This is a beautiful, peaceful place- rooms filled with light and art, bay and garden views and wonderful private outdoor spaces. This custom home built for current owner is high enough in the Hills for fantastic views but close enough to walk to Berkeley's cherished destinations.
After you arrive at this exclusive neighborhood of fine homes, you will enter your private world through an elegant gate and pass into a secluded outdoor room furnished for outdoor sitting, dining and sunning by a large garden fountain and pool.
The house beyond the courtyard welcomes you with a high-ceilinged, skylite entry art gallery that leads to an expansive 40 ft. living room and dining room opening to a view of San Francisco and the Bay and a large, flower-filled deck. The deck is furnished for dining, lounging, reading and relaxing with a reading light for warm evenings.
The beautifully furnished book-lined living room has a completely restored 1907 Steinway Grand, a hifi system, classical and jazz CD collections and cable TV.
In addition to the formal dining room, there is a breakfast/garden room with an enormous skylight ceiling, and 2 outdoor dining areas- a deck off the living room and the large courtyard.
The kitchen has large granite work surfaces and a center island. There is a gas stove top, 2 electric ovens, all appliances and a pass through to the living room The laundry is located conveniently off the kitchen.
The 2 bedrooms, each with bath, have queen beds and bay windows with chaise lounges that invite reclining, reading and enjoying the courtyard garden view.
The master bath is flooded with natural light from a large clerestory and has a tub and separate tiled shower and corian counters.
There is a library/office off the living room with a view of the bay and a large work space with high speed internet access, wireless printer, scanner and fax.
You may be too happy to venture out, but when you do you can stroll down the adjacent lane to the original Peet's, Chez Panisse and the Gourmet Ghetto or walk 8 short blocks to enter the North Gate of the Berkeley Campus of the University of California.
This rental includes a weekly housekeeper and a bi-weekly gardener.

My husband and I enjoyed every moment of our 7 days in this light, airy, welcoming home! Communication with the homeowner was always a pleasure, and she was so welcoming... right down to the chilled bottle of wine waiting for us in the fridge. We took advantage of the nearby walking trails, and if you can handle the hills, you will be amazed at the beautiful sights (and even a waterfall!). Shattuck Avenue is just down the hill, where we enjoyed coffee at Peets, creative pizza at the Cheeseboard, and an elegant dinner downstairs at Chez Pannise (but be sure to make your reservation well in advance). The home and outdoor living are well maintained and the views from the balcony amazing. I would stay again and highly recommended it to all!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

We spent 8 days here while preparing for oiur daughter's wedding. It is a gorgeous home with beautiful views and landscaping. Restaurants, shopping, and groceries are very conventient yet the house is situated in a lovely neighborhood. I would recommend it to anyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

For a beautiful, relaxing home away from home in a great location, this well-appointed, superbly cared for residence can not be beat. It was perfect for our two couples with features such as ensuite bedrooms with ultra comfortable beds, lovely linens and even lush robes. The house has a modern, well-equipped (granite counters etc) kitchen, elegantly furnished, yet comfortable. spacious dining and living room and decks with wonderful Bay water views. The nighttime view of San Francisco is magical. The couple with us nicknamed this home “The Palace”. Add to this a most gracious host/owner and you have a truly magnificent rental.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

About the owner: My husband and I planned and built this house for ourselves as a grown-up house after our children were grown. It was one of the few remaining view lots in North Berkeley. The house was designed to be both our full time residence and our vacation house and has fulfilled those roles beyond my expectations. I still feel happy very day when I wake up and go to see the view across the bay. Now that I am retired, I enjoy traveling and doing things with my children and grandchildren and want to share my wonderful house with others who will appreciate it when I am away. Berkeley is a unique city- an old suburb of San Francisco, the home of the most prestigious public university in the world and a center for arts and culture. Cal Performances, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Aurora Theatre, The Marsh, Shotgun Players are among the many groups producing live performances.
The food here is amazing whether you eat out in our fabulous restaurants to buy gourmet ingredients from farmer's markets, our fishmongers, bakeries and shops like Berkeley Bowl.
I live here because I enjoy urban life and want to be close to the university.
