Villefranche is unique as a village on the French Riviera in that it has not been over-run by apartment development and commercial tourism. Remarkably, it is still an authentic French and Nicoise fishing village of 7,000 residents. Although it is in the heart of the Riviera, with Monaco on one side and Nice on the other, it is still a little village where the same families have lived for centuries and people know each other - it is a little enclave. The site of what is now Villefranche, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has been settled since prehistoric times. Celto-ligurian tribes roamed the area and established farming communities on the surrounding hills. The Greeks and later the Romans used the natural harbour as a stop-over en route to the Greek settlements around the Western Mediterranean. It is a strategically important area where the Alps join the Mediterranean separating France from southern Europe. Located on the exclusive Cote d'Azur, Villefranche-sur-Mer is ideally located 10 minutes east of Nice, 10 minutes from Monaco / Monte-Carlo and 30 minutes from Nice-Cote d'Azur Airport. It is served by the Nice / Menton bus and the Cote d’Azur rail line. It enjoys a wonderful sandy, south-facing beach and is noted for the number and quality of its restaurants. Villefranche Bay is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling and other water sports. There are many scenic walks for all levels of walkers. Popular day trips include Monaco for its Casino and Grand Prix, Nice for the Old Town, Promenade des Anglais, shopping and art galleries, Cannes for the glitz, Paul de Vence for art, Ventimiglia for its market, and the old hill top village of Eze. Centrally located, the apartment is 5 minutes from shops including bakeries, supermarkets, greengrocers, pharmacies, ATM, restaurants, bus-stop, car park and 10 minutes to the beach, train station or l'Institute de Francais The coastal walk around Cap Ferrat is a must as is a visit to Villa Rothchild and Gardens. The hill walks take you into the foothills of the Alp Maratime affording magnificent views of the coast line from Menton to Cannes. For families there is a very popular water and theme park in Antibes. White water rafting is available in the Roya and Var Valleys. Nice, Monaco and Cannes host many musical festivals including the Nice Jazz Festival in July, ballet, opera and classical concerts during the winter months and of course Nice Carnival in February. Golf available at La Turbie, 10 miles by car....morecollapse

I have stayed in Eclat de Couleur before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Coming in mid March we so enjoyed some sun. We sometimes had breakfast on the balcony and a picnic on the beach. This time three of us had the specific aim of visiting art museums in the area. The South of France is considered the most important centre for art after Paris. So many museums are easily accessible from Villefranche. Transport is excellent and inexpensive. While staying for a week we managed to visit the MUsee Matisse at Cimiez, a short bus ride from Nice (no.17), the Musee Picasso in Antibes (38 mins. by train from Villefranche) and Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence ( 55 mins. on bus 400 ). Sadly, we missed the Chapelle Matisse in nearby Vence which is closed on Friday and Sunday. In Villefranche itself one has the Chapelle Jean Cocteau and the Volti sculptures in the fortress. There are so many more one can visit: Museum of Modern Art, Nice Musee National de Chagall, Nice Musee Bonnard, Le Canet Musee de Beau Art, Nice Musee Jean Cocteau, Menton

we stayed a week in this lovely apartment along with another couple. The apartment is a generous size with two bedrooms/two baths and is well equipped, spotlessly clean and well maintained with quality furnishings and appliances. The view from the large deck is not to be missed with large sliding doors that open fully to allow an uninterrupted view from the lounge and kitchen inside as well as from the deck. It is a lovely spot to sip an afternoon glass of wine after being out and about during the day. This is an exceptional vacation home, convenient to the main road for transit, shopping and exploring, yet is a short walk down to the waterfront for numerous restaurants and the ambiance of Villefranche.

Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Owner response: These guests have highlighted the outstanding features of this apartment and we're delighted they found it to be "spotlessly clean and well maintained". Eamon & Eileen

We spent two wonderful weeks in Villefranche at Belle Epoque. This year we did something different by taking the bus (Nice's gare routiere, Nice, or Nice airport) for 1 euro to Isola 2000 for two days of skiing. It's a 2 l/2 hour bus ride (you could also bus to Auron which is 2 hours). We rented skis and boots right at the hotel (Hotel du Soleil Le Chastillon via booking.com) and skied out the door to 360 degrees of ski slopes. This is the Alpes Maritimes, so the skiing is equivalent to some of the slopes in Colorado at 8-9000 ft. There was not a cloud in the sky both days, and the skiing was varied, with mid-slope huts offering sun deck chairs and lodges for respite and imbibing. We enjoyed it so much, we are thinking of bringing our grandchildren next time. The trip only increased our love for the south of France!

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Owner response: A day's skiing in Isola 2000 or Auron travelling on the special Ski Bus from Nice is fun and easy to do. Eamon & Eileen

This property is perfect. First of all, the master bedroom is roomy and has a great onsuite. The other bedroom is also great with two double beds. Both bathrooms were perfect. I love to cook and this place will not let you down. All appliances are new and work great. There is a BBQ which I used almost every night. Although we ate out for lunch, I enjoyed shopping at the local market and at the local butcher shop. The butcher is a great guy and is only a short walk down the street. The views from the deck is breathtaking. You can also open the patio doors and you have a huge balcony!!! Our family had a wonderfull time in Villefranche Sur Mer and would return again. The people there are very friendly and ready to help. This brings me to the people who take care of this place. They are also wonderfull and helpful. Again nothing bad to say. Only positives!! It is worth mentionning that this is not our first time renting an appartment and so my review is based on past experiences. This appartment has been renovated perfectly with absolutelly nothing missing. As a Canadian, I did not want for anything. The coffee maker was just like home so we were able to have a pot over the deck each morning. The croissant however were not like home, they were wonderfulll! I could go on and on, however, if anyone has any questions, you are welcome to contact me at; pchevalier11@sympatico.ca

We were absolutely delighted with our stay here. The apartment is wonderful--even better than it appears in the pictures. It was spacious, spotless and had all the amenities you could possibly need. The terrace has spectacular views day and night and is a lovely spot to sit and relax after a day of sightseeing. Villefranche is a beautiful village and is perfectly situated to visit all the cities along the coast quickly and easily by train. But the best part is returning to your own little "home" at the end of the day. I would highly recommend this apartment.

We find ourselves missing the apartment that felt like home for a month. It worked so well for us, as a senior couple, to arrive Nice Airport, get picked up and taken to the apartment where Sue the manager awaited; a great seamless start. Everything was ready as advertised and expected; but nothing quite prepared us for the beautiful balcony view. Throughout the month we appreciated having easy access to buses and the train; the Cote d'Azur's bus system for shorter destinations being reliable, clean, and a great bargain. Frequent, easy visits into Nice came as an unexpected vacation bonus.. fine museums, shopping, restaurants, and the standout Nice Symphony at the Opera House (another time for its jazz venues). But Villefranche as trip base couldn't be improved on, especially having the space of a two bedroom, two bath apartment with a fully applianced kitchen. The owners' intention to provide a good experience was noticeable everywhere in details like tour books, reading material, attractive kitchenware, quality linens, and enough of everything for entertaining inside or out. We found an overall concern to anticipate needs from both owner and manager. As far as we're concerned they succeeded and we've already recommended the apartment to friends. We can chaulk up the cold winter of 2012 as time well spent in Villefranche.

Our family spent 5 glorious nights in this apartment in mid-June 2011. Weather was fantastic, views from the terrace were sunsplashed and beautiful. The apartment was very comfortable and nicely appointed. Short walk to great boulangeries and cafes. No need for a car (probably a liability on the winding switchback roads), the bus system works very well and is inexpensive. Enjoyed the delicious moules and canard at a cafe across from Eglise St. Pierre, and the salades nicoise at the beach cafe was tasty. The short trip to the Villa on Cap Ferrat is defintely worth a visit--beautiful chateau and gardens. And don't worry about the creme brulees and profiteroles adding any girth to your waistline--the walk up and down the steps to the beach and cafes will help to keep you in shape! Sue, the property manager was very helpful in getting us oriented and set up. The bottle of rose in fridge waiting for us was a very nice touch. Jean-Frederique, the driver, was very friendly and helped us work on our french. We can't wait to return to VSM and Eclat de Couleur!

Owner response: We are delighted that this US family enjoyed Villefranche and our apartment 'Eclat de Couleur'. We like their description of the ''sunsplashed'' terrace and that they found the location excellent, being close to bakeries and shops and the excellent public bus routes. Eamon & Eileen

We enjoyed every moment in this excellently located and well equipped appartment in Villefranche sur Mer, and had a lovely time, with lazy beach days and day trips to Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo. The pebble beach has crystal clear water. It was very pleasant and convenient to stay here, comfortable and perfect location for us, as we could walk everywhere. Buses and trains just minutes away, and not stress with parking and rush hour along the roads. Bakery and groceries just minutes away. The terrace is a nice place to spend the evenings (and sunny days as well), as we stayed in with our two small children every night. The view over the bay is very beautiful, day and night. The locals were friendly and the food was great, we especially enjoyed the “Fishermans daughter” and Locoloco. The consierge is very capable and friendly, she is great! We hope to come back at another occation. All the best, Ingveig and Svein, Norway

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: Eileen and I live in Ireland, north of Dublin. As we are in our mid sixties, with our family grown-up and semi retired we lead a less stressful life and enjoy hill walking and travel. We visit Villefranche three to four times a year thanks to Ryan Air!!! We have always loved holidaying in France, having taken many 'gite' holidays with the children. We love their food, their life style, the brightness / light of the South of France and particularly the friendliness of the Nicoise.

                  Why the Owner Chose Villefranche-sur-Mer:
In 2005 we were fortunate in buying 'Eclat de Couleur'. We chose this apartment because of its wonderful Sea View Terrace and its location being close to restaurants, shops and bus stops in the Old Town of Villefranche on the Cote d'Azur. It is bright and airy. The terrace is a wonderful sun trap with the enchanting colours of the Bay, the Terracotta of the Old Town roofs against the pine forests of the Cap Ferrat. It has an excellent location being a five minute walk to the shops, restaurants and bus stop and ten minutes to the sandy beach. A bus every fifteen minutes to Nice or Monaco at 1€ per trip gives you excellent opportunities for day trips.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The central location of this apartment allows us to holiday without a car, choosing instead public transport for day trips along the coast or inland exploring the valleys of Maritime Provence. Buses are cheap, clean and frequent. The apartment is a great base for day-trips. Popular trips are Monaco, Nice for shopping, art galleries, Promenade des Anglais, the Old Town and Flower Market. Further afield there is St Paul de Vence for art, Cannes and its Croisette, Ventimiglia (Italy) for its market A walk to Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild for its villa, formal gardens and fountains, not forgetting a coffee and a choice of the best gateaux on the Cote d'Azur is always worthwhile. Being avid hill walkers we love to head off on the bus up to the hills behind Nice, La Turbie or Menton. On Summer evenings another favourite is to grab the swimming gear, pick up a bottle of wine and a pizza and head for the beach and enjoy the setting sun over Mont Albion and the waves lapping the sea shore. During the Winter season we have enjoyed classical concerts and an opera from the varied programs in Nice, Monaco and Cannes.
