We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The owners were very friendly and helpful, with phone calls and emails to make sure everything was set up as we needed it, and giving us suggestions on things to do in the area. The house is tastefully furnished and clean, with high-end appliances and a well-stocked kitchen. The highlight of the property is the meadow out back. Our toddler loved running around in the grass, and we had a lovely time sitting outside at night. The location is remote enough that you feel you're getting away from it all, but an excellent grocery store is only 2 miles away, and all the pleasures of Santa Cruz are only 20 minutes away. Would definitely come back here.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Yes this is a wonderful area year around. We are hoping that you and others will come to know the greatness of this area in the winter time as well. Ferns, greenery, and mild winters offer great opportunities to enjoy the coast year around. Winter is also an economical time to get to know this wonderful area.

Property was just as described, we found it clean and well presented. I would recommend this property for a nice relaxing break, the sky at night was a sight to remember. We had our dog with us and all worked well. I think the best part was the location, it was short trips to the small local towns, Ben Lomand, Boulder creek, Scotts valley, Felton and Santa Cruz. We had a great coffee in Felton, shop called the pourhouse.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children.
Owner response: The comment about the wonderful Pour House in Felton caught me off guard until I realized that was the on line slogan for White Raven Coffee and Tea House. You are right, they are a great place for a respite. During the days of construction they let us borrow a large thermos for the construction crew coffee. There are a surprising number of great places to eat in Ben Lomond and Felton, such as the Tyrolean Inn Restaurant, the Felton Guild, and Rocky's. We love helping our guests find them.

Santa Cruz was a meeting place for our family. We all met from at this lovely home. First thing I noticed was how clean the home was and the oak tree and the beautiful meadow! It really met all our needs. There were 6 of us, and although each of us didn't have our own room it worked out perfectly. We also found it nice to explore to nearby santa cruz and beaches and then come home and make a nice supper and we noticed the new BBQ and had a great time making dinners and relaxing for the evening. Even better was the firepit area in the back. Since there were two teenagers, this was a real hit to have smores for dessert! Love the big meadow, and was just such a homey comfortable feel to the home, with no problems at all. I did notice on my side of the house the rooster decided to have a daily wake up at 4 am, but soon fell back asleep. If you like the hubbub and busyness from a city this may not be the place for you, but if you like to be in nature and relax this is just the perfect place. Glad to have found this for our get together. Got to know the welcoming neighbor lab as well, who came for her daily visits! The smell of the steak probably encouraged her as well. One morning my brother and I went on a hike to a nearby lake that was just lovely and a nice workout too! I have no problems recommending this home for a fun yet relaxing vacation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: In addition to the San Lorenzo River that runs down the mountain and through Henry Cowell State Park there are two other bodies of water nearby. The protected turtle pond at the Quail Hollow Ranch Nature Preserve and Loch Lomond. Both Parks offer family activities such as the upcoming program at Quail Hollow to learn about California history, life science, and visual arts using hands-on, fun-filled, educational activities. Each two-week program runs Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Exciting field trips are planned for each week to sites such as the Peralta Adobe in San Jose and the Elkhorn Slough. Guest speakers, a culminating overnight, and visits to portions of the park that are normally closed to the public round out the activities.

On a recent trip to CA with my wife and two young boys (4 and 6) we had to change some plans fairly late in the game and needed to find something in the Santa Cruz area for three weeknights. This property would probably be out of our budget in high season, but the owners had a reasonable, mid-week low season offer posted. We jumped at the chance and were very happy with the choice. Huge yard for the kids to romp, well stocked and spacious kitchen, warm "off the grid" feel of Santa Cruz mountains while still having all the various creature comforts. The owner was very responsive to a minor problem with one of the fireplaces (maintenance fellow had it fixed first thing the next morning) and the place was very much as advertised. I have little doubt that for many people this property could warrant an excellent. Depends a bit on what you are looking for. We would have preferred something a smidge closer to Santa Cruz, and I suspect that the chance to lounge about outside around the fire-pit on warm summer evenings, star-gazing, would enhance the experience. The stylings of some of the items in the home as well as the layout were perhaps not to our exact taste, and the ceramic sink that first needed to be partially filled with water before, for example, pouring boiling pasta water down the drain was a mild inconvenience. If we had to stay in the Santa Cruz area with my kids in the future we would probably first look into other properties and chase our own sense of "excellent". That being said, I would not have a moment's qualm about staying here again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to review our property. Among the wonderful ways to spend time in the hills above the tourist areas are the hidden entertainment venues found within 2 miles of the Ben Lomond Bungalow. The Trout Farm Inn Pool Club offers dancing to live music on Tues. and Thurs. and Karaoke on Fridays. The place I miss most is a modest Mexican Restaurant called Don Quixotes. To nights entertainment is quite common for the type of venue found there: Fri. April 5 at 8pm $15 adv./$15 door dance ages 21 + It's A Beautiful Day along with Santana are considered to be "2nd wave" bands that emerged from the San Francisco bay area in the late sixties. Moreover, like Santana, IABD headlined at the Fillmore West prior to recording an album. Their debut 1968 LP the self titled "It's A Beautiful Day" was laced with classic cuts such as "White Bird", "Bombay Calling", "Wasted Union Blues" and "Time Is" The single off the LP "White Bird" quickly became part of the FM play lists and is considered a classic of rock. If you go two miles further up the hill to the Loch Lomond Reservoir you can find an inexpensive canoe, kayak, or fishing boat. The lake is stocked with trout, bass, and blue gill. Redwood Parks are nearby as well as 4 historic logging villages of Ben Lomond, Felton, and Boulder Creek; and the longest zip line found on the central coast at the Mt Hermon Conference Center. The Roaring Camp Rail Road offers a ride from the Redwood Trees to the Santa Cruz Beach Board Walk in the summer. And We have room to park your boat, your car, and your RV.

We visit the area often and are absolutely thrilled to have found this quiet and comfy home. We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed visiting our new granddaughter in San Jose and also spending time with friends in Aptos. We found the location to be in perfect proximity to both areas. Just a very short drive to Santa Cruz, yet far enough removed from the beach crowds. The house is very clean and comfortable inside and out. The old oak tree is breathtaking, and the huge meadow is soooo quiet and relaxing. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Lolly, while we were there, and she was very kind and gracious...just a wonderful person! I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a special place to stay in the magical Santa Cruz mountains. Thank you, Lolly, for providing such a place. We are looking forward to many more happy returns!Owner response: We agree that the Ben Lomond Bungalow is the perfect proximity to permit easy access to San Jose as well as the beaches but also to Palo Alto, Mt. View, Sunnyvale, Santa Cruz, as well as day trips to Monterey, Carmel and San Francisco. I love that we can enjoy the beauty of the meadow and mountains and have quick access to so much around us without sitting in the traffic found in so many other areas. I am looking forward to using the new grill and see what is new in the garden later this month. It is only because of the great guests we have been able to find to share our Mountain Home that we are able to do this. I love that this is working so well. Thank you for choosing us and promising to come back. We look forward to your next visit.

We found a beautiful trail through the redwoods only three miles from the house. (Thanks for providing bikes, Lolly.) And we drove down the back road through the forest to the beach, The best part was coming back to the house. It's right at the heart of everything we love about California . . . without the crowds! This country home was very clean, and comfortable, with interesting décor. We enjoyed the outdoor patio and gardens immensely. We loved watching the deer in the meadow; and, it was refreshing to see bright stars in the sky at night. We will definitely return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Virgil and Lorraine, thank you for taking the time to share some of your special moments at the Ben Lomond Bungalow. Maybe next time you will have a chance to discover the wonderful talent that books into the Don Quixote's InternationalMusic Hall in Felton. We have seen musicians like Steve Miller, Moby Grape, Dobbie Brothers, and Butch Hancock.

We spent 6 nights in this lovely home. We were visiting our daughter & son-in-law & realized after we got there, it's a little further from Santa Cruz then what we thought but it is a very peaceful place, surrounded by beautiful grounds. We enjoyed the chickens & goats at the next-door neighbors and frequently saw deer as we walked/drove the neighborhood. The home was furnished with plenty of dishes, towels, etc and the beds were very comfortable. The owners were readily available to answer questions & seemed committed to making our stay as pleasant as possible.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay. To clarify distances, Ben Lomond Bungalow is exactly 10 miles to the heart of Santa Cruz. Along the bay there are a number of beautiful beaches and communities. I believe your family was located in Aptos which is 10 miles south of Santa Cruz. In all Santa Cruz County has 29 miles of beaches to explore. Cowell's Beach, Steamer Lane, (Surf), Twin Beach, and Castle Beach, are all near the wharf and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk located on Main Beach (great for kids) . Driving south you will find Manresa Beach, La Selva, Capitola Beach, Seacliff Beach (cement ship), Seascape Beach, Sunset Beach (romance) and many more. Driving North of the Santa Cruz Harbor, you will discover Light House Field State Beach (surf and dogs), Natural Bridges (monarch butterflies), Wilder Ranch Beach (historic site), Davenport Beach (tiny town), 4-mile Beach (parties), Scotts Creek Beach, (beach comb) Wadell Creek Beach, (wind-surf) Bonny Doon Beach and Red-white-blue (suit optional). We hope you come back soon to discover how many beaches you can find to leave your foot prints in the sand.

This was a delightful property. It's quiet and you feel as though you are alone in a lovely forest. The kitchen has all the essentials. We had a party for friends and there was plenty of wonderfully decorated dishes, mugs and cups. I stayed in the guest room and the bed was very comfy. I love the decor in the dining room! The owners are archaeologists and it feels like you are examining their latest findings. We went to Don Quixote's Music Hall in Felton, a nearby town. The Mexican food was good, but the real treat was seeing Moonalice, a band made up of musicians from the Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Alice we agree the Ben Lomond Bungalow is a special place to rekindle energies with both friends and family. It works as a peaceful base from which the central coast may be easily explored. As an opportunity of discussion since our occupation was mentioned, we have no artifacts in our home, just pictures and interesting objects from various local markets. Ben Lomond, Felton, and Santa Cruz all have great consignment shops to explore, as well as unique shops and even a true flea market.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1978
About the owner: For more than a century our family enjoyed the central coast region. Our family album is seen in our linked youtube slide show. Let us help you find the hidden paths around Santa Cruz and the San Lorenzo Valley.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Cruz:
We chose this property nearly 35 years ago, partly because of the open flat sunny meadow surrounded by forests with distant mountain views and partly because the geology is as varied in each direction as the potential activities nearby. The Oak Tree on this property speaks for it self, it is AMAZING, as are the birds who come to rest.
Once in the house you may not want to leave this mountain paradise, but the redwood forests, beaches, San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose and Sunnyvale are all with in reach. We are free from traffic, noise, and grime. The fully refurbished pool club is a mile away, a little further is a great small lake where you can rent small fishing craft, or canoes.
Now you have the chance to enjoy our hard work at very modest prices. Great neighbors, hikes, access to every thing on the central coast. Transforming Rental Property to Vacation Rental was the solution to enjoy the property ourselves; and we could share the experience of country living with folks that might not other wise have the opportunity.
Mt. Hermon offers a fantastic and rare zip line opportunity as you move from platform to platform through the tree top canopy. This is the place that defines California living at its best, and where ideas blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces emerged.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The rich and varied history of the region is so much fun to learn it does not seem 'educational. Recognized as one of the most significant biological treasures in the state of California, the Zyante Sandhills Zone support a unique community of plants and animals found only in Santa Cruz County.
Quail Hollow Ranch, is an equstrian park first developed by the founders of Sunset Magazine. The trails around the ranch will lead you past a pond, year round streams and a host of wildlife. We are close to many state parks and the redwood trees. If you cannot leave work, there are satellite conference rooms and office space available within five miles.
