six of us one way to the island. As there were 12 in our group, that would have been $360 round trip! We finally got ahold of Doug, and things improved dramatically. He met us at the town landing in Falmouth, and took us over to the island with all of our gear in a couple of trips. He graciously showed us around and gave us the tips and tricks of the island (e.g. turning on the generator on a really cloudy day, flipping the circuit breaker if we ran out of water, etc.). We had full use of the boat during our stay, so never needed the water taxi (thank goodness). The property itself was very well maintained, and just as described. We all stayed there very comfortably. We had lobsters delivered to our dock daily, and found huge pails of mussels each day for dinner. The highlight of the nature was a baby seal sleeping on a rock, right next to our dock. The kids petted it! The water tower only had one floor that you could sleep on (the top one), as condensation from the tank had dripped on the lower bed, causing it to mold. It was a healthy climb to get to the top of the water tower, but the views were beautiful once there. The kitchen in the main cottage was fine for our group, and there was a nice charcoal and a gas grill outside. There was also a stand alone burner for the lobster pot outside. We enjoyed a fire every night, and the stars were spectacular. While we didn't need to pitch tents, there were several very nice areas to do so. All in all we're really glad we went. I just wish the communication on the front end would have been better. Doug was great!

Eight adults and four kids (7 and under) stayed here and had the best time!! It was a magical property full of places to explore. We caught crabs, went picnicking in the boat, had lobsters delivered to the dock, swam off the rocks, kayaked, hiked around the island, had a treasure hunt, played bocce and volleyball. It was so private, but so easy to get to, and very close to Portland (though we only went once to restock our groceries). The house and all it's auxiliary structures were charming, clean, and very well-done. The outlook over the bay was incredible! We loved it all! And the owner and caretaker are so nice and accommodating. Thanks!!!!!

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: This property was purchased 5 years ago. It was a dream come true for myself who has been a Mainer my whole life. It has views from all around and private beaches. You can hear the waves lapping, see sailboats sailing by, collect sea glass and enjoy the perfectness of a classic Maine cottage. Some of my favorite moments of my life have been at the property. I had a baby, and purchased another oceanfront cottage, so have decided to rent this one out for some of the summer. It is a dream for anyone interested in the old school quietness of our past, but has the amenities to make it comfy and is close to the mainland for anything you need.
Why the Owner Chose Sturdivant Island:
Because Casco Bay in Maine is close to the Portland airport, is close to 5 star restaurants, is on the outskirts of a beautiful harbor, and very close to my home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine so it was easy to get to!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The uniqueness is the privacy and quietness. There are no roads on the island, so it will just be you and your group there. The only way to get to the island is by water taxi or private boat. It is so special to be 'away from society' easily, but it is close enough to jump right back in if wanted. It is run by solar power (with back up generator) and the toilet is run by rainwater collecting in old whisky barrels. (you cannot tell - it is a regular modern bathroom!) There is an outdoor and indoor shower. The outdoor is a must. There is a lobster cooker for outside so lobster bakes are easy (or you can easily hire someone to come do it for you) All amenities needed or wanted are available.
